Hi!! I am going home to NY for my sister in law's baby shower (husbands brothers wife), It is costing for my daughter and I to fly there about $300. So I really don't have much more money to get her a gift she registered for. I am hoping to spend between $30-$50, I need to know what gifts you loved that you didn't register for. What do you guys think, you have never let down before!!
Thanks!!! :-)

What can I do next?

Many mom's get overwhelmed with baby shower gifts that they can only use "at the beginning". I would suggest a gift that the baby can grow into. I recommend the "Floppy Seat". After baby is too big for the portable car seat, you don't want them sitting in a dirty grocery cart and touching or worse mouthing all over it. The Floppy Seat covers the seat the baby sits on and anything they can possibly touch. It goes into any type of "cart", high chair etc. and is machine washable. I used my everywhere and I loved it. The Floppy Set also folds into itself becoming a bag when not in use. http://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=321446...

I really like the idea of a small basket of must have items. Since you already have a child you know what you couldnt live without, this will really be used and come in handy.

What I loved is what came in handy and I hadn't thought to buy yet...baby tylenol, mylicon (baby gas drops...best ever), vibrating teether (my dd loved it and wore out the batteries), teething gel, gum scrubber and cleaner (it also helps lessen the pain from teething), extra clippers, brush, comb, different pacifiers if they are going to use them (one might not work, but another brand might), fuzzy blankets are always good, a good monitor with several listeners (I keep one in the bedroom and one in the livingroom), etc.
Here is one of my own thoughts...a blank journal. I started one with my dd. I hand wrote in it starting with a letter to her and then began it with how we found out about her arrival. I think it will be something for her to cherish long after I am gone.
Hope this helps.

Not sure how much time you have before the trip but I once embellished store bought cloth diapers with ribbons, bows, embroidery, buttons, etc... The friend I gave them to said that they were the most memorable and heartfelt gift she received. To this day she still has them (it has been 4 years). It cost about $20 for two packs of colored cloth diapers and some misc. pieces of scrap (mismatched buttons, ribbon, letters...). Even if you are a novice seamstress you can still attach a couple of buttons/bows by hand and use iron-ons for the rest.

Hope this helps. :-)

Addition: One thing that seems to fall by the wayside and is super cheap but super useful is one of those water temperature floaties for baths.

A scrapbook with the pages already decorated. All you have to do is insert the pictures.

I usually get all my pregnant girlfriends a " new mommy survival kit" it includes things that I got or found that were a life saver. The one I just sent out included things like tissues for those emotional days, fuzzy socks for the hospital, some foo foo smelling lotion, nipple cream for breast feeding, a couple binkies , the " mommy hook" , teething tablets , a small toy, a swaddleing blanket. A bunch of little stuff all in a basket that can be used for baby laundry or storing that living room diaper station. Everyone I've given them too LOVE it. I end up spending a little over 50$ including shipping. I look for like the basket on clearance and I got the swaddler on clearance as well , for the last one. Get creative and think about all that little stuff you'd wished you'd known about when you first had a newborn.
Good luck

I received some muslin swaddle blankets as a baby gift many years ago. I used them for EVERYTHING - spit up blanket, swaddle blanket, sun cover, breast feeding cover, etc. They are so breathable, that it is not worrisome to put them over the baby's head, yet they are very warm when the baby is wrapped in them. Both of my kids still have their muslin blankets and still love them all these years later. And, I give them as shower gifts now with a list of their uses, b/c I LOVE them that much!

Boppy!! It's a little known essential, especially if she's gonna breastfeed.

Most first time mom's don't know to put swaddle blankets on their registry. I always buy those -receiving blankets just aren't big enough!
Since it will soon be winter in NY, you could get some of those fleece sleep and plays. Actually, any sleep and plays are good- esp the ones that zip up the front (snapping buttons in the middle of the night can be tricky!).
Also, I like to buy hooded bath towel and washcloths sets (you can ever get too many of those), and then throw in some expensive ultra-sensitive bath wash- like California Baby (you can get at Target).

I love these wonderful Angel Dear pillows and napping blankets that are so soft, cuddly, and animal themed. I get mine from American Gift Factory ( a website) and everyone loves them! My mom's friend got one for my first child and It has become his ultimate comfort item. Pillows are about $15 and the blankets about $30. Shipping costs are low too, so you would come about about $50.

My daughters 6 & 12 bought a bunch of onesies (6 @ macys for about $15) & pastel sharpies then decorated them for my friend's shower - they had string & little clothes pins & made a clothes line - they were adorable & she loved them - we also bought her a gift card to babys r us but it wasn't real expensive & they had a fun time doing it.

I loved my Moby wrap (about $40) and also our swaddling blankets. We got the kind that have velcro on them and make it very easy to do. I also really loved those water proof sheets for changing diapers. Another idea might be a gift certificate for a pedicure or a massage or something just for her.

I know this sounds, little... The best shower gift I got was some expensive diaper rash ointment that worked (big old tube of Balmex) It was artfully arranged in a basket all by itself. Since you have a larger budget you could add a sweet children's book, or board book...Peter Rabbit. Goodnight Moon. A Very Hungry Caterpillar. Pat the Bunny...classics!

If she's going to breastfeed, a Boppy would be great! They cost $30. I just had a baby last month and that is the one thing I can't do without (besides car seat). :-)

Yeah I know, I'm a guy, but I have been in on buyig many shower gifts with my wife. My wife has been invited to several baby showers and when we got the register list for one shower that had several super expensive items on the list (all of the few listed inexpensive items already purchased) we decided for the first time to go off the list. We ended up putting together a bunch of essentials (baby shampoo, lotion, rash cream, baby powder, silicon pacifiers, etc...the things people actually need that they never think to put on a baby shower register) in a basket. After the shower, my wife got more complements on the gift that it has become our standard baby shower gift to give.

What about a gorgeous picture frame with a gift certificate to have the baby's first pictures done. At places like Sears/JC Penny, you can purchase the gift card for about $50 and then if she opts to spend more, she can with her own money. Plus, its something that will fit in your luggage.

Someone did this for me for my first born and, of course I went WAAAAY over what the gift card covered, but I knew that I would going in. But it was nice to have the money from the gift card knocked off the total AND it was a great way to remind me to make sure to get that first professional picture taken!

Whether she breast feeds or not, the Boppy and a cover to go with it is the gift I always buy when attending a baby shower. I solely bottle fed and adored my Boppy---so comfy to prop the baby on while you feed and keep them close. My husband used it too when feeding our daughter. It is especially nice with mom's who end up with a C (I did not) because their scar may be sore and this gives a little cushion for the baby to lay on!
