Asthma at Daycare Center (Not Homecare)

Does anyone have experiences, good or bad, with their child getting a breathing treatment at daycare? My son needs breathing treatments with a nebulizer (not a portable inhaler) from time to time for asthma, but how does that work at daycare? Do they just ask you to keep him home and treat him yourself until he's better? Or do they try to set up the nebulizer with lots of other kids around? I'm curious.

What can I do next?

Hi J.,
They should be able to handle this like any other medication. When I worked in a child care we did them---yes--with all the kids around. It was not a big deal. The office staff/directors usually did them to alleviate the pressure for the teachers since it takes longer. I agree with telling them the times or symptoms to watch for to signal one is needed.

Generally they are taken to the office and the director will do them at her desk. You don't want to scare other children. They may not understand what they are doing. I have a day care at home and I've had to do them myself. It's not hard to do with other children around, but it does take awhile.

They should be able to handle just like when you send medicine for him to take for a cold or infection. Have the perscripton, fill out the paper work. That should be it. I have a home daycare and that's what I always did.

Not at all. The ones I know were able to provide the treatment to a child. Some even keep a nebulizer on hand. Just show them how to do it if the meds you use are a type that you have to mix prior to administering them. Most daycares are used to this these days. Be sure to tell them the times for the treatments (as needed usually doesn't mean anything to them.) and have them track the times they gave the treatments so that you know when you get home.

Good luck.
