Well the local health unit is a good place to start if she is already months old she needs her shots! From a well seasoned mom. Ps You could offer to drive her! Maybe offer a coffee out before you go!

My son had well baby visits where they checked him over, took his vitals, measured and weighed him, talked to me about his health and progress, and did vaccinations at 1 week, 2 weeks, 2 mos, 4, 6, 9, 12, 18, and 24 mos. So she is probably due for one right about now.

I don't think there is any way you can force someone to take their kids to the doctor if they don't want to go. I know a family that doesn't believe in medical treatments for religious reasons, so their 3 young children have never been to the doctor once. I am sure every state is different, but unless there is reason to believe they are being negligent and you call social services, I don't think they can be forced to go. Does the lack of prenatal care have something to do with why the baby was hospitalized at birth? I guess that might be considered negligence if so. Does she say why she doesn't want to go to the doctor? I think the only thing you can do is encourage her strongly to see a doctor, unfortunately. I hope you can. But again, she might already have an appointment made for next week.

Well baby checks are usually within 5-7 days, then 2 weeks, then every two months until 6months, then 9 months, 12months, 18 months, 2yrs, and then once a year from that point, unless the doctor recommends otherwise.
So, she is probably due for an appt soon, but is likely on track.
Most states offer discount or no cost coverage for well baby checks, thru like DSHS for people who are financially stressed.

If the baby checks out well at the one week check-up, the doctor may not choose to have another check-up until about three months of age. Check-ups are often connected to the schedule for having immunizations. Someone else mentioned that if she wants her child to go to public school, she'll have to have those immunizations, but there is even an option for a parent to sign religious or personal conviction wavers on those. I agree that it is her business and you should not be concerned about this issue unless you actually see some signs that the child is not well. Even then, be cautious of how you approach mentioning anything to her, because it could damage your friendship and not help the child at all.

No she doesn't have to. Some people have their babies at home and don't have doctors and don't do vaccines etc. I mean if she wants to put her baby in public school ever she will have to at that point but if she chooses to homeschool then I don't think it would ever come up. If she is caring for the baby then it is her decision when they need to go to the dr. My dr does visits every month until 6months, but every dr is different.

Our Pediatrician has well-baby check ups at: 1-3 days after discharge from the hospital, then at: 2 weeks, 1 month, 2 months, 3 months, 4 months, 5 months, 6 months, then 9 months, 12 months, 15 months, 18 months, 2 years old.

Hmmm.... well, that is her business. But if you feel she is ignorant then politely suggest that.
Or, if you think she is negligent and not caring for her baby...then that is another story.... and the welfare of the baby is paramount.

all the best,
Susan

You're a good friend for looking out for your friend and her baby. The answer to your question is Yes! All babies go back to the doctor's about a week or so after having their babies. (I had my kids over 20 years ago and remember taking them back for infant well checks. I even had a nurse come to my home after my first one was to check on both of us)

I think you should talk to your friend and let her know the it's important for her and her baby to be checked out by the doctor.

Yes, there are typically well appointments for monitoring and vaccines at just a few days out of the hosipital, 1 mo, 3 mo, 6 mo, sometimes 9 mo & 12 mo. Though every pediatrician is a little different and might have their own schedule.

Is it possible your friend does not have insurance and does not have the money to pay for even a clinic? If this is so, she may be eligible for child medicare/medical. This way the child is covered even if the parents aren't and the child can have the healthcare it needs. Especially since public schools need children's vaccinations up to date to attend (I think?).

I understand your concern and you might mention this option if the cost is what is stopping her from getting proper care. If it's not, then unless you see a major problem not being taken care of, stay out of it =) It's their choice whether to go to a Dr or not...and scary as it can be for you, it's not your responsibility.

Yes, my kids went in a few days home from the hospital, 2 weeks later to check baby's weight and for Jaundice. Also the regular check ups are usually at 2,4,6,9 months and 1 year for vaccines.

My baby was in the hospital for three weeks. We went to the doctor after she got out but then we didn't go again until three months for the first set of vaccines. As long as the baby is fine, eating well and seems to be gaining weight there is no need to go to the doctors office just for a check-up.
