The Moby wrap was wonderful when my daughter was tiny. We also used a ring sling, which was nice because I could put her in it more quickly. As she grew, we loved carrying her in a mei tai, and still use it sometimes. A lot of Moms seem to love the Ergo, but I've never used one.

I loved moby wrap. I would suggest it becasue not only i loved but my baby too. My girl actually didnt like anything else but moby . i hope that helps

Slings are nice but I found them restrictive. Go with an Ergo! Its completely hands free, can be warn on the hip and back once baby is old enough and so easy. My son is 2 yrs 30 pounds and STILL loves being in the ergo AND there is zero strain on my back and shoulders. Plus you can also nurse in it too. They even have a doll version for older kids so they can carry a baby just like mom

I love the Baby Bjorn! I used it with first daugther (22 months now) and currently using it with my 8 week old daughter...it's a life saver and my husband uses it too!

My baby liked different types of carriers at different times.....when he was really young (1st 3 months) he liked the sling....now (3 - 6 months old) he likes the Moby wrap and so do I....I love it much better than the sling. I can wear him facing out - which he prefers - or facing me for sleeping or if its really cold. We also have the ergo carrier which is more ergonomically correct than the bigorn (sp?) because it puts them in a sitted position rather than all the weight in the spine. He likes that alright and we use it for hiking right now with a blanket under his bottom so he can see out. I suspect that as he gets heavier and taller I'll be using the ergo more and more.

So long story short.....I've used almost every type of carrier for the different stages of my baby...that's just what he wanted and i was able to be flexible and grow with him.

Finally, after 7 carriers(including slings) and on my 3rd baby, I discovered the Moby wrap. OMG...it wsa WAY easier than it looked and my daughter is almost 22 months and I STILL use it when she wants to be carried. It's so versatile (and cheap). AND MY BACK NEVER HURT ONCE!

I wore her 3 days after she was born, shopping at the mall AND breastfedding her while I shopped with 2 hands....and totally covered. NO ONE KNEW! Not to mention, she wasn't hanging out for people to see or touch.

3 months later, I wore her while we hiked to nearly all of the lighthouses along the Oregon coast.

My husband actually wore her. He resisted any of the other carriers and put up with the Bjorn a few times, but hated them. He would ask to wear her with the Moby.

Also, the Ergo Baby carrier or Becco Carriers are great.

If you get the baby bjorn get the one with the back support. It is probably about 25 dollars more than the original one but so worth it. I hear wonderful things about the ergo baby, but again, there are different versions out there, not sure which one is the best.

I loved the Moby Wrap (bought on Amazon), and used it with my second baby. With my third baby, I did not use it at all for the first 2 months, since carrying any weight was painful with my c-section recovery. Since then, I have researched and found the Ergo baby carrier, which I recently used and really love. I was able to carry my baby for hours without neck, shoulder and back pain. It's well worth the money, but if you want to save some $, try to find it used in good condition. Good luck!

I love my two Karmnababy slings. I have a bunch of carriers of all styles and I find myself always grabbing my sling. I can sit easily in it, which is handy for taking the toddler to classes, etc. unlike if I'm wearing a wrap or a backpack. I do use the wrap, however, when I'm vacuuming or going for walks, though. And when they get to be about 20 lbs, I then switch to Mei Tai carriers--I have a cloth one and a buckle one.

In short, if you are serious about carrying, you may find yourself wanting different carriers for different activities ;-)

I have a "SlingLings" sling and I put both my infant and my 2 yr old in it (at different times of course!) It is nice b/c it folds very compact and can be put on quickly. No buckles or adjustments necessary. (You buy a size based on your/mommy's body size.) I bought it b/c they say you can nurse with it, but I couldn't figure that one out! I like that if I take both kids out with just the single stroller, then I can switch them or carry one when she gets tired of walking. (Mine are 16 months apart.)

I have a Baby Bjorn and Jeep brand front carriers, both of which which are nice for more active activities like hiking, but are kinda complex to put on. I had trouble with the baby in my way for washing dishes and stuff, so I didn't use it a lot. (If you choose this style, I don't think the Bjorn is worth 2x as much $$)

There is a recent recall on some slings due to babies being asphyxiated by them. I think they called it "compression asphyxiation".

Anyway, do some research on the slings because there are some dangerous ones out there.

My son didn't like slings (I tried 4 different types), but LOVED my Baby Bjorn. It had neck support for him when he was littler, and then you could fold it over when he was bigger. It was so wonderful that I bought a second (check your local consignment shops, eBay, or Craigslist before you pay full price for one).

Definitely go with a Moby wrap. I tried every type of baby wearing item out there with my first baby since she would never let me put her down. I have everything from slings, to mei tie wraps, to the ergo carrier...you name it. I finally found the Moby wrap and it was the best thing I had used. I especially loved it when my second was a newborn and I was chasing around a 2 year old. It holds them very securely and I never had any back pain. I am now using it for my 3rd who is 8 months old and get compliments on it all hte time. People are always asking me where I got it. I read a lot about baby wearing and heard that the famous "baby bjorn" is not good on their hip development because of hte way it holds them. So I never used one but some people love them. I once saw a baby being carried by the Dad in a bjorn and I had to go up to him because the poor baby's legs were turning purple from lack of circulation!!! Scared me to ever use one after that. Just do a search online for a Moby wrap and after a few times, you will get the hang of putting it on. It's really very simple :) good luck!

I highly recommend the Moby carrier which i used all the time (as did my husband) with our 4th child---yup, I needed the hands free, too! The moby has the coziness of a sling but with even more support, evenly distributed and the baby is secure to your body, not swinging around like in a sling. It also adapts as the baby grows and is completely reasonable in price. good luck!

Look for SleepyWrap on Amazon. It is the most comfortable carrier, especially for a newborn/young infant. I loved it! It will take a little longer the first few times you get the baby in, but once you get it down it is super easy. And, it is inexpensive! Good luck!

Great question. I enjoyed reading the responses - even though I have tried 5 carriers/slings, I'm always looking at what is out there (I have a 3 mo old girl and 2 1/2 yr old son). Moby wrap was too much material for me and I found that I was getting hot with both my summer baby & winter baby. Must be hormonal, because I was always cold natured before having babies. Love, love, love my Ergo carrier. Still use it for travel w/ 2 yr old & I got the infant insert for baby girl. It feels very secure and comfortable. I just got a Mammasmilk sling for baby girl and I like it. It is a bit adjustable, so I feel like I can get the right fit. It folds up nicely in the diaper bag, so I always have it on hand. She can be screaming one minute, then I put her in the sling and she falls right to sleep. I highly recommend it. I also had a Dr. Sears ring sling with my son, but never got the hang of it. And, I had a hand-me-down Bjorn for my son. It worked fine, but I prefered the Ergo. The Ergo sport (black) is made of super soft material. It just feels better than the other version. Sling vs. carrier all comes down to your personal preference. I personally like having my Mammasmilk sling in some instances and the Ergo carrier in others. Going back & forth between the 2 seems to give baby (& my back) variety, too. I hope this info helps!

I have used a ring sling for all of my infants and loved it. I am expecting baby #4 in June and just bought an Ergo and am SO excited! I will use the ring sling while the baby is small but then probably the Ergo. My 2 year old loves to use the Ergo now. I can use it even though I am pregnant. The waist strap buckles around my hips instead of my waist!
You are right that a baby carrier will be very helpful!

I can't rave enough about Baby K'tan slings!! I wish I only found it sooner :) Here's the website http://www.babyktan.com so you can see for yourself. I love that it sits on both shoulders to evenly distribute your baby's weight, plus unlike the Moby or traditional wrap slings, there isn't an enormous amount of fabric to fiddle with. It's basically two loops of fabric connected with a smaller loop, so all the "wrapping" is done for you. The weight limit is really high too: 42 pounds!! I love the Moby wrap. It is simple to use, with all the security of a Baby Bjorn while still allowing you to nurse on the go. I was always afraid that my baby would wiggle out of a sling somehow, but I didn't like how the carriers had so many buckles, etc. If you are the least bit crafty you can even find the pattern for making your own Moby-type wrap online. It was definitely the best shower gift I got.

I love my Baby K'Tan. So easy, so comfortable and washable.

I used both a Slingling Pocket Sling and a Moby Wrap. Once my daughter got larger, I invested in a buckle type Mei Tai carrier. I only have one child...and the $35 I spent on the Moby Wrap was the best money spent on any piece of baby gear.
