My dd is 9 months old. Can anyone recommend a beginner BASIC baby-sign book? I'm thinking of trying it. :)
My dd is now 13 months old and signing like crazy!!! I bought the Baby Signing Times and some of the Signing Times series and cannot say enough about them!! She signs the following with intelligence: "more", "all done", "hat", "baby", "cracker", "milk" and more...we tried a few other books and dvds but the Signing Time series is THE ONLY effective and still entertaining method we've found. Warning: it won't work if the parents don't take an active role in reinforcing the signs and the songs will stick in your head! It is just so nice that myy dd doesn't have to whine when she needs something..she can "tell" me, even before she can speak!
It is American Sign Language, too, so we are teaching her another language!
Hi! I LOVED baby signing with my LO. It was so useful for us and he loved being able to communicate.
I didn't use a book, we watched a video. It was "My Baby Can Talk" and we bought it at Babies R Us. It shows the object then a woman doing the sign. We watched it with him and did the signs with the woman so that he could see us do them (and we learned them too).
I highly recommend it!

I took a baby signing class with my son when he was little. It was really fun and helpful. I took it at the Cranberry Recreation Center, but I am sure they have similar classes offered near you. My son signed a lot before he learned how to talk (nurse, eat, more, all-done) and it made communicating much easier. The key is to learn the signs yourself and do them whenever you are talking to your baby. They pick up pretty quickly. It doesn't matter if they do them correctly as long as you understand what they are doing. Don't worry about correcting it.

The Signing Time video series are incredible! You can check them out from most libraries, or buy them online. Videos are easier than a book since you can see someone make the sign as they tell you what they are doing. We own all of the Signing Time DVD's and my daughter, at age 2, knows well over 150 signs. We started around 6 months with "more" and "milk" and just kept going from there.
We did baby signs with my daughter and it was amazing. We really only did about 5-6 signs. Yes, no, milk, more potty, change(diaper). I borrowed a book from the library that came with a video. I don't even know if they were the correct signs but they worked for us in communicating. It was so awesome. We started at 6 mos and she signed by 9 mos. By her 15 mos appointment the ped was really impressed with her language, she had 25-50 words in regular use and over 100 for her 18 mo appointment. Shes now 2 and speaks incredibly.
I will be buying baby sign language books for all the baby showers I attend from now on.

Check your library or the bookstore--I'm sure there are tons! Also, research it on he internet--you may not even have to buy a book!
PBS Sprout has a sign language word every evening on The Good Night Show and they show and demonstrate them ALL on the website.
At 9 mos, I'd start with "more", "hungry" "sleepy", etc.
