Anyones Children Still Experiencing Reflux as a Toddler?

My son is almost 4 and am thinking he may still have issues with Reflux. Something wakes him up STILL every night, more than once. He was on medication for reflux when he was an infant, and am just wondering if anyone has a child who has had this in 2- 4 years of age, if they are on medication or what is working for you. Thanks!

What can I do next?

K.,

My 2 yr old still has problems sometimes. Nights can be the worst...my reflux creeps up most often then, too; it is the laying flat. We prop Marcus up with a pillow to a half reclined position; he will eat a tums earlier in the day or evening if he is showing symptoms. Otherwise, we still use the anti-gas drops (he only reacts to a double dose now).

During the day if he gets too rambuncious he will start coughing and sometimes throw up...when I notice this starting I ask him to take a sip of water (out of a cup for no sucking in extra air). The few minutes quiet to take a drink or two seem to do the trick.

Our doctor says not to worry as long as he is growing and gaining weight normally. We are monitoring him, and will keep doing so in the hopes that he outgrows this...but with my reflux, I am not having high hopes!!

Good luck,
T.

My little ones's reflux always went away by their first birthday so I can't really help in that respect, but i thought I'd mention something that might help. I don't know if you've ever heard of wearing a hazelwood necklace to help with reflux...
My friend's son had BAD reflux and was on meds for it (as a newborn). Her mom told her about these necklaces so she gave it a try. She says it basically took away his painful reflux. She was able to take him off meds after 2 weeks of him wearing it.
Anyway, she told me about them because my daughter has had eczema since she was 3 months and nothing was really helping (these necklaces help with a variety of issues from teething pain, to eczema, to reflux). Since she has been wearing it (about 6 months now) she hardly has any breakouts at all. Supposedly they work by absorbing excess acid in the body (the wood has that natural property).
Anyway, you can find them at www.hazelaid.com
They're really cute too & safe for babies to wear because the clasp is made special.
Hope it helps.

To answer your question . . . yes it could still be reflux. My daughter is 6 and was recently diagnosed. Since she is older and can communicate, we are talking about her symptons (chest pain & upset tummy) and addressing them as they come. We haven't found the source yet.

I was talking to some friends about this and multiple have been dealing with reflux for a while. They found medication to be very helpful except in one case that caused headaches. Kids that didn't eat now eat and are gaining weight & growing.

My daughter isn't underweight or small but is a very picky eatter. We now think it's because she wants what doesn't cause the reflux.

From my understand of meds. I would rather tread the problem with something natural then meds. because meds address symptoms rather than the problem and can have long term affects. Would you be open to some information that would educate what could address the issue?

I agree with Wendi...avoid meds again if at all possible. I took my daughter (at 2 months of age) to receive cranio sacral therapy. It really did the trick and it was her body correcting the problem...no drugs involved. I have a great therapist I can recommend as well as a woman who offers free monthly clinics in the PDX area.

My neice who is 8 was just diagnosed with reflux and nobody knew about it. It was actually her dentist who discovered the enamel was being worn from her teeth from the acid. She now is on medication that she will take the rest of her life. I would talk to your pediatrition and possibly your dentist to see if this could be your son's problem.

Hi K., Have you ever thought that your son may be lactose intolorant and not have reflux at all?? Doctors automatically prescribe you refux meds when you tell them someething is wrong, such as my pediatrican did and I wasn't satisfied with that answer so I did my own research.. Lactose intolerant is very common and people for so many years would just say their child is colicky when in reality they were in pain because their bodies couldn't break down the lactose and it gives them horrible cramps.. Does your son have a lot of dairy close to night time?? It's just a suggestion/ My son is only 20 months but I still give him lactose free formula although he can eat ice cream, yogurt, milk, etc. and have no problem now, I just don't give him too much of it and it's fine.. Soy never worked for us either, but never tried rice milk and they sell lactose free milk... you never know and it doesn't hurt to try it.... Good Luck!!!
