Have you tasted breastmilk, and then tasted formula? They are very different. If you are just trying to get him to take a bottle, then pump. If you are trying to get him to take a bottle AND switch to formula, you may need to do the gradual approach and start with breastmilk and slowly add formula to it.

A lot of studies have shown that a breasfeeding mother can have a very difficult time feeding her baby a bottle because the baby associates you with breastmilk. I had some friends who absolutely could not bottle feed their own babies for months b/c of this. If you have help, maybe you could get someone else to start feeding him the bottle (you'd probably even have to be out of the room), if you don't have help, then I would talk to your doctor about what to do, but Barbara had a good suggestion. You might want to try and pump extra and offer him a bottle after you nurse (maybe don't nurse him until he's full) and see if he'll take it then? I am not really sure, but I am sure that this is frustrating for you! Hang in there!

Maybe you should pump some breast milk and give it to him in a bottle to get used to the bottle. Then gradually add small amounts of formula with the breast milk, adding a little bit more to the bottle each week, until he gets used to it. This worked for my kids. Good luck.

My son didn't take formula either. I ended up breasfeeding him until he was over a year old. I added solid food when he was around 6 months old. He didn't eat much, didn't seem to like anything. He preferred food from our table (i.e pasta). He only liked one brand of Cereal (a cereal made by Nestle) and he hated all the baby food that came in a glass jar.

I would continue breastfeeding if you can and maybe pump the milk if you cannot be with him all the time. I would also still try different things and maybe eventually you'll end up with something he likes. My doctor's office always had free samples or coupons for free samples, which made it easier to try different brands, but I'm not sure if they have that here too.

In my experience, 2 kids one boy one girl, if babies are started on breast milk, it is hard to switch them to a bottle, much less formula. Neither of my kids liked to take a bottle, but when they were hungry enough they would but I pumped my breast milk and didn't try formula. Just my preference. So, it has nothing to do with the gender of your baby. He may just not like it.

if he likes breastmilk, pump that and don't bother with formula.

After nursing, my kids didn't want anything to do with formula. It tastes horrible. They get used to that sweet delicious breastmilk! When we tried to give my 9 month old formula she spit it out all over us! that was the end of that!

He doesn't need formula. It tastes quite yucky once you are used to breastmilk. He doesn't need any extra food yet. Wait until he is 6 months, then you can try some cereal (mixed with breastmilk) or some simple fruits or vegetables (which you could also put a little breastmilk in so that there is a taste he knows in there). Babies don't need any additional nutrition other than breastmilk until close to their first birthday, any eating they do before that should really be more just to learn how to eat, not a significant amount of their nutrition. Don't worry about it, you are doing great.

Its not because he is a boy...babies love nursing and being close to their Mamas. It what we are made to do!

I'll echo others that, if you can, continue to breastfeed and/or pump and offer expressed breastmilk. Only your breastmilk can change in its composition of carbohydrates, fats and proteins to meet your child's continuing developmental and nutritional needs. Formula cannot and will not ever be able to do that; so, if you are able, continue to offer what is best - your milk. Also, 5 mos is pretty late in the game to try to introduce a bottle to an exclusively breastfed baby. My now 11 mos old refused the bottle for 3 solid weeks after I returned to work (where I pumped milk for him), even though we had introduced the bottle to him at 3 weeks old and gave it to him occasionally before I returned to work when he was 6 mos old. If you can, have another person offer the bottle. If he can smell your milk, he for sure won't take it from you. My son eventually took the Playtex nurser. Look at your nipple and the nipple on the bottle. Try to find one that is closest to what your baby is familiar with. And also try silicone and, oh, I can't remember the other material nipples are made out of, but, check the packaging and make sure you offer the alternative if you haven't already. Your baby may prefer one over the other.

well i guess we need to know why you are trying to give the formula uinstead of breast milk . breast milk is flavorful, formula is bland. very bland (taste it!) skip rice cereal no one needs cereal and go straight to table foods. but again we need to know why you would want to take your baby off of breast milk so soon?

I should clarify, start table foods after 6 months . before then the GI tract allows large proteins to go straight through without filtering (this is how your antibodies get into baby, and exactly why immunities wane as they get older and the "filter" develops) this may be why kids fed foods too early can develop allergies and there is no filter yet.

Hi S., No comparison breastmilk vs. bottle 2 completely different things, & I'm not sure who put into your head a boy or girl prefers nursing more than the other... but that is silly thinking... Please get that out of your head...Nursing our babies is the best nutrition created it is the way God intended life to go on. ALL female mammals were created to nurse their young their milk..
If you can still nurse him, please do so for him. Solids before 6 months is not the best way to go as someone else stated. Their little bodies can't handle it. Try your very best to stay with nursing for a few more weeks.

Why did you stop breastfeeding? It is very hard to have the child change to fake milk. If you want more freedom, pump yourself and freeze the milk to give to him. Alot of babies won't take that fake milk, breastfeeding is the most natural thing to do, do what is right for the baby not society. You will learn that there is fewer problems with allergies, colic and bowels when you breastfeed. You have to think what is right for the baby.
