I'm planning a baby shower for a friend, any recommendations on centerpieces that are reasonable or that I can make myself? Any advice would be helpful.
www.orientaltrading.com has all sorts of 'baby shower' things and other items in order to make the center pieces and other goodies. Just do a search on the site for "baby shower" and lots will turn up.
They often have bulk prices, and all kinds of cute things for all sorts of parties and supplies.
Many Teachers use this site as well.

Instead of something that would be thrown away, I'd use storybooks, stuffed animals or blocks for centerpieces. Prop a teddy bear up with an open book in his lap, or stand books open and scatter blocks or other small toys in front of them. Or go with a different age theme for each table - the newborn table (bottles, pacifiers, parenting books), toddler table (board books, balls, cereal) on up to the teenage table (car keys, phone, makeup, fast food bags). Mostly, have fun and don't stress! :)
We had a baby shower for a friend last year and some of got together and pitched in for one of those diaper cakes. Lots of people make them, but I'm not that crafty so we bought one from a local gal.. they are online and on ebay all the time. It was a big hit and of course it came in handy!

My Aunt made diaper cakes for my shower. She used ribbon to tie the diapers together to make three teir cakes. Essentially, took diapers and positioned with the fold toward the center built up a circle and bent the edges of the diapers around while tying with a ribbon. She also added some travel size baby items as embelishments. You should be able to find better directions online if you look around! Best part was, I got the diapers after the party!!!
Hi D., I have the perfect idea for the centerpieces, if you are looking for one centerpiece on the main table, you get a small baby buggy, the old fashion kind, any store where they sale party goods for showers should have one, fill it with, rattles, bottle nipples, baby brush & comb small items like that, put ribbons on it to decorate it if it's not already decorated, what's cool about this is after the shower she can give it to the mommy to be. If you are looking for individual centerpieces for multi tables, do thr same thing with little booties, put a little rattle, baby thrermamater, baby tooth brush, little small stuff. Hope this helps. I did the cutest thing for my daughter and people are still talking about it! It was precious! In the invitations, send a cut out of a baby bottle. (We used bigger invitations just so we could do this, because the bottles were approx 7" x 3 1/2"). We used pastel card stock. With each invitation and cut out bottle we had a slip of paper asking that each person bring the bottle to the shower with some baby advice on it for the new mother. They were asked to write their name on one side and advice or well wishes on the other. Some came back with simple "Best Wishes on your new baby" kind of sentiments, others came back with teary lovey dovey wishes,("You will be the best mother because you are so kind and sweet.....") some came back with really great advice ("You can never hold your baby too much", "Housework can wait", Huggies diapers are better for breastfed babies due to blow outs", etc...). And other came back with really funny stories and advice("Never ever let Uncle Mike and Aunt Tracey take your baby to Disneyland" with a picture attached with our nephew crying his eyes out on a recent trip to Disneyland). <Inside story but got a huge laugh!> Some people decorated their cutouts on the front, where they wrote their name. The creativity was more than we had hoped for!
Anyway, when people arrive at the shower have a designated person take the cutouts, quickly add a wooden stick (we used skewers, pointed end down) and add a ribbon. We attached the ribbon and stick with hot glue. It was quick and easy. Then one by one you stick the cutouts into a vase that you have ready (with a foam block in it to layer the heights). It was beautiful, practical and we had the mother to be read them at the end of the shower which was so much fun!!!!!
P.S. We also sent the cutouts to out of town friends and family members who couldnt be at the shower and they were so grateful to be included in this way! They were asked to mail them back a few days before the shower. That way, we actually had the centerpiece partially done and on the table as guests were arriving! The others were added as guests arrived and we all watched teh centerpiece grow with anticipation. It was so talked about and turned out so cute!
