Anyone Experienced with the ADD Medication Vyvanse?

Hello,
My oldest son is 8 years old and was diagnosed with mild ADD about two years ago. After about a year of trying different meds, we finally found something we were very happy with. Unfortunately, he's sort of "outgrown" it (and he's a skinny little guy, so we can no longer up the dose) and he's having a very hard time staying focused - at home and at school. I have heard great things about a fairly new medication called Vyvanse. But most of the info I find on it has been put out by the manufacturer, so of course, it's going to be positive. Our own pediatrician doesn't seem to know any more about it than I do (more on that some other time!). I was hoping someone out there could help me out. Do you have any experience with it? Is it as reliable as it claims to be? I'm thinking we might as well try it, since we're no longer getting the desired results from what we're currently using anymore. I'd love to hear from someone who has some first-hand information on it. Thanks for anything you have to offer!

What can I do next?

I have two boys with ADHD and we medicate. Sorry for those of you who disagree - I see lots of those responses - but it was the best choice for our family. We are going through the same thing - need a little tweaking. First was Adderall. My oldest lost too much weight so we switched him to Concerta. Loved it but needed something longer acting so we tried Daytrana. LOVED it but unfortunately the patch left my son with really itchy hips so back to Concerta. I am very interested in Vyvanse. I've heard great things about it. I know it is longer acting than most meds out there. Just make sure it is not in the same family of medications of what you are currently using. Check out www.additudemag.com. I recieve this magazine and they have a great website. You can get up to date information from professionals and other parents. You might find something there too. Good luck!

Hi, my kids are 1, 15, 12 and 8. Although we don't have an experience with Vyvanse, my oldest takes Metadate with is an extended release drug and we are very happy with it.

I know how worrisome it is to medicate kids and I would strongly suggest that you take your son to a psychiatrist regarding his ADD meds, and not just rely on your pediatrician. Psychiatrists are specifically trained to prescribe the kinds of drugs that our boys need and you will get a complete picture of all available meds from him/her.

If you would like to contact me via Mommasource, I'd be more than happy to give you the name and number of our wonderful pediatric psychiatrist!

Warm regards,
L.

I'm not experienced with the medication, but I did see an advertisement in the BayAreaParent magazine (December or January issue?)for a place in the bay area that helps children with ADD/ADHD. They focused more on teaching kids coping mechanisms, to give them the tools to become successful adults, not so much on the medication side. I wish I could remember what it was called, you might try googling or look up the electronic version of the magazine. Wish I could be more help. Good luck!

I am not experienced with that Med., but A while back a friend told me about Concerta. Her Son didn't have bad results with that, when it came to not eating, because he too was very skinny. My Dr. placed my son on it a couple of years ago, and I have been very happy with it. I only give it to him on school day's. We gave it to him when he woke up. When we started the Concerta, my Dr. wrote the office staff, requesting they give him his meds at lunch time. He had to remeber to go to the office and get it though. They do not tell anyone, so he doesn't have to get embarrased. By the time dinner rolled around, it is usually out of thier system. That way they still are hungry.
Once my son got older, we changed to a pill that was just in the morning, but still was the Concerta. It is still working good.
I hope this helps.

This is a medication I have NOT heard of.
I don't know where you are from? but I do know the best answers for that is to contact a child psychiatrist, for they are better now at the medications and how they effect children, better then a peditrician.
Talk to a doctor that specializes in children mental health.

My son was skinny and has the same condition, he was put on resperido for a period of time and now he has a weight problem.

There are a lot of good medications for this and lots of natural medications as well, for mild ADD.

Diet is a big one as well, as a simple cup of coffee.

My son is ADHD, and anxiety disorder. He is curently on a low dose of prozac and making sure he eats some healthy foods, and it helps.

beleive it or not removing toxins from you home makes a huge difference, like your cleaning products, all the chemicals stored in your home under your cabnets, bleaches, and phosphates, chemicals in their shampoos, and toothpaste
pestiside in the foods, hormones in their foods.
I have been transforming my home and removing all the chemicals and going gree and it has made a big noticible difference in my kids health.
I have a daughter with somatica which effects her body and causes seizures from her body being stresses and my son's ADHA have decreased because of the changes.
Chemicals are causing lots of effects on our children and our selves.
