I have a almost 3 year old that was recently diagnosed with asthma. Whenever he gets a cold, he ends up having a dry cough all night long. We have done all the breathing treatments and other things that we need to do but he still coughs constantly. I was just wondering if any other parents with kids with asthma have had this issue and what worked for them. We have been in touch with drs. and their suggestions are not working either.

My now 3yo has had that problem since he was 5-months-old. He was put on Singulair and that helped a TON. We also switched from Albuterol to Xopenex (Albuterol wasn't working well enough) and do Pulmicort twice a day when he has cold-like symptoms. An humidifier makes a HUGE difference. My boys can't sleep without one when they're sick. Good luck!

My kids don't have asthma but my daughter had allergies that would keep her coughing. Putting her in a bathroom with hot steam filling the room for about 15 minutes and then running the humidifier at night really helped. Also, I'd give her benedryl. This also helped with my kids' colds because it always comes with a terrible cough... good luck!

My son had the same problem. We had albuterol..then switched to Xopenex (same stuff but not hyper side effect). Those are "rescue" therapies made to open up his airways. He is four and last Oct. the breathing treatments just were not working and we landed in the hospital for 36 hours. It was scary. Our dr put him on Pulmicort...a once a day breathing treatment that is actually a preventative. It keeps the airways free from swelling and irratation which leads to the coughing/wheezing episodes. When he gets a cold we use the pulmicort twice a day do the Xopenex every four hours just to be safe....so far so good. Colds are much easier to get through. We also noticed even when he is well a difference...he has less congestion and zero random coughing.

You can look up pulmicort on the web...their web site was very helpful in my understanding of it all.

The Singulaire idea is great, as well as putting in the air purifier in the bedroom(we have a hepa-filter air purifier). Our son had a chronic cough at night that was very upsetting, and doing both of these things definitely helped enormously.

We have a daughter that was diagnosed with asthma at 2. She is almost 4 now. We see an asthma specialist on top of her ped. Best advice from him (aside from doing breathing treatments every day) is NOT to have any type of humidifer in their rooms, ever. Once a humidifier or vaporizor is used, he told us, you can never get them fully cleaned, even after just one use. Our pediatrician still recommends humidifiers (when they have colds) and we just ignore her, and go with the asthma specialist. The only type of humidifier that should be used is a whole house humidifier. They are not expensive and can be attached to an existing heating system. We also have an air purifier in her room that runs all night, even when she doesn't have a cold. Good luck, these little tips really made a difference for us.

K.,
Thankfully, my children don't have asthma. So sorry your son does.
I have been with Shaklee for 15 years and truly believe the chemicals we unknowingly bring into our homes sometimes cause these conditions or make them worse.
Shaklee's owner's son had a severe asthma attack just about the time he bought Shaklee. His wife Sloan Barnett is a contributor to NBC on consumer issues and did a thorough investigation of why this may have happened to her son since no one in either her or her husband's families ever had any lung issues. She determined it had to be environmental. She is so concerned about this issue she wrote a book called "Green goes with everything." It has great information on making our homes safe. If you can't find a copy, I will be happy to loan you one.
Also, Shaklee is the absolute leader in safe, nontoxic cleaning and laundry products. Their products existed before the word biodegradeable. They are also the first company be declared climate neutral. All this to say, they are committed to providing the very best products. And they products are less expensive than others.
You can find the Get Clean line at http://www.shaklee.net/healthforlife
There are also supplements that help with asthma. Probably just using the Shaklee children's products would make a big difference. Please contact me if you have questions.
Hope this is helpful to you.

We put an air purifier in our son' bedroom and it helps him sleep with less sinus issues. We also use his inhaler as soon as he has a constant cough and take him to breath cold air.

As many of the moms suggested, keep working with your doctor to find the right meds that will help your child. It might take a few tries to get the right combination; people react differently to different meds. My daughter, now 13, was diagnosed with asthma when she was about 2. She also has allergies. Her asthma was triggerred by colds and had the coughing issue you describe. She now has very controlled asthma using advair inhaler and singulair pills (for younger child use another form of singulair). She also has an albuterol inhaler for the rare occassion she has an attack which are now pretty muh only triggerred by heavy exertion such as running. Also humidifier helps in house. Good luck - this will get better!

The answer to childhood asthma is very simple. "Nature". Yes nature can cure asthma by following the below blindfolded day in and day out. Your child will be out of asthma in no time.
Naturally occurring antioxidants and vitamins
Why?
Asthma is due to lack of vitamins and antioxidants. Strengthen the immune by loading your body with food high on antioxidants and vitamins.

Water
Why?
Asthma is triggered by drought in the body. Flood it with water.

Exercise
Why?
Weak lung is prone to frequent attack. Strengthen it with exercise.

Sunshine
Why?
Lack of vitamin D increases asthma risk. Get sunshine and fresh air.

Avoid
Artificial flavor, color, preservatives, soda, sugary juice, processed/overcooked food Pollution, mold, dustmite
Too much use of Hand sanitizer, antibacterial soap
Toxins, pesticides, detergents, cleaning products
Why?
Intake of anything artificial against nature increases asthma attacks. Avoid it.

Minimize allergens.

Asthma is caused due to inflammation of the tubes in the lungs. All the above listed steps have anti inflammatory effects. By following them everyday you can keep asthma at check.

I understand, my son was diagnosed at 3 months with asthma so I have been there. We did a lot of steam in the bathroom and it would help some but he always seemed to be coughing through the night. When they are little I always asked the Dr. (go to a pediatric Pulmunary specalist) to give you a prescription for a cough medicine with codine (it helps them sleep which will help him get his rest and heal faster) I have tried it with and without, with is alway with a speedy recovery. He is 11 now and still gets asthma attacks but not as often and not for as long - what really help is when we had his tonsils and adnoids taken out. Good luck, it is never easy but enjoy being able to hold him on your lap and comfort him - it's hard to do that when they are as big as you.

My 4 year old son has had asthma since he was 1. We have continued to do treatments with him throughout the years. He started out on the neb treatments and has now advanced up to the inhaler with a spacer. We had to experiment with the RX they used to get him to the point where he wasn't grunting or coughing constantly. He now take Flovent in the morn and Flovent and Albuterol at night both via inhaler. He is doing great with those. I recommend seeing a pulmonologist. They specialize in just this area and seem to be more aggressive with treatement. We see one at Riley Childrens hospital and love the progress we have made. You are your childs advocate and you have to make sure to firm. If your child is not acting right be persistant until you get some results. Good Luck! Asthma can be a scary thing when things go wrong!

my girlfriends daughter had severe issues, a 24 hour nurse and round the clock nebulizer treatments. After purging all her cleaning products and turning to safer products the nurse and the nebulizer went away as well. You will find that most of our children's issues are environmental. We are the only country that allows bleach to be sold, if you look at the back of clorox wipes you will see that after use area needs to be througly washed down with soap and water, who would do that?? Cascade is banned in several states. Laundry detergent that we use is filled with phosphates and other damaging ingredients. So his issue might be environmental? If you want to discuss more with me on the products that are out there, call me at ###-###-####

Hello, my 3 year old daughter was just diagnosed with Asthma last October. Whenever she would get a cold it would turn into coughing ALL night long also. We took her to an Allergist/Asthma Doctor (He is really good, if you need the name I can give it to you.) Since, she has been on proair two puffs twice daily. She has had a few colds AND only one time has she had the continuous coughing (which makes me think that the proair does work). When this happened we had to give her albuterol for awhile and two more puffs of proair and the coughing stopped.

I know how fustrating it can be. Before she was diagnosed, she would be up nights of just coughing. Hang in there. I hope this helped.

I hope everything gets better.

Try asking your dr for prescription for singulair it helps with allergies and athsma and it really helped my daughter out too who had the dry cough for a very long time following a cold. Fortunatly this is the first year that it hasn't happened since she was very little.
