I always give customized hooded towels from www.lilhoodlums.com. The lady who does them can use any themed material you want and put it on any color towel. They are super cute! My three kids use the ones they got when they were born (they're 5, 3 & 2) and they are still in great shape. It's also a local company, so it doesn't take long to get them.

* a gift card to a very nice baby shop

* offer to go in on a larger item/ stroller or playpen

* buy a custom embroderied diaper bag with the baby's name to match what her room will be done in

* make a blanket- if you crochet or knit or even sew.. these are always special... and things I always kept from when my sons were babies.

* perhaps a gift certificate for a spa day or massage for mom or a gift basket for her as well as the baby.

* a diaper service for a month? or maid service.

I saw it mentioned, but wanted to put a vote in for Miracle Blanket. My now five year old daughter was 22 inches and almost 10 lbs at birth, and very strong. She was able to easily get out of her receiving blanket.

If you know the babies name - you could get something embroidered (hooded towel, blanket, burp clothes, etc.). There are a lot of embroidery places around dallas (and in the burbs) and there have even been several posts on mamasource for people looking for embroidery services (you can do a search for that post). A lot of mom-owned websites also provide personalized baby gifts so you could search etsy.com or just the web. I always like to give hooded towels w/ the baby's name on the back. One of my fav. gifts from my second baby was a gorgeous super soft blanket with his full name and birth date embroidered on the corner. We still use it today and he's 2. It's well worn - but the quality is holding up brilliantly and I know it will go in his "treasure box" for a keepsake.

i loved the monogrammed diaper covers a friend of mine gave my daughter. she wore them tons with dresses and they were really cute. they made cute, yet functional keepsakes.

If you really want to get her something special, get her a newborn photo session with a local photographer. those pictures will be treasured forever. also we got a savings bond from a friend in our daughter's name for college. that was also nice. a friend made me a cute baby blanket/quilt that meant a lot too. if thats too much, honestly the best gift I got for my shower was a huge box of diapers or a diaper service (that lasted 1-2 months) and a huge box of wipes (both bought from sam's club). That helped us out soo much and we appreciated every bit of it.

I'm not sure how much you want to spend, but my brother gave me a Sears Portrait Studio package and it was a GREAT gift. I was able to take my little one up and have pics made - truly a great gift.

When my 2 brothers and my best friends had babies, I put together a basket. It was field with all the little stuff that most people don't buy, but you will need.
Infant Tylenol, Infant Motrin, Mylacon Drops, travel Shampoo, travel baby wash, travel baby powder, travel wipes, bottles, bibs, diapers with decorations for burp cloths, picture frame, Q-tips, bottle brush, infant nail clipers, plug covers, cabinet locks, nursing pads for mom. This basket can go on and on and be as expensive as you want it to be or inexpensive. I hope this helps. It seems like a lot of nothing, but it is really a lot of everything. Especially the first time your child has reflux and you are not going to the store at 1am to find it on the shelf or when they are cutting their first tooth and you already have the Tylenol.

The most valuable gift that I received when I was pregnant with my first baby was the Happiest Baby on the Block DVD, which I always combine with the most amazingly useful item that I discovered when my babies were newborns, which is the MIRACLE BLANKET---very aptly named, since it really works miracles for crying babies (look on Amazon).

Yes, the MB is pricey for a swaddler, which is why you may only want to add one, vs. two, to the DVD as a gift. But they are sooooo superior to the Kiddopotamus "SwaddleMe" wrap, which my baby was always able to bust out of (and whose velcro would stick to my nursing tops and pill them).

Anyway, these two things go together perfectly and were so INVALUABLE to me, as a set, that I give the DVD, plus either one or two Miracle Blankets, as a gift to all of my pregnant friends.

The price is $55 including shipping. We love this gift; it looks great in their room. It's visually stimulating -- when they get older, you can use it to teach them (What color is the ice cream cone? Show me the letter C, etc.). And best of all, they will always remember the details of their birth!

One good idea is a gift basket of items that the baby will need such as Mylicon (for gas), infant Tylenol, nasal bulb syringe, infant decongestant, etc.
These are the kinds of things that you don't want to send your husband out for in the middle of the night and are good to have on hand. They tend to be costly, so it's nice to receive them as a gift rather than having to buy on your own.

How about a diaper cake! I used to have a business making diaper cakes and sold lots of them, it was always the mom's favorite gift!

If you want to make one yourself to make it even more meaningful, you can find instructions online. You can do just diapers with ribbon and a cute topper, or you can really fill it up with lots of baby necessities like nail clippers, shampoos, lotions, baby powder, brush, comb, bib, mittens, socks, etc.

It makes a great practical gift because the mom will use everything on it (that is, if she has the heart to take it apart), but it's also a wonderfully creative way to present all those goodies!

A tip, I always use size 2 diapers so that the Mom can leave it up in the nursery for a while before having to take it apart!

Swaddling blankets. These blankets work really well for swaddling - not too thick or warm. They are very flexible and large enough to wrap a baby and since babies move a lot, these blankets stay wrapped sround the baby.

Have you heard of a diaper gram? I received one with my daughter and it was very special. Not to mention, you can never have enough diapers. They will have the name of your friend's child printed on the backside. Very cute! It comes in a huge basket and is delivered to her front door.
I'm sure you can google people who do them in the area.

I am going to give you advice as an expectant mother. What she will appreciate most is something from her registry. I am also having a girl and at my recent baby shower I received SO many outfits, clothing and blankets. I appreciate all of these gifts but had to take several of these back in order to get some of the things we really need- like the breast pump, bottles, first aid kit, etc.

It's difficult to chose what to take back because everything is so stinking cute and you don't want to hurt anyone's feelings by taking back what they gave you. However, there are so many things she will need that have nothing to do with clothes.

One of my good friends gave us our diaper bag and filled it with little, inexpensive things from our registry and then a few things that were tried and true for her with her son. It was one of the best gifts we received.

You don't have to spend a lot of money either to get something that is so useful either. If she is breastfeeding- a box of storage bags, breast pads and lanolin is a great gift. A small box of bottles, bottle brush and dishwasher basket is great too.

Just something to think about.

Has she registered? Did you want someone to make her a baby quilt to coordinate with her nursery theme? My daughter does this and has made 3 beautiful baby quilts for friends or family. You can see them on her FaceBook. Let me know if you are interested.
How about cloth diapers for burp towels that you decorate with trip or embroidery with the name on them. They are useful for 1-3 years and you need several.
Also a name plaque for the wall, etc.

One of the cutest gifts I receive and used all the time was a personalized music cd with my daughters name sung throughout each song. I began playing it for her after her morning nap and then trasitioned it to the car when she was about 4 months. The amazing thing is that when she was fussy in the car I would turn on her music and she would stop crying. To this day she love music and to sing and dance. i'd get her a collection of gift cards. think something for the baby (wherever she's registered or target or babyrus), something for her (something feminine or a clothing store for post baby clothes), and something food related (think delivery or a restaurant close to her where she/hubby can order via telephone and pick up quickly on the days she can't cook much).

As an expectant mom with a toddler I will tell you - buy off the registry. If you want to get a cute toy or something on the side, fine. But don't be creative. People really need all the stuff they spent hours putting on the registry. THat is what a good friend would do.
