Babies and Berries

Several years ago a mom-friend told me it was better not to introduce berries to babies until after 9 months. Anyone else heard this? Any experiences positive or negative introducing them before 9 months?

ETA: I hadn't even thought about the choking part because I planned on giving them mashed. Thanks for bringing that up, good point! I'm mainly just wondering about the effect on baby's tummy.

What can I do next?

Babies can be allergic to berries. The reaction can be a diaper rash---from mild to really bad--or a rash on their body. My son had a rash around his mouth when we first gave him strawberries. We waited until he was a year and now he just gets strawberry all over his face.

One of my nephews had the same thing, rash on his face.

Aside from the acidity issue, as mentioned by another poster, I don't know of any reason not to feed berries, properly prepared to minimize choking risk, of course.

Our awesome pediatrician advised that we "open the cupboards and have fun" when it came to feeding our babies. With the exception of avoiding honey until after 1 year, that is what we did. They ate everything.

I think it is an allergy thing, like peanut butter.

Our pedi told us to hold off on fruit of all kind until later since they are so sweet. It conditions them to ask for sweeter things and turn down less sweet foods (like peas or green beans).

They tend to be acidic (particularly strawberries) and can, therefore, cause poop issues (i.e., diaper rash). That's the basic reason to hold off.

I don't recall what age I introduced them, but I do recall that we discovered that blueberries, strawberries, blackberries, and cranberry juice broke her out in a rash all over her body. We kept her away from them for about a year, and tried her on them again, and she was fine.

Its strawberries, blueberries, raspberries and blackberries that are an issue because they cause diaper rash. Not sure why but it did in both my kids.

Suggest calling your ped and asking ... Recommendations change all the time. Regardless, berries should be smashed, strained, and fed with a spoon so infants don't choke. They also shouldn't have them before 6 mos.

I wouldn't be giving the baby berries, raw, this young. Don't know exactly why other than diarrhea from all the acid in them.

I truly think kids need formula/breast milk first for the first year. Once they've taken all the will of that then food is offered.

Honestly, kids don't die from eating food but formula or breast milk is certainly exactly what nature made for babies to eat.

I'd be feeding the kiddo stuff that is healthy for them.

Go to your local library and check out a couple of books. They were my favorite books for cooking. I borrowed them from the library for a long time then finally went and bought my own.

I heard at day care not to give pop corn to anyone under 2 or 3 years old.
It was a choking hazard.
Same thing with grapes - they said to cut them in half first.
At home I gave our son one piece of popcorn at a time when he was 2 and he had no trouble with it.
I think berries might be a choking hazard.
Pureed or in jam or jelly (on a cracker) it should be fine.
