I think I found independent maternity coverage through Blue Cross Blue shield, but it's super expensive. It was the only one I found, I am not pregnant so we went through another company.

Unless things have changed, it's not available in Texas. At one time you could get it, but it was expensive and you had to wait one year before getting pregnant. When you crunched the numbers, it was a horrible deal. Three years ago, I looked into it again and I was told by several agencies, that private maternity coverage is not offered in Texas.

Many hospitals and doctors will work with you, if you are self pay. Basically, they give you the insurance discount. We considered self pay too. But since I had some issues in my first pregnancy, we felt like that was too big of a risk for us. I was added to my hubby's insurance during the enrollment period and then got back off at the end of the year. Group plans do not consider pregnancy to be a preexisting condition and cover it, even if you are pregnant when you sign up.

No, it's not typically available in Texas. Your best deal may be a job with insurance (even if you quit and have to pay COBRA premiums) or paying out of pocket. Homebirths are popular in Texas, and that's one of the reasons- midwives in this area charge around 3K for all prenatal care, birth, and follow-up care.

Check with a local Aflac rep. But as with other insurance, you can't get pregnant within 10 months of issue. Good luck.

You can find it but it will cost you as much as paying out of pocket for everything. If you are in a group, like employers, you are pooled with the other people and the chances of all of you getting pregnant, especially George down the hall, are slim to none. So each person pays a bit of the risk of the group that could potentially become pregnant.

When you go out and ask for maternity coverage you are saying I am going to have a kid, ya know? You are paying for all your risk of getting pregnant, which is high. So the rates tend to include what their cost will be when you get pregnant. That is why it is so hard to find, no one wants it.

are you asking about $$ for time off after delivery? i had aflac for maternity leave ( it may have been called something else but was designed for maternity leave) with my 2nd child, have to buy it prepregnancy. thought it would pay for 2 months of leave. well the dr has to say that it is medically necessary for you to be off work. one month post delivery yes it is medically necessary but 2nd month really isnt in the eyes of drs and insurance companies. i think i broke even on premium vs what i was paid. also money came after i returned to work, i did all paperwork timely manner but they take 6-8 weeks to process.

You can't buy individual maternity insurance in Texas. If you could, it would be ridiculously expensive. Best bet is to take a job with insurance - Dollar Generals insurance is available immediately, no waiting preiod, even to part time employees. I think you have to work like 26 hrs a wk.

Or call the hospital and dr and start a prepayment plan. They will negotiate lower prices for you.

I'm not sure about TX, but no, I had never found anything like that... it was something that could be purchased in addition to my private insurance I was already paying for (at an extra $7,000/yr)! I ended up paying out of pocket for my prenatal and delivery costs and with a whole lot of fighting, they did finally give us some discounts (still, it is all so expensive!)... we pay $100/month until it is paid off, which will be years and years from now! They didn't want to agree to that, but we basically said "take it or leave it"... it's all we can do... they took it and we pay it and I still think it is an absolute shame that we have to pay out of pocket to have a baby when I pay to have private health insurance!! (Very very common with private health insurance...). But, if I had little/no money at all, the state would be paying for all my kids... I would have no idea about the amount of drain I was on the system. Don't get me started..... lol!

are you looking for medical coverage or short term disability coverage? The best way for both is through an employer.. does your job or your husbands job offer these programs? With short term disability if you are paying for the policy (vs your employer paying), it will most likely have a pre-existing condition limitation, so if you are pregnant now, its too late. A couple of states mandate short term disability benefits if you are employed - CA, NY, NY, RI, HI, PR.

I looked a couple of years ago in Kansas and Blue Cross Blue Shield offered it, but there was a 24 month waiting period before any coverage kicked in. And you still had to pay the inflated premiums while you waited!

Here in AZ, a plan like that is reasonable doesn't exist. Even in if you added it to a private policy, you would have a long waiting period & you would pay a large premium just for the coverage. You're better off working with the hospital for a pre-payment plan.
