Hi mommies, I need some advice about giving prunes to my baby.My 8 month old now has 2 meals a day as per his doctors advice. He did very good when he was just one meal a day - rice cereal/oatmeal alternate days from 6 months old. After I started 2 meals(7 months old) he started backing up.His doc told me to give half the container ( I use gerber) prunes everyday to help him go. I have been doing that and I guess that's why he is pooping these days. Now he eats his cereal only if I mix it with prunes - I think he has just gotten used to that taste. I feel bad cos it looks and tastes SO bad. I wouldn't eat that any day and my poor baby is eating it everyday :( Suddenly today I had this thought - what if he gets so used to prunes that he will need it everyday in order to poop even as he grows? Did you give prunes to your baby daily? if so, when did you stop giving it and baby still pooped regularly? His doc told me to start giving homemade food too - like what I prepare everyday for us.I haven't done that yet because I don't know how he will handle all the spices. My son was born 2 months early and he still doesn't sit without support.I wonder if that's why he is having problems digesting food properly. Not that I question my doctors opinion but I would like to know if most babies do have digestion issues once they start solids? He was totally fine until I started the 2 meals a day routine.Do any other fruits help with digestion other than prunes? Would pear or bananas work too? I hope they do, they taste a LOT better :) I am not giving him any water as I am still nursing him. I have been asked to start with 3 meals a day from 9th month, and I am already worrying how he will handle one more meal. Thanks in advance!

What can I do next?

My thoughts from a developmental perspective is that if he cannot sit without support then he is not ready for table foods. Sitting up without support is one of the cues I was taught to look for when learning about infant/toddler nutrition in school.

Bananas are very constipating and I've just gotta make an observation here: Obviously HE doesn't think they taste bad! Lots of people like prunes. It's working, so it "ain't broke"-- so don't try to fix it! LOL

Peaches, pears and peas are the biggies to get things moving--but may not have as high of an impact as the prunes.

By 8 months, my kids were eating all kinds of wonderful regular food. I was lucky, they didn't have any allergies and their tummies handled everything. I wouldn't have known what to do because they loved food!
The real thing!
They HATED the blandness of baby food.
Prunes really aren't that bad, I don't think. It's a personal preference I guess. They are just dried plums which is one of my favorite fruits of all time.
If your son loves prunes, let him have them. Some kids go on different kicks as far as fruits, melons, etc. As long as he likes it and your pediatrician says it's fine, let him have the prunes regardless of how you think they taste.
Another thing is that my daughter was born full term, but she walked before she could sit up by herself. She had what we called a "round bottom". She had no interest in sitting alone, but she did fine in her high chair. Sometimes I sat her on my lap and let her takes bites of our food.
If you're worried about spices, maybe take a portion of things out before you spice them. For instance, if you make eggs, take some out before you salt and pepper. Or add garlic, etc.
I'm not sure your son necessarily isn't digesting his food. It's just having trouble coming out the other end.
I would try giving him some regular food, keep up with the prunes, and see what happens. Add a thing or two at a time so if he has a reaction of some type, you can narrow it down easily.

I nursed my son for 15 months and he definitely ate 3 meals a day as well.
I'm not an expert, just know what worked with my little ones and it's possible getting a variety of other things that aren't binding might help his tummy some.

Best wishes.

My advice is if your son was doing well with only one solids feed a day then go back to that. It is possible that his system just isn't ready for those extra solids. He was born 2 months year so you have to calculate that his gestational age is actually only 6 months old which is when it is actually suggest to START feeding solids and your doctor is pushing for 3 meals a day! Breast milk is a perfect food and your son doesn't really need anything more than that up to (and even a little past) a year old. Solids are just for fun and learning at this ago. So if they are hurting your son just back off for now. As he ages his gut will be better capable of handling more and more solids. It is not IMO normal at all for a breastfed baby (or any aged person in all honesty) to need prunes every single day to help him poop. Follow your instincts on this mama and follow your babies cues. He'll let you know when he is ready to handle more food. Doctors don't always know everything and will often just hand out cookie cutter advice to every single child of a certain age that comes into their office (and we all know that every child is different). It is up to the parent to take the advice and tailor it to what is best for their child since they are the ones who know their child the best.

Rice cereal and bananas are both constipating. I've heard that you should move away from rice cereal after a while and use a grain cereal instead. My babies liked prunes and they did help them stay regular. So did pears. They are now almost 3 and 6 years old and probably would never touch prunes, but they liked it as babies. I'd stop the rice cereal, and continue with the prunes, but also try pears and other fruits for variety. For table food, start with small and simple things. We gave Cheerios and tiny bits of well-cooked whole grain pasta as first "table foods".

Bananas are constipating. My son always did well with applesauce and sweet potatoes.

You might want to think about giving him some very diluted white grape juice to loosen him up. Apple juice is a little harsh at his age, but white grape is gentler on the tummy.

My daughter started getting really backed up once she was eating food, and our pediatrician told us to give her a few ounces of prune juice everyday. Maybe you can try that and alternate so she can have another food with her cereal.

my daughter LOVED prunes and she had them almost everyday. of course she was regular bc of it, but she had no problems with it. Probably bc they are so sweet is why she loved them. But i didnt see any harm in giving them to her everyday.

First of all you should definately be giving him water - once they start eating "food" they need water too. I'm sure prunes are not habit forming as far as bowel movements go and he will not become dependent on them. If you're concerned about it, just don't give him cereal and give him something else instead. Bananas are constipating if you're worried about him getting backed up so don't do too many of those.
I'd say start giving him water with meals, and just try other foods. I wouldn't worry about the prunes too much, they won't hurt him. And if he'll eat what you're eating, go for it! Your life will be much easier ;-)

Fruits that start with "P" help baby POOP :-) pears, peaches, prunes...
My 8 month old son is constipated one day and the next day pooping up his back - liquid! He eats all different types of baby food. When he was younger he went a long time without pooping so my doctor suggested to give him prune juice - but it causes BAD gas! So we switched to pear juice which worked fine too. Just go about feeding him and be aware of his pooping and alter his diet as needed. He will keep changing and you will go crazy trying to figure him out ;-) And my 3 and 6 year old daughters still eat baby prunes once in a while if they get constipated - they like the taste! Good luck!

He could have some digestion problems. I wouldn't give him prunes everyday (That could possibly cause digestive problems down the road) and see if that will make a difference in his pooping schedule. Introduce other fruits mixed in with his cereal and see if he will eat that. Keep the bananas away until his bowels movements are regular again.

I would get a 2nd opinion from another pedi. I was advised not to give my daughter any 'people' food until she was a year old, because it could be way to harsh on her little tummy.

Other fruits will help too, but NOT bananas or apple sauce. Bananas and apple sauce have the opposite effect, so avoid those.
