Any Tips to Increase Time in Between Feedings?

I am a first time mother and I have a 5 month old boy. He has been eating every 2 hours since I brought him home from the hospital. I've since started him on cereal, fruit and veggies, but he still can't get enough food. He's very tall and on the lean side - so it's not a case of me over feeding him. Any tips on ways to increase time in between feedings?

What can I do next?

Try putting the single grain rice cereal in his bottles if you use them. It worked great for us. about 1 tsp for every ounce. Hope this helps!

My daughter nursed every hour and a half until about 4 months and then spread it out to two hours. I was relieved when that happened. When her sleep (or lack thereof) was just totally killing me I would spend a day or two doing nothing but feed her. I would try to put her to breast every hour. That way she would get more in her tummy and it would increase my supply. It worked well for me. I did it several times over the course of her first year. Sure that day or two were rough but I just made sure I had plenty of fluids and movies lol. Even if it isn't for sleep you could try doing it to see if it would help boost your supply.

No advice, just wanted to say...hang in there. It sounds like you are doing it right. If he is lean and not overeating, he may have a small stomach or may feel full and bloated and not like the feeling of eating too much (for him). I know how I feel at Thanksgiving and that may be the feeling he is trying to avoid...Told you, no advice.

P.S. I miss feeding a baby, my 3 and 5 year olds want to "do it myself".

The only thing I ever did was add rice cereal in the bottle and it was by advise of my ped doctor who was a mother herself and did it with all 7 of her children...I know, I know so many are against it but so many are for it as well....all I can suggest or maybe feed him some cereal and a veggie or fruit like a snack before bed...all i have to offer and I have been there that's what helped us we have 3 kids...

Don't be in a rush.He is feeding like a 5 month old should and while the lack of sleep and stress of being a new mom may be taking it's toll you cannot rush the process. The feedings will be going to every 4 hours soon and sometimes it will seem like he's back tracking and eating every 2 hours again but there is no trick to getting a baby to eat less often. He is growing fast and needs those every 2 hour feedings and things like cereal or anything else isn't going to help much at all.And doctors rec. not putting cereal in the bottle. But just try and be patient and get sleep when you can like when the baby is napping.

Is he on the bottle? If so,Get one of those bottles that you can mix in a just a little cereal and give that between meals.I have no experience with breast feeding,so if he is on the breast, all I could say is put him back on the breast between your cereal and veggie feedings.Hope this helps.

My 3 year old was the exact same. Are you using jar food or are you making your own fruit, veggies and cereal? If you are using jar food that may be the problem. We made our own food for our three year by getting a food processor. We got frozen vegetables, steamed them and placed them in the food processor and seasoned to a better than bland taste. We fed him as much as he wanted in one sitting and didn't need to feed him again for another 4 hours.

hang in there. my daughter did the same thing and really still feeds very often during the day at 8 months. this is completely normal, please don't let the doctor or anyone else make you think he's not getting enough. you're giving him the best start in life. he also might be going through a growth spurt approaching 6 months. its a pretty major one and he has to tell your body to produce more milk if he needs it. my daughter gained a pound in one week during that time! i had a lot of support and help from La Leche League and also met other moms in the same situation. it helped me get though those rougher times. check www.llli.org to find your local support group. hope this helps!

I totally went through this! I breastfed during the day and gave formula with cereal at bedtime. My daughter in now 9 months. What I did at 5 months is that when she did get hungry like after an hour to two hours was give her water and/or kept her distracted with toys, music, etc. The water worked really well. I gradually worked on it to where I got to feeding her every 3 hrs(milk) and then by 7 months, every 4 hours(milk). I did start solids by 5 months with veggies for lunch (2 hours after milk) and then breakfast, lunch, & dinner by 7 months. It took me a long while and LOADS of patience for it to work, but it got better when she was 7 months. Yes we went through growth spurts where she cried constantly, but that's the ONLY time I gave into feeding her more often. Just hang in there!!! Hope this helps!

Hi M.,
Congrats on being a new mommy:) Your little boy is on track for his age. If your breast feeding, make sure your eating a healty and full diet. If so, he is getting everything he needs from you at this point. If on formula, then the same. I would hold off on the cereal until 6 months. It may seem to 'fill' him up a little longer but research has proved over and over that it leads to health problems as an adult, if not in childhood. The problems are heightened when the cereal is put in a bottle. Has he had any juice yet?? You can add an once to about 4 oz. of purified or spring water. This will give him a boost on eletrlytes but careful, many baby/kids juice contain artifical sweetners or high fructose corn syrup. Never get this kind, it will instantly spike his blood pressure and glucose levels. Other than that, something that will give you a little more time... Get one of those food strainers made for babies. I found mine at babies or us. It has a little handle with a net on it that doesnt allow big pieces to come through. Put a frest apple slice, banana chunk, ice cube, etc. in it and he will go crazy over it! It will also sooth his gums, which can help with teething. If you have no idea what i'm talking about, let me know and i"ll get you the exact name of the product:) Other than that, keep up the good work. Before you know it, your gonna miss these times! Best of luck!

If you are breastfeeding, it's normal. And the best thing to do is feed on demand, he won't overeat. If you are not breastfeeding, learn his cues for "all done". Whether it's turning his head or fussing, they vary from baby to baby. You're doing fine, just follow his lead at this age.
