My 3 month old has had an awful diaper rash for about a week now. We usually use cloth diapers, but he has been in disposables for a week. I have been using Aquaphor on it since it first appeared. Please help!!!

So What Happened?

Thanks everyone for all the advice. I can't believe how many responses I have received. But his rash ended up being a yeast rash. I used yogurt on it and it went away. I will definitely keep all this info for future reference. Thanks again!!!

I agree fully with the Butt Paste endorsement another one of the ladies gave. That is the most incredible diaper rash cream I have found.

Aveeno makes a good diaper rash cream too.

Just an FYI: If you use the cream and it doesn't go away, it could be a yeast based diaper rash. My son had that, and I put Monistat cream (the kind that comes in the package that you use for external itching) on it & it was gone in a matter of 2 days.

BUTT PASTE! THIS STUFF IS GREAT!!! My twins had horrible diaper rashes whenever they would encounter to much raw sugar or fruit juices. I didn't come across Butt Paste until they were almost ready to start potty training...but what little I used was wonderful. I also would advise an aveeno bath and a little cornstarch powder. I also made my own wipes. Regular baby wipes can irriate a diaper rash.

Here is the recipe:

1 rubbermaid container (10 cup, # 9)
1 roll of Bounty or Brawny (or your favorite soft) Paper towels
MAKE SURE THEY ARE WHITE AND FREE OF DYES
1 Teaspoon Baby Oil
2 Teaspoon Baby Bath
2 Cups water (or less)

Mix in container water, baby oil and baby bath. Cut whole roll of towels in half, remove cardboard core, place towels in liquid. Let liquid absorb into towels. Pull wipes from center.

I actually just kept this liquid handy and would dip soft paper towel into this mixture, ring it out and wipe their bottoms. It is alcohol free, which doesn't make the rash worse.

I hope this helps. Being a first time mom with a baby with horrible diaper rash is horrible!!!

Good luck...Lee

I know cloth diapers CAN be good- but they can also be really bad. Alot of people think they are washing them good, they look/smell clean, but they are not. You cant use bleach b/c it will hurt their little bottoms, and you have to be careful about what soap you do use. the fact is- your water at home is not hot enough to wash the diapers well enough and urine and poop stay in the diaper and irritate their skin. I was going to use cloth, but after researching it I decided not to. If you want to use cloth I would look into a diaper service. They wash them in REALLY hot water so you wont have the problem.

For disposables, use the generic. Disposables have alot of chemicals in them to make them absorbant. Huggies are the WORST! Dont use them. They have more chemicals then any other diaper. Generics have less, which is why they are not as absorbant. Change his diaper about every hour in the disposables- I am not sure why some people let the dipe get so wet before they change it. As for cream- try the original A&D ointment. It really works better then any diaper cream I have ever used. Load it on there. It really protects him, and it doesnt wipe off on the diaper like alot of the other creams- it also doesnt get all caked on there like some of them. Regular corn starch is good too, like the kind you bake with. Dont use the smelly stuff you can buy on the baby aisle, that might irritate him. I would also let him air out as much as possble, and let him sit in a warm bath for a few mins at night- make sure no soap is in the water- just let his bottom soak for a bit.

I would get him looked at to make sure it's not yeast. But seriously- ORIGINAL A&D- not the diaper cream A&D. It REALLY works.

Caldesene Powder (pink bottle)
Liquid Maalox (just not citrus kinds)
Cortizone (generic is good)

Hi! I am the mom of 6 and I will tell you what our ped told us to use when they were little...in a bowl mix....

A&D or desitin
Vitamin e
malox/mylanta

put on everytime you change the baby...
The A&D/Desitin will coat the baby
The vitamin e will help heal
and the Malox/Mylanta will cool it so it doesn't feel like it's burning
It might actually feel like it's actually very cold to them when you first put it on but it will sooth the baby while healing and protecting from more urine or rubbing by the diaper..good luck!

my son can home from the hospital with a rash so bad it was bleeding....the only thing that worked was I would give him a bath in the morn.(sponge bath then he was too little for a full bath at the time). I would take a towel and set with him outside for about 10 min. So his little butt could air out,but with it being cold I would just sit with him in the house. When he was completely dry I would put Desitin on him and then just made sure he was changed alot during the day. Hope it helps :)

My son now 20 months had horrible diaper rash. His pediatrician prescribed (but you can buy it on the shelf in the drugstore/target) Boudreaux's buttpaste. She said it has zinc and that will help to cure the horrible rash that he had. We now have several tubes all over the house. It is the BEST.

Not sure if anyone else suggested this, it's something my mom told me once. When you change his diaper, after cleaning him up, let him lay without a diaper or any cream for 30 mins or so. Make sure you have something under him in case he has an accident tho! :)

Hope he's doing better!

Also, have you tried calling your doctor? Maybe they can tell you something to try before you have to take him in.

I didn't notice the name, but whoever said about using generic diapers is right. Most name brand diapers are made with latex while the off brand ones are latex free. I've always used the WWHite Cloud diapers from Wal-Mart (and the big boxes they come in are great for storage too). My first son had diaper rash so bad that his skin cracked and bled, and I never even thought he may have inherited my latex allergy until his rash cleared up and I noticed the package said they were latex free. A regular diaper rash can keep turning into a yeast rash because it stays warm and moist. This is just a posibility.

Hello...I had the same problem with my son when he was smaller. You can mix equal parts of aquaphor and mylanta antacid medicine and it will clear up in a day or so. It's hard to get the parts equal, but as long as you have the antacid liquid mixed in it works. You can use a small pill container to mix it in.

I agree with all these others moms on the butt paste. But I have to offer this advice too, you've been using cloth diapers and then switched to disposables. He could be like my daughter, extra sensitive to the perfumes in disposables. I had to use cloth diapers on her until I got her potty trained. I only used disposables when we had to go out, like to get her picture taken or some place I needed her to stay dry for a while. Then I had to endure a horrible rash on her behind that took about a week to heal. Hope he's better by now.

Hi, this may sound crazy but it really works. Get some regular flower and put into a frying pan and brown it, let it cool and pour into a ziplock baggie, and then apply to the area after diaper changes and it will clear the rash right up. When I was first told about it, I looked at my aunt like she was nuts, but nothing that I had bought was working, so I tried it, and it really works, I used it on all my children, and have passed it on to other moms I know.

My son is 19 mos. and keeps getting rashes too. You may want to check his formula, my son has a problem with whole milk messing up his bowels and that is what keeps causing the rash, he is doing better since I went to 1% but not the best yet, I am considering trying Soy to see if it helps! As far as creams you may need a prescription cream if it's real red and my doctor said to but zinc oxide and put it over it. Zinc oxide is found in most diaper rash creams but they have other chemicals as well, he says zinc oxide itself is best, it acts as a barrier to protect the skin from wetness, therefore you should use it all the time. Also I give my son a bath with Baking Soda in it. He is no longer in an infant tub so I put 3 tbsp. in his water and mix it up, I would guess 1 would be plenty for an infant tub but I would check with the doctor to be sure.

well i am sure he is fine by now but one thing i wanted to let you know for future referance is a resipe for home made wipes. take a roll of paper towels and cut it in half with the tube still in it. in a large tupperware (big enough to fit the half sized roll) put in about 1/4-1/2cup of mild body wash for babys add a few tablespoons of baby lotion and fill it about 3/4 of the way with hot water (to disolve the lotion) mix it well. take the tube out of the roll and put the towels in the water. cover and shake. for best despensing pull from the center. if the top get left off or anything they can be revived with a little warm water.
ps. these are great for older kids with sensitive skin for quick clean up or in the bathroom.

Hey, you have lots of suggestions, but here's my own. I stayed at home with my girls for the first twenty months, then they went to daycare. They have had more diaper rash because at first I bought wipes other than pampers sensitive and I also think the ladies wiped their bottoms after every change. I used to wipe their bottoms only after a poop and heavy peepee diapers. I also use A&D ointment because the older generation swears by it for all kinds of things, although lots of other creams work too. My girls are also sensitive to certain kinds of diapers and this can be different for every child, now they use regular pampers, but white cloud was good too. If it is a yeast infection it will not respond to these treatments and I suggest organic yougurt, sensitive wipes and not wiping more than you have too so good bacteria can stay on the bottom, along with a topical anti-fungal like miconizole cream.

A lot of babies cant wear disposable diapers. You may want to switch back. Also, most people I know who have tried diaper rash cremes have had best results with Bourdeax Butt Paste. That includes me and the hospital my son was born at. If you have started foods, it could be what your child is eating...or drinking. You might want to ask your doctor.

Depending on the tub you use, such as an infant tub still, next time you give your baby a bath place a small amount of baking soda in the water. It helps neutralize the acid in urine. Also, A&D Ointment is the best thing you can use. I used Aveeno and other diaper rash creams on my baby and he would scream from pain. My Pediatrician also recommended, don't laugh but it's called Butt Paste (apply it thick). You can get it at Wal-Mart, Target, and some pharmacies. Be careful of baby powder with small infants. Doctors talk against it just because the dust from the powder can be breathed in their little lungs when applying.

I read another response about adding vinegar to the bath water but depending on the severity of the rash it could burn. My sons rash was so severe that even regular diaper rash burned him so that's why I question the vinegar against the severity of your sons rash. The baking soda will not burn

Let us know what happens

I've been there! Aquaphor is just a bacic vaseline. The only thing I have found to work best is Corn Starch. Seems weird but my grandmother said that's what they used to use. I would put it on heavy every diaper change. I put it on my 6 month old every night before he goes to bed just to keep him dry. Hope this helps! If it doesnt go away after 2 days of corn starch it may be a yeast infection. Usually, you can see a difference after a couple applications of corn starch. Oh,and never use baby powder - there is too much perfume in it.

My oldest - now 8 only had a few rashes and the only thing that worked for her was the original A&D ointment. Everything else would make it worse.

My middle (33mo) has been blessed - barely a rash to speak of and whatever samples I had on hand worked - except the fresh tube of A&D I bought that worked so well on her sister!

My youngest (22mo) well now there's a different story! She's had rash after rash after rash. Twice it's been yeast and her ped has us use an irritation cream like vagasil twice a day when it's yeast - she showed me how the bumps are different so I could tell. For normal rashes only one product cleared her up - Arbonne diaper creme. The whole product line is only available through consultants and is conpletely natural. (oddly she's allergic to their baby lotion but not the baby oil or shampoo go figure) and is about $8 for a tube. For general prevention when she was in diapers I found luck with both Aveeno and Burts Bees.

Fresh air to the hind section is great, and you could try making your own wipes. Mix 2 parts water to 1 part baby soap with a pinch of baby oil in a round rubbermaid kitchen storage container. Cut a roll of Bounty select a size paper towels in half (you'll want a seraded bread knife), loosen the end so it's free and put the half roll in the container. viola. homemade, sensitive economical baby wipes. If you can't/don't want to do that - I second the reccomendation for Pampers sensative wipes. They are the only manufactured ones I can use on my rash prone youngest.

Put the baby down on a play mat or blanket on his belly for some tummy time and keep the back of the diaper open to get air. I alternated aquaphor and then cornstarch everytime I changed the diaper. I also used Butt Paste which worked well too. In the bath I would use aveeno oatmeal soak and just let the baby sit in it. Good Luck!

Hi L.,
I have a 10 month who has been plagued by bad diaper rashes. She has exema all over her legs arms and torso, so this makes the diaper rash much easier to get. If your little one also has exema or rough patches on his skin that sometimes turn red, then using aquafor is great. However, you should first put on some sort of nystatin or vagisil, then cover with aquafor. This is all that ever worked with my daughter. But, if your baby has no other signs of exema, then the diaper rash is probably just simple diaper rash and I do reccomend butt paste from the drug store.

My name is K., I have a suggestion that will help out alot. I have a 4 yr old daughter. All you have to do, is get some old fashioned oatmeal, put it in bath water, and let your child soak in it for a few minutes. Take child out of bath water. Do not put diaper on!!! Let your child lay around and let his bottom dry!!! Has to be bone dry. Then put desiten on affected area. Do that for about 3 days, and it will be gone.
The oatmeal will absorb the yeast in the infection. It is also really cheap!!

Quit using the Aquaphor, it is actually trapping moisture in the rash and it needs to be dried out. I recommend just good old fashioned destin. Walmart carries the same brand in their name. Don't get the creamy stuff, just the original, you can put some in your hand and work it with your finger til it is smoother and it should go on a little easier, but I have a friend whose little boy used to get it really bad, and it would clear him up within a few hours. You might also want to check into some unscented, nothing in them wipes. no aloe or anything as this can irritate the diaper rash on certain children. I wish you the best.

Hi L...between my kids and my nieces and nephews i babysat, I've changed diapers of over 26 kids..lol.
Use Desitin when you are putting a fresh diaper on, its really great and thick, so it doesnt wipe right off in the diaper. Use it EVERY time you change him, even if he doesnt have a rash..it will prevent any rashes in the future.

For now, let your son go without a diaper as much as possible. Keep a changing pad under a soft blanket and let him lie on it. Keep a little powder on his bottom, but the best cure is fresh air and it'll keep his bottom dry. When you have to dress him, use the desitin and change him at the very least once an hour, even if you dont think he's wet.

While he has the rash, dont use wipes because they will burn and irritate. Use soft clothe and wet under warm water, (the best clothe to use are the cloth diapers, they are so soft).

Once the rash is gone, use wipes for sensitive skin. If your son does have sensitive skin, using cloth diapers could be a problem, as there is nothing to pull the wetness away and the urine just sits against his skin.
Good luck.

First if you usually use cloth I would go back to that, the chemicals/gels in disposables can be irritating to their skin and going against the treatment you are doing. My 2nd used to get frequent diaper rashes that stopped just by switching to
cloth. We have not been able to full time cloth my 3rd but when she gets a rash one of the first things I do is switch to using cloth more and it makes a big difference.

Next when looking for a diaper rash cream check the zinc oxide content, you want zinc oxide in it and you want a good amount. IE Desitin has a good amount but Desitin Creamy does not, read the labels. Aqauphor doesnt have any, is great for irritated skin but not always for diaper rash.

Third, if the rash is very red, raised and/or bumpy it could be a yeast rash and none of the OTC things will help. Disposables get very warm b/c of the waterproof layer so actually make yeast rashes not go away or get worse. I would use cloth for this and try to avoid a cover when possible. Then use an OTC anti yeast cream instead of a diaper rash cream.

Last if the baby is breastfed and you had something in your diet to aggravate the GI or recently switched formulas (or given formula), etc that could effect bowels especially if runny it could be acidic and bother baby. For this we are always told to use liquid Mylanta

Oh and I agree with everyone else on letting him air out so going no diaper or waiting a while after you take diaper off before putting on new one, and the cloth diapers breath better

Hi, I was just looking through all the wonderful advice and saw only one post recommending Bag Balm. I had a friend recommend it to me and now it is the only thing I use, better than Desitin! It is in the pet section at Wal-Mart. Also if the rash is very red and has little bumps it may be a yeast rash. An over-the-counter antifungal like Monistat or Lotramin AF is safe to use and you can get the store brand, it's cheaper. I've heard cornstarch can make yeast worse, so you probably want to rule that out before trying it.

Are you sure it isn't a yeast rash? If it is the ointment is only making it worse.

Try some naked butt time to let him air out.

Have you tried airing your babies bottom out for awhile. We use to use the depend pads (the ones that are flat and lay on the floor or under a sheet, not the ones you wear). We would air my daughter out for around an hour at a time and let her play on the absorbant pads naked. It may sound stupid, but if airing the baby out make sure there is no cream on the rash area so the area is exposed to the air. One of my friends said it never worked for her baby, but she always had rash cream on her bottom.

We switched to Desitin after she started getting rashes. We used something else prior, but found desiting worked the best for us.

If it's really bad the Dr. can give you some cream to help with the rash.

Hope these ideas help.

First of all you may want to change the type of diaper that you are using your lil boy may be allergic!Second, of all I've found that the best thing in the world for diaper rash is "Silvidine" it is a RX but all you need to do is call and most peds. will call it in for you if you explain what you want it for!!And if you'll apply it several times a day and put a thick layer and put some vasoline or reg diaper rash ointment on top that way it doesn't wash away so quickly it should clear it up in a day or two!!Good Luck!!T.

Hi L.:

Have you tried rubbing some corn starch on your son? A lot of times, that helps. Also, if you have him on any juices, the acid from the juice causes terrible diaper rash, too. Dilute them to 1/4 juice to 3/4 water. Also, if you're around home a lot, let him go without a diaper. Let the air get to him. That also helps, too. Good luck.

Hi L.. Aquaphor can be irritating- that's what my son's doctor said. You should use plain vaseline and tons of it (in globs, without rubbing it in) after every diaper change. If you can use wash cloths instead of wipes, that should help, too. Also, extra baths (just the soaking) might help. Good luck to you- I've been there.

diaper rashes are awful, two of my children are boys and thet got it the worse, my oldest son which is now eight years old had a rash for nearly two months to the point of bleeding. (you wanna talk about putting mom and baby both in tears) Anyway pamers has a disposable diaper thats medicated. There kinda expensive but i was at the end of my rope and bought them, in three days the rash was gone and i only used those diapers when another rash came and kept to my usaul diapers when there was no rash present.

The thing I was told to use when my son had a bad rash such as the one that you are describing was simple old Vaseline. Instead of going out of your house to buy some type of expensive diaper rash cream, try the Vaseline first (if you have it lying around your house). It really works wonders.

Talk to your doc, it might not be a daiper rash but a yeast infection. I know it sounds weird but my second child came home from the hospital with one. Remeber all yeast needs to grow is warm moist place, that is perfect for their little bottoms. I just used over the counter yeast medication.

All of these responses are great. I would leave my son out of a diaper as long as possible. The worst the could happen is a little pee to clean up. lol If you need to put the diaper on him, what worked for me was A & D first then powder on top of that.

Also someone said wipes were a problem. When their skin is raw the alcohol on some wipes can really hurt so the washcloth is a great idea. I hope you find the relief he needs.

Since he is so young, this suggestion might not help. I used to just let my son sit in the tub for 15 minutes or so. He was allergic to his own urine. He was severely allergic to Desitine. My advice for you is, after a poopy diaper, instead of wiping him, bathe him, also, stop using ALL cremes for a few days if possible. When home, lay him on the floor with no diaper on and let the air get to him. If is is a yeast infection, go to the store and get some monistat cream. That is what the docs usually give for that. Yes, boys do get yeast infections as do females.

Good luck

I hope that it has gotten better by now, but I always use Aveeno Baby Diaper Rash Cream. I also use Luvs Diapers. Not only are they less expensive, they also prevent most of the leaks for little boys and they soak up a little bit better to keep the bottoms more dry. I hope that this helps and I pray that your little ones little tush gets better. Oh, also try the Aveeno Baby oatmeal bath. It is tear free and it helps soothe their irritated skin. It comes in little packets that you pour into the bath water. So far the Aveeno products have worked wonders for my son.

L., I have heard through the grapevine that cornstarch works well on diaper rash, but please get a second opinion before you take my word; I've never used it. The absolute best rash cream I've used is the Desitin Overnight relief. It is thick, very creamy, and keeps her from having any redness at all. Nothing else seemed to work as good for me.

L., Sometimes bathing them in warm water and baking soda helps clean it and then put the cream on. We have used anything with zinc oxide and it usually worked pretty quickly. Hi L.,
Different things work for each baby. But, here a few tips from my Pediatrician when my little ones had really bad diaper rash. However, I would first take him to the Pediatrician anyway to make sure it's not something other than a normal diaper rash.

Try not to use wipes - it just irritates the skin more. Don't use soap. Use a warm (even a little on the cool side), VERY SOFT, washcloth to clean his bottom - try to just blot, rather than wipe. The product that I found helped the most with my kids was Caldesene Protecting Powder. It it a Zinc Oxide/Talc powder. It really protects the skin from wetness. They could go pee-pee in their diaper and when I changed the diaper, their skin was completely dry. It really protects!! I agree with the others too - if you can possibly leave the diaper off of him, even it's only minutes at a time, it will help the healing process.

Congratulations on your new little one. Hope the rash gets better soon.
L.

we always used Boudreaux's Butt Paste & then put cornstarch baby powder over it so that the paste would stay on their bottoms & not just on the diaper.
also, as soon as a rash popped up, we were changing ever 2 hours, or as soon as we noticed they had wet the diaper.
