Hello I know I knew this before and I can't remember for the life of me. My daughter wants to take cut up apples to school for lunch but I don't want them to turn brown. What do you put on them so they don't. Thanks N.

Lemon juice, lime juice or orange juice. Any citric acid. "All Fruit" is a powder citric acid that you mix with water and use as needed. Hope that helps!

I cut mine with an apple cutter - the kind that cuts out the core and into slices. I leave it all together, core too, and wrap in tightly in plastic wrap. Seems to work pretty good as my kids haven't complained and frequently ask for an apple in their lunch.

Dip them in a little lemon juice. I do that when I cut apple for my kids lunches........I get them ready the night before and in the morning the apples are fine like they were freshly cut.

N.,

I've tried the lemon juice thing and my kids won't eat it because of the sour taste, so I slice them with my apple corer/slicer from the top, but don't cut all the way through the bottom, pull the slicer back up and send the whole apple in a baggie, the air doesn't get to them and there's no citrus taste. Hope this helps!

I usually use lemon juice.

Apples are one of the fruits with extremely high pesticide levels, they're on the "dirty dozen" list of fruits and veggies that you should *always* buy organic.

I believe that you can use pineapple juice, The acid in the juice will keep the apples from turning brown. You can also use lemon juice, but that meks the apples very tangy.

Well, it looks like you got alot of responses!!!! I am a chef, and lemon juice is what everyone says to use, but it could really affect the taste of your apples. The ONLY juice to use is pineapple. Mix one part pineapple juice to 3 parts water soak them for no longer than 10 mins. Dry them for a few mins. on a paper towel, and your apples will not brown.

Dip them in lemon juice, pineapple juice or lemon-lime soda (the last one has the least amt. of taste).

Hi N.,
If you soak the apple slices in cream soda they won't brown and will taste like caramel apples.

pretty much any citrus juice will work. I just was told that pineapple juice works well because it gives the apples a nice flavor. Sometimes lemon juice gives the apples an odd flavor.
Good luck.

Hi N.,
I believe that you can dunk the apple slices in 7-UP or club soda, or use a little lemon water- the citric acid should prevent browning of the fruit. It is great that you are packing a healthy lunch for your daughter. ;-)

Go with natural lemon juice or have her take a different fruit encased in skin and save the apple slices for home at snack time. Using any preservatives is scary to me, personally as I prefer natural myself. I feel soda just adds more sugar even if it is a small amount. If you soak them, it does get absorbed.

A little lemon juice squirted over the apple slices will prevent them from turning brown and it really won't affect the flavor of the apples!

Hi N.---I had a friend who sprinkled the apple slices with cinnamon and sugar, if she likes that. It doesn't take much sugar at all, and the cinnamon is very healhy. Depending on how much she likes cinnamon, you could use only that. I don't usually recommend adding sugar to foods, but sometimes it is helpful (to keep the apples from browning) and can be considered a treat. I put the cut apples in a ziploc sandwich bag and the cinnamon and sugar, close the bag and shake to cover the apple slices.

For this I use organic sugar but you might be able to use succanat. Succanat is minimally processed and contains useful minerals, when sugar is needed.

Enjoy. D.

I always use pineapple juice to keep my apples white. Its sweeter than lemon juice, so no hint of sour taste on the apples. Another added plus the kids love to drink it after I am done dipping apples in it!

To keep apples from turning brown, I know of 3 options. Fruit Fresh is a name brand of a fruit preservative, that you sprinkle on the fruit. You can find it in the 'canning' area of your grocery store. You can also rinse the cut apples in lemon juice, not a lot, just so they are lightly coated. It can be bottled lemon juice. The last way and the one I use the most is to give it a quick rinse in any type of lemon-lime soda (7-up, squirt, sprite etc). It also keeps them from browning and gives the apples a sweet/tart flavor.

Good Luck!!

Powdered vitiman C. Mix it with some water and dip the fruit in it...it even works with bananas. And it doesn't leave a taste behind like you get dipping in juices. You can get it at any healthfood store, or GNC. It can be a bit pricy, around $15- $18, but it lasts for a couple years.
