My daughter is 6 months and has a cold..a terrible one. Well, for the past 5 hours each time she coughs, she cries like she is inpain but she had her doc appointment today and the doctor didn't say anything....? Any advice on why she'd cry after coughing and what I can do?

What can I do next?

I have the flu. My throat is so sore that I want to cry after I cough. Could be that her throat is just so sore from coughing.

It scares her. She is six months old and does not have a clue as to what is happening.

Did you ask the doctor about her crying after coughing, or did that show up AFTER you saw the doctor?

Because you're concerned enough to ask us, I urge you to call her doctor and ask the advice nurse.

I agree that she cries either because the coughing scares her. She's only 6 months old and not experienced with coughing. Or that she has a sore throat. You can use a spoon handle to hold down her tongue and a flashlight to look at her throat. If it's red, it's sore. Since she's seen the doctor and he wasn't concerned I suggest that you not worry about this.

There isn't much you can do except console her. I hold babies that are sick as much as I can. They are scared along with not feeling well.

We've been battling a cold/cough/ear infections with my 4 month old for the past 2 months. He had one time cried after he coughed too - like he was in pain. The nurse told me to use 1 tsp of apple juice to soothe the throat, and it must have helped. We only did that 2-3 times a day.

Also, try some steam in the bathroom a couple times a day. That seems to help too. If it continues - get him back in...especially at this age - it can switch to something serious so quickly.

Terrible coughs after a prolonged period of time can cause the throat to feel raw and can cause head pain. That's likely why the poor girl is crying. :-( She's old enough to take infant ibuprofen, so I would give her that over infant acetaminophen. It works better and lasts longer and you can find it without dyes.

Is the doctor certain that what she has is a terrible cold? I would put some pressure on the doctor on this one since bronchitis is going around. What does her cough sound like? Does it sound like a seal barking with a whoop at the end?

Her throat must be raw and sore. Call your pediatrician and ask what you can do for that.

Her throat, chest, head (or all of the above) may be hurting when she coughs. I had the flu a couple of weeks ago and my chest hurt so bad when I would cough that I wanted to cry. It was awful.

I agree with what everyone else has said. Also, you could try making popsicles out of whatever she drinks and letting her suck on one from time to time if it seems her throat is bothering her, just be sure to watch her closely so she doesn't break off a piece and choke. Also, Johnsons makes a "soothing vapor bath" that is menthol scented and makes a great bubble bath that helps clear breathing.

She's hurting, or scared. She's probably got a sore throat and possibly sinus pain and a headache. If the coughing spells are long and vigorous, she may also be feeling pretty desperate by the time she can take another breath.

Did the doc recommend using any fever- or pain-reducer? Otherwise, the best thing to do is to hold her and comfort her as much as you can. Poor baby; poor mommy. I hope she's better soon.
