I had a crown put on my back bottom tooth while I was pregnant last year and this tooth has not been normal since. I went to the dentist today and he is referring me to an endodontics specialist. My dentist thinks I may need a root canal and this is the last thing I want to do but if it will take away the pain in this tooth than I am all for it. However.... I haven't heard much good news about successful root canals and would like to know if any of you have had one and what was the outcome. Also, I have been battling head aches the past few months and am wondering if it is from the tooth problem I am having.

I had a root canal on an abcessed tooth. I haven't had any more pain or any other trouble with that tooth. I haven't heard of anyone whose root canal didn't help them with their tooth pain.

I had a similar issue a while ago and a simple remedy worked for me! I had a filling on top of an inflamed tooth that had not healed properly and it started hurting seriously and the dentist said I needed a $700 root canal treatment!
I told a friend who is a naturopath and she recommended crushing raw garlic unto cotton wool and packing the teeth with it so that the fresh garlic juice seeped slowly into the inflamed area of the tooth. She said raw garlic is antibacterial and antibiotic etc.
I was desperate and wanted to avoid the $700 bill and I did it! It stung a bit at first but 24-48hrs later relief came! 7-10 days later the inflammation and pain was gone! The stuff under my filling was cleansed and healed and I never needed a root canal! This was 3 year ago and I have never had any troubles with that tooth!
Give it a try! Save some money!

I've had 2 successful root canals. The first one,10-15 years ago, was done by my dentist in his office and took about 3 hours. I am a dental pain wuss, so he kept me well numbed and on laughing gas the whole time ;^). For the second one, about 5 years ago, he told me that progress had been madein endodontics that he sent me to a gentleman in LaGrange who was just wonderful and had me out in about 30 minutes! In both instances the pain afterward was about the same as having teeth filled. I had more jaw soreness the 1st time because of keeping my mouth open so long. I haven't had any trouble with either of them since.

I have had 2 root canals. The 1st about 15 years ago. It really wasn't painful. I just took Tylenol for it. The 2nd one relates a little more to you. It was about 12 years ago and I needed a root canal on a tooth that I already had a crown on. They were able to do the root canal through the crown and I didn't even have to replace the crown. My only pain was the discomfort in my jaw from the pushing and tugging during the procedure. It did not even compair to the pain and headaches before the procedure. I was fine within a few hours. Please go get it done...it is not that bad.
I've had 2 as well and both went well. The suffering was from the tooth pain and problem and the root canal was the relief!!!! The sooner you get in the better your headaches will be. Much luck and relief!
I work at a dental office and no root canal is ever a sure thing. The nerve can always go bad again if some bacteria lingers but it may be 5, 10, 20 yrs. The doctor i work with is very skilled and many patients have come out with a pleasant experience saying "not bad at all, better than i expected". And as for the headaches it is definitley a possibility. If you feel throbbing, sharp shooting pain that is a definite indicator of a nerve issue. Just remember its best to keep your own tooth as long as you can.
My sister referred me to a dentist she had a root canal by over on Barrett Pkwy at Dent 1st he has since moved a bit away to another location but to me it's all the dentist. I took the little bit of a drive and he is so worth it. His name Dr. Poole at ###-###-#### he's great. I have not had dental care in 10 yrs because I was tried of duds for dentist. He has a great back ground and made sure I was in no pain during my root canal. I told him in advance I was sick of dentist that didn't care if you were in pain and kept going. He assured me he wouldn't do this and he didn't.
I'll never to anywhere else and he is the only dentist I will ever see.
I have had 5 root canals.
The only ones that weren't successful where the ones that I waited too long to get the crown put in because I was very pregnant when I got the canals then we moved etc.
Those teeth got pulled.
Root Canals are NOT fun but it's better than walking around with a painful mouth for forever and getting an infection and having it spread.
headaches could be related but it also could be the weather changes we've been having.

Hi T.. sorry to hear you are in so much pain. I am a dental hygienist and was an assistant for many years previous. I have never had a root canal my self but in my years of dentistry have rarely met a person who didnt have a successful rct. There have been some but its the exception. My boss speaks highly of a Dr Rosseau and Stewart, they are in dunwoody,ga. You really want to save your tooth if possible and if you find someone you are comfortable with you will be good to go. good luck : )
Sorry to hear about your pain. I had a tooth that just about killed me. The pain was so bad I couldn't concentrate on anything. It was so bad that I had to get a shot to numb it for a few hours so I could deal with the everyday stuff and make sure my kids were good to go. I finally had the root canal and I felt so much better. The pain was gone and life returned to normal. Listen to your dentist.
