So What Happened?

So I bought "My baby can Read" and my son absolutely loves it. Every morning he wakes up he wants his movie. He has learned a lot of new words in a fairly short amount of time and he dances to the songs they have on there. While I don't think he is learning to read, he has learned the words and puts them wih the pictures that follow. Glad I got it.

Hi Tiff,

My husband bought this and I thought what a waste of money!! But seriously...my son is now 18 months and he's been watching since about 6 months and I can tell he's learning for sure, he can read a couple words from the cards they give you, and he'll say "Tiger" when he see's one either at the zoo or on the video, he's not at the level they show the babies on the commercial but he's def learning. Hope this helps.

We have watched the dvds but not as often as they say to.
We watch one of the five dvds twice a week or so.

He enjoys them, they have real video of what ever the word is not just drawings. They have some fun songs. I am not sure he has learned to read, but he has been exposed to lots of words in print and then video of that word.

The other dvd set we use is Signing Time. (We have 16 of the over thirty dvds) He wants to watch them all the time, but usually only gets one to two a day. He has a great vocabulary in American Sign Language. Which makes it easier to know what he wants when he has not yet learned to say the word. He is 21 months and had problems with inner ear fluid when he was younger, he got tubes a few months ago and is talking much more.

in order to actually have your baby read from them you have to watch it daily with them and the same video over and over for a month or two. I bought the system because I used to sell them with Usborne Books, Usborne no longer carries them, but I say the same thing I said then for a set of kid videos it's a good price--it's kids talking to the kids and reading the words and there are cute songs and little activities. my daughter responded to the videos over other baby videos. I didn't push her to watch it daily. she could recognize the words hi, car and star however at age 3 she no longer recognizes any of those words but car (from the movie cars I think) so it is good exposure I think you have to be pretty fanatical to get your kid reading at that age and it is word recognition. I like that it introduces all kinds of animals to the baby.
I gave some away as gifts to family and friends and they all feel the same way, nice kid video but not so much for actually reading.

I personally don't like the idea of introducing young children to TV. The child therapists that I have talked to don't recommend TV before the age of 2, even educational videos. They say that the colors and flashes of lights are mesmerizing, and can hold their attention, but it really isn't good for them. I've heard of just using flashcards yourself, reading to your child and interacting can be just as beneficial. I don't think that there is any need to make a child read by 12 months. It doesn't mean that that child is going to be any smarter than any other in the long run, and it can take away some important bonding time if you are only focusing on quantifying their learning instead of enjoying their childhood. Give them educational things to do and expose them to all types of ideas, and you will have a child that thinks for himself, and may just love to learn.
On the flip side, if you happen to believe in having your child watch TV, educational material is always better, just don't expect miracles. If it seems too good to be true - it is!

We have it, and we LOVE IT!! My son watched it every day (the only thing he would watch) but at about 12 months, he was done. He will only watch for about 5 minutes now. Not sure how those other moms on the infomercial keep them watching til 5 years old. But he got a lot out of it. and we will use it with our next one.
