Anyone Do Massage for Kids?

My daughter 8 year old has some back/neck pain and has seen an orthopedist, an osteopath and a chiropractor. The orthopedist at Children's was useless. The osteopath was good, but not covered by insurance and at $150 a pop, we simply couldn't afford to continue. The chiropractor seemes to work well and takes insurance, but I'm concerned about continued chiropractic for someone so young. I have similiar back problems (I'm sure she inherited them from me) and have found that regular massage and occasional chiropractic helps me manage it. I'd like to try massage for my daughter, but have not found anyone who will work on children. Any suggestions?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks to everyone for the ideas and offers of assistance about my daughter. I learned a number of things I didn't know about kids and massage, which makes it clear why there aren't tons of people out there doimg it. And it also strengthend my resolve that I'm on the right track. Thank you!

I would recommend going to the an Applied Kinesiologist - gentle chiropractic w/ pressure point manipulation (http://www.icakusa.com/what.php). I have been taking my son to a lady in PB for 6 months for a number of conditions, including reflux, neck problems and collitis. Her name is Dr. Magos - she is very gentle and my son wants her to hold him every time she enters the room...kids are really intuitive when it comes to what they want. Feel free to contact her: tel: ###-###-#### or me (____@____.com) if you have any questions.

Hello! My name is L. Caloh and I am a Licensed Massage Therapist and mom to a wonderful 2 year old. I do massage for children and adults on an outcall basis (in your home). When I massage children, I do require that a parent be in the room so that everyone's comfort levels are maintained.
If you'd like to contact me, you can call me at ###-###-#### and I can answer any questions you might have.
Thanks!

Also, if she is uncomfortable with acupuncture, there is also acupressure. When I was breastfeeding my daughter, she chose to only breastfeed on my left side. For the life of me, I couldn't get her to bf on the right! So I took her to a bf specialist lady and on my way to the "room" (duh duh duhhhh) we passed by this guy that was a baby chiropractor. He adjusted my daughters neck just in case that was the problem. Like maybe she had a crick in her neck and so he totally flipped my daughters neck around. It looked totally painful but she barely cried. So it is completely safe. They did it to my baby before she was a year old. I just wanted to tell you my story to maybe ease your worry. As long as the people know what they're doing. It's safe. :)

Any touch can be great for the body. However, you could take a few classes at a local school. They aren't terribly expensive at most schools. You'll be able to take care of your daughter, save a few dollars and have a little bonding time with her. Another option would be to get student massage from a student at a local massage school.

I would call the massage schools (i know there's one in PB but i can't remember the name) and ask what they suggest--they will likely have referrals for you--you could also try calling Pacific College of Oriental Medicine and ask to have her treated by an intern working with a supervisior who has treated kids (if she doesn't want to be treated with acupuncture they have other modalities for treating pain and will likely include massage; also it's less expensive to be treated at the school than through a private practitioner)--PCOM can probably also give you the name of the massage schools in the area.........hope this helps =)
