Baby Gate Suggestions

Does anyone have any suggestions on a baby gate for a stair way that does not have a solid wall to mount it to? It would be nice to find an installation kit that is baby safe but will not require drilling into the decorative wood banisters. I have found a couple online made by Kidco but I was hoping to hear some personal recommendations.

We purchased the Kidco Safeway gate in black to match the iron banisters on our stairs. My husband purchased a 1" x 2" board and cut into 2 pieces measuring the height of the gate, spray painted them black then attached them to the bottom iron rungs of the staircase with black zip-ties. You couldn't even see the wood or ties and it worked great.

Call Jack with Infant House. ###-###-#### www.infanthouse.com He can give you a couple of suggestions and a good deal. I believe he used a Kidco at the top and bottom of my stairs and it is great. He created a way to set it up so as not to drill into the banisters. Everyone I know who has called him has been very happy. He will either install the gate or just sell it to you for you to install.

Jennifer,
I see that a couple other moms have suggested you give us a call which I really appreciate - thank you both! This is exactly what we do, so please give my husband, Jack, a call at ###-###-#### to discuss your particular situation. He would be happy to assist and make sure you got the right product, right sizes, etc. for your stairs. We would also be happy to assist with the installation if requested. Our website is www.infanthouse.com.
Thank you and congratulations.

Jennifer,
We have wooden banisters as well and did not want to drill into them so we also purchased a long rectangular piece of wood. We zip tied it to our banister and then screwed into that. We used the Evenflo Top of the Stair Gate and we love it. (http://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2909941) I have used this gate with both of my children (I have a 4 year old daughter and a 23 month old son.) and it has held up great!
Good luck and let me know if you have any questions!
D.

I have a Kidco at the top of my stairs. They make an attachment that is V shaped to fit around the banister. It works OK but not the safest solution. I did not want to drill holes either.
My daughter can climb up the stair with no problem. I have taught her to go down them on her bottom. I figured it is better for her to know how to do it before she decides to try in the middle of the night,

Infanthouse.com is local and they did something very similiar to that for me. They created a post for the hinges and a post for the latch that color matched my banister posts and used some straps to attach them so no permanent attachments were necessary. The gate can also be easily taken off which is really handy if you are doing any entertaining. They were super easy to work with and have done a lot of different baby-proofing problem solving for me.
