Hi there, I have a 5.5 month old son who was put on nutramigen because of horrendous belly pain. We noticed immediate relief once we started him on it and I am so thankful. I was wondering if anyone else used this with there babies and if so, when did you try to wean them off it? did you ever try regular formula? He is now eating certain stage 1 baby foods without any issues and i have to wonder if he has outgrown his belly problems. Any advice would be great! Thanks!

So What Happened?

Thanks so much for all the advice! I was nervous that if i kept zoren on the nutramigen i would somehow create a dependency for it...all the responses really helped me out. I just did not know what the normal was..It is very expensive but you cannot put a price on a happy baby in my opinion. Thanks again!

I transitioned my daughter off of Nutramigen around 7 months. I switched her to Nestle Good Start which is similar to Nutramigen because the proteins are more broken down, but it's cheaper. I first gave her one bottle a day of Nestle and the others were Nutramigen. Then I switched to 2 bottles the next week. She did fine and I didn't notice any problems. She's now 10 months, and I'm doing the same slow process to switch her to a regular, stage 2 formula.

My middle son was on it from the age of 4 months till he was a year old because of colic and gas. I would recommend to keep him on it as long as possible. If you do start to wean back I would wait till he is almost a year old. Enjoy the peacefullness.

My daughter was on Nutramigen from 2 months until she was weaned onto cow's milk at a year. She was allergic to milk as an infant. The formula made such a difference in her. I would recommend to keep your child on it until the pedi says to take them off. You don't want to mess with a sensitive belly!

When my oldest was a baby she had reflux and was put onto this formula along with an acid reduction medicine. She was one it from about 3months up until 6 or 7 months. Most babies outgrow it about that time. The doctor will be able to tell you more about when it is a good time.
We started to mix the normal formula with the hypo-A one and that is how we weaned off.
Good luck

My son was on Nutramigen for 2 years because of cow milk allergy (he has now "grown out" of it). If the reason your son needs Nutramigen is milk allergy, then I definately would NOT wean him this early. Your pediatrician should be able to give you good advice. You might want to ask for a skin test for allergies before you make any decisions (very quick test that is virtually painless).
Good luck!

My 6.5 month old daughter had to be put on Nutramigen for a cow's milk protein allergy. If this is the reason your child was put on it, I suggest NOT trying to wean him off. Once you've seen the bloody diaper of a milk allergy, you enver want to see one again...trust me. I know it's expensive and there's no store barnd, but some insurance companies will cover the cost, so you should check out that option. Good luck!

Hi there! DD2 was on nutramigen and DS is on it now. DD2 went on it at three weeks old. It was my understanding that she was to stay on it until she was a year old when I'd begin weaning onto cow's milk. At about ten and a half months and well after she was on solids (including yo baby yogurt) I asked her pediatrician if I could transition her over to regular formula. Because she was having absolutely no other issues and she was fine with the yogurt, she okayed it. DD2 was fine with regular formula and transitioned to cow's milk at a year without issues. I plan on doing the same with DS assuming that he's fine in every way and that the doc okay's it. The stuff is so outrageously expensive but a few moms here did suggest that I get a doc's note that it's medically necessary - insurance may cover the cost. Also, I've begun looking on line for it cheaper and found a medical supplay place that has it for about a third the cost. I've got to research it but if it's legit - I'm there! Good luck! Oh - if you haven't noticed it already, that formula is very different than reg. formula going in and let me tell you, it's very different coming back out!!! EUGH! :)

Hi K., My son (who is almost 5 mths) was on Nutramigen for a few months but it was very expensive. His pedi switched him to Enfamil Geltlease and it has worked great. I'm not sure why your son is on it but I think it would be worth the time to ask your pedi if it would work. Also, my son has to see a gastro doc for his belly issues and he wanted me to tell my insurance company that he had acid reflux, and then he could give me a prescription for it and the insurance did cover it. Good luck with everything, I feel your pain....

I have had two nephews on it. They both stayed on it until they were 1 year old but went to regular whole milk just fine. You can ask your peditrician for his/her opinion. I myself would stick with what is working. If it is the ex$pen$e of it sometimes you canget a perscrition for itand have it filled at a pharmacy and your insurance will pay for it. WIC might be able to hel you as well

Hi. My son was on Enfamil Nutramigen for about 6 months. He had gas problems and what we thought was normal spit up but one time we had to take him to the docs and he spit up (spitting up for him was huge amounts about 3-4 feet) and the n.p. asked if this was normal because we were so calm and we told her it was and she said he had acid reflux. He went on some medicine he had to take twice a day and after being on it for 3 months we weaned him off but kept him on Nutramigen for a little while and than by 8-9 months he went on Enfamil Lipil and was fine with it. I know Nutramigen is expensive but it worked wonders. Good luck with your son!! By the way, when we put our son on Nutramigen we also isntantly noticed relief. Another thing we did was give him gas drops at each bottle and that helped.

My youngest was put on Nutramigen for reflux and I remember how god aweful it smelled and how expensive it was! If it's working, you only have about 4 more months before his doc will tell you to switch to real milk or soy milk, so I'd just stick with it. When it comes to babies, I say don't mess with a good thing, if they're happy, we're happy! Good luck!

I have had three babies on either Alimentum or Nutramigen. My first two were on it for the full year, my third is 5 months old, and I'm guessing he'll be on it for the full first year as well. You can try weaning whenever you want - each baby is different. Just make sure when you do it, you do it gradually, like 1/3 new formula, 2/3 Nutramigen for the first week, then 1/2 and 1/2, then 2/3 new and 1/3 Nutramigen, etc... Good luck! I tried Enfamil A/R when my youngest was about 2 months old, and halfway through his first mixed bottle of Nutramigen and new, he was screaming in pain.

Hello,

My son (now 6 yrs old) was switched to Nutramigen when he was small due to his SEVERE colic. It worked wonders! I kept him on that until he was off the bottle (at 1 yr old) - we switched him to whole milk & he HATED IT - but our dr. said water & juices are fine as long as he's getting his vitamin d from other sources (which he was) and eventually when he turned about 3 he'd finally drink milk & loves it now at 6.

If I were you, again only just my opinion, I'd keep him on it until you're ready to get him off bottles all together. We took bottles away by 1 yr old. and with the bottles went the formula. Definitely don't switch back anytime soon - the special formula is working - continue to use it!

My son ate all his baby food (stage 1 & 2) while on the formula & had no problems at all what-so-ever. The formula is just easier to digest for babies, so it won't get all 'chemistry set' on your son when adding food to his diet.

Good luck and best wishes
from another SAHM of 2 boys (6 & 3.5 yr old)

K., my now 10 year old daughter (whom was my first) was put on Nutramigen as early as 3mos old. I was unable to stick with breast feeding for a number of reasons I won't detail here. I remember it being expensive 10 years ago, I'm afraid to know what the price is now. But I started putting my daughter on 2% milk when she started taking solid foods. I would mix a little powdered rice in to make it more formula textured (a suggestion my doctor gave me) She did fine and was off the "Champagne of Formulas" by her 1st birthday.(Cha-ching!!) The Pediatrician also recomended the 2% milk as opposed to the whole milk because there is a lot of unnecessary fat content. Children develope all the fat cells there bodies will contain thoughout their life, in the first 2 years. So keeping fat content low in that develpemental stage is critical. It will decrease the risk of obesiety later in life. Hope this helps.

Hi, My son was put on Nutramigen for severe reflux, it also worked wonders. We kept him on it until we switched him to milk at 1 yo. He currently is on Lactaid becuause they believe the reflux was aggrivated by the lactose intolerance. If you didn't already know, some insurances will cover it if your dr. can finagle the diagnosis, it is really expensive so our dr was able to help us out with it. That helped tremendously with the cost! Hope this has helped. BTW my son is now 2.5 and doing great with his reflux under control with meds.

I have had two children that were put on nutramigen at young ages as well. Yes, both of my kids now ages 3 & 4 were able to transition well off of nutramigen. I did it gradually and not until 10-12 months of age b/c of the degree of problems they were having with their digestion. What is going on with your 5.5 month old in terms of digestion? Was there blood in the stool or an allergy?
Nutramigen is a lifesaver in my opinion, despite its expense!

Hi, our first child did well with a much lower priced soy formula but our daughter was put on nutramigen when she was two months old due to stomach issues. We called it "liquid gold". But since it worked complete magic we never tried another formula but that. Nutramigen kept her tummy so calm and she was so much happier. We weaned her off of it at one year and on to regular milk with not a single problem. It was amazing.
