Hi ladies,My 7 month old was born with lots of hair.  She has already had 3-4 haircuts.  The problem is that her hair gets really snarled in the back when she sleeps or rides in her car seat.  It is really difficulf to comb through.  I don't want to put product in her hair because of her age.  Am I washing her hair too often?  Is it just her hair type? Other solutions?

What can I do next?

There are a lot of products now that are tear free 2 & 1 (shampoo & conditioner) that I use on both of my girls. I also would use a grown up conditioner JUST in that little spot in the back of the head. It REALLY helps.

Hi K.!

My daughter has lots of hair too & I use the detangler from the dollar store & it works great. You can also take conditioner & mix it w/water then spray before you comb it. I found that by doing this once a day it keeps the tangles at bay. Other wise my little one had a rats nest in her hair constantly! Good luck!

The only thing I tried that worked on my daughter's hair before she was one was the L'Oreal kids shampoo plus conditioner that is tear-free, and is very gentle. Also, I have a spray detangler from Johnson & Johnson, very gentle and smells good. My daughter's hair wasn't super thick but it was very long and got tangled in the back like you were saying and this helped so much.

I use biosilk on all my kids. You do not say what type of hair she has, but as a rule you do not need to wash daily. Are you using baby shampoo? This is the worst for drying out hair. Bath and Body makes great children products- my kids love the rootbeer shampoo and conditioner and it leaves their hair soft and silky. You can also try one of the spray/ leave in conditioners. I use a papmered chef sprayer( the one for oil) it turns any liquid into a spray and is better than the pumps that come on the conditioners.

Maybe look for an organic hair conditioner. Jason and Kiss My Face both make great organic conditioners, free of parabens and Laureth Sulfates. My daughter has lots of hair too. I chose to let hers grow. We braid it and do pony tails. You can also use a dab of conditioner as a "leave in". After her hair is rinsed clean of shampoo and conditioner and she's toweled off, rub a dab of conditioner around before it dries. Her hair will probably become less fine and less prone to tangles as she gets older. I've also heard that silk sheets help eliminate hair tangles. How practical that is for a baby, I don't know!?

I have different issues with curly hair but can relate! If it's long enough to put it in ponytail(s) that might help. Any detangling spray could be used on the snarls without adding product. Maybe spray it in before putting her down or in the carseat too? You should be washing her hair only every couple days. I recently bought johnson's new leave in conditioner and love it for softness and shine, and not having to rinse it out keeps everyone happier :)

California Baby makes an all natural detangler that wouldn't hurt her head. You can spray it on while her hair is dry (so when she wakes up from a nap or the night).

.I've tried everything...all baby detangler products and even natural oils, less washing...My new find that works >>>>A satin pillow case!!!!! I bought it at Sally’s Beauty Supply for $8+....I hear they can be expensive at dept store like $30...the one I bought is a standard size and has a zipper so it doesn't slip of because they are slick...that's why they work for hair....I can't believe I hadn't though of it sooner because in the back of my mind I knew that black women use satin hair caps and pillows after getting their hair done….Cotton dries hair out and create friction. My almost 3 year old daughter and I have been fight this hair issue for well over a year and I have even cut it because it became so nappy...I think because she has such fine curly blonde hair that gets frizzy in Florida's humidity just like mine...the pillow case has been amazing!! And just an idea for the car seat, if it has a separate head pillow find a way to cover it with a piece of satin, that's what I'm going to do...I will take the detachable pillow to my seamstress with a piece of satin and have her make a little envelope like case or even add a zipper or buttons so I can remove for washing....I sure hope this helps, it's heartbreaking to have to cut your child’s hair when you are trying to let it grow, but a fresh trim after purchasing you satin products could help the new beginning if beautiful hair.

I had a little bit of trouble with my daughter´s hair as well. I used to put a little bit of baby oil on my hands and with my fingers untangled her hair before combing. I also put a soft thin bandanna on her hair to avoid it from getting tangled again and made her prettier as a plus. Hope it helps you...

Hello, have you tried keeping a hat on while she's in her car seat? Like a bonnet or something? Otherwise, try just putting it in a low ponytail when she sleeps. Hope you find a solution, my almost 2 year old *hates* her hair being brushed!

We have the same issue and I try to just make sure it's smooth before she goes into her car seat or down to sleep. I also am really careful to make sure I don't tangle it when washing her hair. Other than that, you could try infant conditioner. I know California Baby makes one and we like their other products so I would guess it's probably good.

My younger daughter has a TON of hair also. I have never had any problems with it though. I also don't use any sort of soap or shampoo on their hair unless it's really dirty. Rinsing with clear water gets baby hair plenty clean, in my experience.

Best wishes!

Dear Kristim,
You have an interesting problem, I have not heard of before. There are some very nice no tangle products for children that should be safe for her hair.

I suggest getting her a satin pillow case. I might be expensive but well worth it and she will love it. Also get a little satin pillow for the back of her car seat.

I am a hair stylist and I know that most detanglers are an oil base, try some baby oil on her hair. It might help keep the hair from tangling.

Hi K.,

I can tell you how to make product that doesn't have chemicals. If you take food grade glycerin from the health food store and put a couple of drops in a little spray bottle you will get a nice detangler (very similar to Johnson's No Tears) the amount of glycerin that you put in varies with everyone's hair, but it works well on wet or dry hair. Good Luck!

Probably you are washing it too often. You are washing her natural oils and that's why the hair get messy. How dirty she can get at her age? Once a week is enough. Good luck!

Don't worry about "product" causing problems because of her age. Using one of those kids spray detanglers should solve your problem and all it should take is one maybe two sprays to solve the problem. Good luck!

My daughter has super curly hair like me. (long too!) I put a little olive oil mixed with water (just a little bit goes a long way) and spray it on the tangles. Really helps to get them out- totally natural (esp. w/ organic olive oil.) Hope that helps! You could also try regular detangelr if you prefer. Love M.

one thing you can do is get a spray bottle and carry it with you and when you find her hair is snarled just spray it down with water and comb it out. It worked with me and my daughter.
Good luck:)

Hi, K., I don't really know what you are going through...all three of my children were practically bald until they were 3yr old! However, I do sell a great baby skin care product that has a body/hair wash that I dearly love. My son uses the products because of his eczema, they're all natural and Vegan approved. The hair care is great for his hair too, he's the only one that had hair as a baby! If you would like to try it we do have a 45 day money back guarantee. You can take a look at www.J..myarbonne.com Just let me know and best of luck!

I had similar problems plus sensitive (rash-prone) skin... I found great success with CALIFORNIA BABY conditioner (I love the "calming" and "swimmer's defense" products). No SLS or DEAs, very gentle, nice smell...overall great stuff. A dab to rinse in the hair (I didn't usually shampoo her hair but would run a dab of conditioner through it) or you can use a dab of conditioner as leave-in to help. I had no issues with sensitivity, etc. We still use the products and love them. I started taking my daughter to swim lessons at 7 months and that's when I added the "swimmers defense" products to our repetoire on swim days. Hope that helps.

There is an all natural detangling stuff that i use for my little girls. It is safer than the others cause it doesn't have any chemicals in it. I would recommend it to anyone.

Hi K.
My daughter was also born with lots of hair and keeping it detangled is a chore because their little heads rub against that car seat and just tangle the heck out of it. Johnsons make a baby shampoo for curly hair (if your daughter has curl) that has REALLY helped cut down on the tangles even without conditioner. My daughter has used conditioner forever because of tangles, however we can skip that step with this new shampoo. Also they make detangler that helps also. You spray it in her hair and it's made for babies/kids. I have actually found the Wal-Mart brand (for $.99) works better than the Johnsons brand.
I'm excited to read your responses to see what great things other mom's have come up with to help with the tangles!

I know what you mean about those back-of-the head snarls--my daughter's hair at the back just breaks off short (the rest of her hair is long and silky) and then the ends frizz and mat together--like fried-out doll's hair!

Every morning I go through it all with a brush, then a wide (detangler) comb, then a finer comb. (She hates even the slightest tug (19 month) but I do my best--she'll have to get over the rest.) During her weekly hair wash, I let conditioner sit on just that area. Those measures don't prevent all trouble, but help me keep up with it.

But I think I will try the Calif. Baby detangler spray!

My granddaughter was born with lots of curly hair. Even now, at nearly 8, her hair gets tangled on the back of her head if she goes to bed with wet hair but less so if her hair is dry. Her mother used a detangler made by a baby products company. Now she just sprays the hair good with water and the tangles come out much easier.

We also use a wide tooth comb. The teeth are "fat". They seem to slip thru hair easier than a regular comb.

I'm not sure what you do for a 7 month old. But my daughter had that kind of hair and when she got older I always had to braid it before bedtime. The back and forth movement just matted her hair! I kept her hair long until she could care for it herself.

I had the same trouble with my nieces (curly red hair, twins, too cute! but man, the snarls!). Anyway, I read that they should sleep on silk and it will not cause their hair to get tangled...and IT WORKS! I had to make silk crib/toddler sheets for them because I could not find them anywhere. I also fashioned silk pieces to go over the top portion of their front-facing carseats where their heads rest (just hemmed the edges and carefully pinned them to the existing fabric).

I have long curly hair and have found this works for me too (silk pillow case).

Good luck,
T.
