Hi fellow mommies!

My 17 month old daughter woke up from her nap this morning and started to cry for me to come get her, since I was just getting out of the shower, I quickly dried off and got dressed. While I was doing this, I heard a loud thump and then she started crying hysterically. I ran to her room and found her on her floor! I cannot believe she is attempting to climb out of her crib already! Thank goodness, she is okay bu I am wondering if any other moms have faced this safety issue and if there are any suggestions on how to keep her from doing this. Should I convert her crib to a toddler bed already? What about those nets I have heard of for cribs that keep babies in the crib? ANy thoughts/suggestions would be greatly appreciated! My oldest who is now 4 never attempted to get out of his crib when he little so this is all new (and terrifying to me!) :)

What can I do next?

I actually know a lot of mum's who their 10mo olds started climbing out, even with the mattress on it's lowest level. Climbers! (And friction on sticky determined little feet)

If I had to guess, I would bet yours won't climb for awhile after that scare...so for the time being...I wouldn't get ahead of myself.

We kept our son in his crib until he was 3, because he WASN'T a climber, and it was hands down the safest place for timeouts.

If you are going to transition, the most important thing is to make sure she can't get out of her room at night...so that means in addition to toddler-safing her room, that it's time to gate the doorway. For true climbers single gates are no hindrance. Up and over they go. So if she's showing signs of needing a rappel rope later in life I'd go for either two gates, one on top of the other, or a large Great Dane style dog gate.

That fall may have scared the climb out of her though, so I'd wait before doing something new unless YOU are ready.

yup I'd say toddler bed but since she is so young just make sure the room is safe for that time inbetween when she wakes up and then you.

My son did that too once... and I know it's 'scary.' My son, on one other occasion (so 2 occasions total), tried to climb out & he did, safely, and was all quite proud of himself... then he opened the door himself and came to me (when I thought he was napping) and he was all smiling at me! I had to stop myself from laughing... and then I just put him back in the crib to nap, told him "no climbing...danger.... stay....go nap....no, only Mommy helps you...." and then he did and never did that again. He NEVER attempted it again.
Maybe your daughter will do the same.

I just verbally told him repeatedly "danger... no...get hurt..." etc. And he understood.

You can try lowering the crib mattress further, and keep the railings raised. Thereby making it harder to climb out.
Or yes, some put them into a toddler bed already... with 'success' being different for each baby and child. It's another 'transition'... so keep that in mind and it can temporarily change their sleep ability and habits. And yea, you'll need railings for any toddler bed as well... they can climb out of that TOO. And roll out/fall out.

The crib canopies do work for some. You can try that too.
Try different things... but not all at the same time.

Or, put something soft around the floor of her crib... like quilts or something. For us, the bedroom is carpeted... so my son did not get hurt. He was just more scared than anything.

Or, you can put her on a floor futon in the room and have her sleep on that. But then, the child can get up and 'roam' around at will....because nothing is keeping them in place.

OR, you can get a kids 'tent' thing and have her sleep in that since it is all enclosed: ... here is an example:

Hi Jennifer...my 14 month old did that this past weekend and his brother did it around 13 months. What I did was go to babies r us and buy a crib tent. Works perfectly!

my daughter fell out about that age too. i put her into a toddler bed and she did well. she transitioned very easilly. maybe try the toddler bed or just having her mattress on the floor. the first week is the hardest because they get up a lot. just be patient. good luck!
