Yes, I went through the same thing with my son at that age, (now 14). By age three he had grinded his teeth down to near stubs. When I took him to the dentist she said that his top and bottom teeth weren't lining up and that was causing the grinding. She placed an appliance on the roof of his mouth which widened his upper bite. In less than 6 months the problem was solved and he didn't need to wear it any longer. I was told at the time that using the appliance may cause him to have a slight overbite later in life, which it did, but hardly noticeable. He wore braces at age 12-14 to fix that, and it did. All is well. I hope this helps.

I have a 7 1/2 year old daughter who has grinded her teeth since she was atleast the age of your son. I read somewhere online that the kiddoes usually out grow doing this by the time they are 7ish like my daughter. I would love any tips on this also. I think stress is a BIG issue with this. My daughter has had a lot of deaths in her little life and 2 of them were her Great Gma and Grandma that she was REALLY close to. I know it is tough, a snoring husband is one thing but hearing your little one grinding their teeth down is just plain tough.

My son, now 21 months, used to grind his teeth constantly in his sleep and it would actually wake me up at night. He has stopped and doesn't do it anymore. I'm sure your son will too. You just have to let them do it on their own. I tried everything I could think of to make my son stop and nothing helped.

Hi I have a son that used to grind his teeth while slleeping. When it was time for his regualr dentist check-up the dentist told me it could be from lots of things. It could be stress, school or something that he was nervous about. I had to buy a mouth guard for him to sleep in at night because he grind his teeth so much it was possible that he could've grinded them down to his gums. When his baby teeth started coming out you could tell he was grinding because it wasn't much of a tooth and these were only his jaw teeth. He has grwon out of if now nd does not have to wear the mouth guard anymore. hope this helps a little..

You can take him to a pediatric dentist but more than likely they will not do anything. It is normal as they are loosing and getting their permenant teeth. He is too young for a nightguard as I have been told by the dentist. So basically you will just have to live through it. My daughter is 8 and still grinds her teeth. Until all her teeth are replaced with permenant they will not do anything. My daughter goes through times where she grinds more and sometimes less. Sorry but this is what I have been told by her pediatric dentist. You can also google teeth grinding and find out more about it.

My 5yr old daughter grinds here teeth at night so loud that I could hear it from my bedroom(doors opened, of course). I spoke with her dentist about the grinding and his response was, "it is cause by stress". But at this age it not a big issue due to the fact that their molars are not in place. Once the molars have surfaced that is when we need to really be concerned. I hope this helps shed some light. If anyone has heard anything different, please let me know. Thanks

I am a mother of 3 boys and a dental hygienist. I have a lot of parents asking this same question. Don't worry about it, they will outgrow it. There is nothing you can do because you can't have them wear a mouthguard like adults do because their mouths are constantly changing. Some kids wear their teeth down alot but usually outgrow it by the time they get their permanet teeth in.

I read online that it is caused by a parasite, nothing to be alarmed by, you know 2 years put anything and everything in their mouths. The best way to get rid of it is to clean out his system, for example with a mild childrens laxative maybe once a week. It will take a few weeks to clear up. You can also try foods that help push the digestive system along, for ex bananas or cheese would make one of my daughters have a bowel movement if she was constipated. You could also give him prunes and/or prune juice. Good Luck. (p.s. keep in mind that the grinding will cause him to wake up with a headache and soreness around the cheeks/jaw so give him a light facial massage, that will help soothe him, Its always best to try home remedies before trying medications) Hope all works out.

I grind my teeth and so does my daughter (now 11). The dentist said not to worry about it when she was little, since her permanant teeth coming in may change the alignment of her teeth and remedy the grinding. However that was not the case for her and she continues to grind. She's been to the orthodontist and has been told (along with me) that we grind our teeth because of how our teeth are aligned one on top of the other. At night the body is trying to find a "comfortable" resting spot and since our teeth do not rest in the "normal" position, we constantly grind to "find" that spot". Ours in only correctable with braces/surgery, but that may not be the case for your daughter, so wait until her permanant teeth come in and see what happens; it may correct itself if it's happening because of her teeth alignment.

My daughter grinds her teeth to at night and I took her to the dentist and she said it was normal. When kids grind their teeth they can grow out of it and if they don't grow out of it then it's still okay too. It's not hurting their teeth at all so it's really nothing to worry about.I know it frustrates you cause it frustrates me especially when she's in the same room with me.Good luck

Go see your dentist. They have a plastic appliance your child wears at night that fits over the bottom teeth. At least that is what I wear now that I found out I clench and grind my teeth at night. If you don't get them something to bite on it can cause TMJ and headaches and it can wear down the teeth.

My son used to grind his teeth when he was real young also. He't almost nine now, and he doesn't do it anymore. Once their baby teeth start to fall out and their adult teeth come in, it makes it harder for them to do it because the teeth don't line up and are different sizes. That seems to be when he stopped doing it. Not to say it won't return. I'm a teeth clencher and my husband grinds also...so who knows!

yes both of my kids would grind their teeth at night. They wound up with such little teeth I thought they were almost to the nerves. I took them to the dentist and he said not to worry about it because they were just baby teeth. He advised me to watch when they started to get the adult teeth and if they still did it we could look into a mouth guard for them to wear at night. Well I took that advise early and attempted a mouth guard on my yougest child but he would not keep it in his mouth at night. My oldest has now gotten most of his adult teeth and he has seemed to have out grown it. I don't know if it is a phase that they go through but at such an early age there is really nothing you can do other than get a mouth piece and see if your son will keep it in his mouth at night. I hope this helps.

I know this sounds weird, but children do grind their teeth when they have worms. One easy way to find out if this is something your son has is to put a piece of tape over his rectum when you put him to bed at night. The worms come out at night and will be on the tape the next morning. If he has worms, it is easily treatable.

I just found out from my pediatric dentist that my 9 year old grinds her teeth at night and has actually worn away most of the enamel (on her baby teeth, thank goodness). They fitted her for a mouth guard that she wears at night (in designer colors, no less). It doesn't stop the grinding but it stops the erosion of the teeth and the associated tooth pain.

We went to the pediatric dentist earlier this week for checkups and I asked him about this. One of my 3 year old twins grinds her teeth occasionally at night. He said it's very common and not to be concerned. It's something they do as a replacement for pacifiers or thumb sucking. He guessed about 50% of toddlers do it. He added that if she's still doing it in high school, then it will be a problem, but for now not to be concerned at all.

My 5 yr. old son grinds his teeth at night as well. We never noticed it until we slept in the same room with him when we were out of town staying in a hotel. I asked my dentist and they said that alot of children do this and many out grow it. I just hope mine does! I for one, never out grew it and still grind my teeth at night. I have to wear a night guard to keep from grinding my teeth down.

My almost 10 year old has ground his teeth since he was little. Our dentist does not recommend a night guard while they still have baby teeth. We did have to rebuild a tooth because it was in danger of having nerve exposure. My 16 month old son also grinds his teeth, but usually only when new teeth are coming in. My understanding is that kids are much less likely to grind their teeth because of stress than adults.

A., I am a dental hygienest and it is perfectly normal for kids to grind their teeth. The baby teeth are loosening up to make way for the permanent ones and this is the way that process begins. Most kids will grind until all of their baby teeth are gone around (12 -13 yrs old). Kids also will grind if they are stressed just like adults or if they are on some kind of ADD meds. Most likely this will fade away. I know it sounds horrible but it is ok!

Hi A.!

My name is T. and I work at a Dentist office. Most children grind their teeth and it is really nothing to worry about. At this age there isn't much to do besides bring it to their attention (if it happens during the day of course) so they can control it. Otherwise he will more than likely grow out of it. Just make sure to take him for his bi-annually dental check ups and you'll be fine.
