I'm trying to find something to give my 9yo son along with his Strattera to help regulate his emotions.

What can I do next?

Did you call your pediatrician or psychologist/psychiatrist? I wouldn't do anything without checking with your son's doctor first.

We have requested a med change for our son. We met with his pediatrician (the one who actually prescribes his meds) and let her know our concerns. She will discuss our concerns with our son's psychologist and see what he recommends. It really is important for you to talk to your son's doctor(s) about this. I wouldn't mess around with this without talking to them.

Just from googling it it sounds like it is nothing more than fish oil or the omega type supplements. So get fish oil, see if it works. Our pediatrician said it helped his son, it didn't help mine.

We just asked our son's psychiatrist about this today. He said he wouldn't write a prescription for it stating that it was mostly to help depression. Hmmmmm . . . that's not what I read about it, but I'm not going to push it either. Our son has severe ADHD (and other diagnoses as well) and can no longer take any stimulants. I am going to bring it up one more time at his next visit and see what he says - can't hurt.

Is your son seeing someone for behavioral therapy? I ask because learning to deal with emotions is a huge developmental help when it comes to ADHD and related issues. It is not something you can simply medicate away or fix with a dietary supplement like Vayarin. If he isn't seeing a therapist to learn coping skills for his attention and emotional issues (in tandem with medication) then that is something you need to get started. The earlier the intervention, the better.

We've tried stimulants, but even low doses caused tics. Even when we've tried a higher dosage of Strattera, it seems to make things worse. He is more irritable. His grades are great and he's able to finish his work, but the impulse control, talking, etc. are still there at times. The Vayarin requires a prescription, so it would be thru his doctor and not on my own.

We have tried behavioral therapy, but just haven't found the right fit so far. All they've told him is that he has to control his emotions, but don't help him with doing that. We have another appointment with a therapist who works strickly with children and is not a family therapist.

Why is he on a non-stimulant? Those are usually last resort. Stimulants are the powerhouses in treating ADHD symptoms.

I used it for the past six months in lieu of stimulants. I think it has helped.
