I have a 3 yo daughter that at birth was 8 lbs 10 oz when she was born and I did both nursing and formula. I have startedher at the age of 4 mos on cereal and it seemed that she was not getting enough so at 5 months i started to give her baby food in small quantities and then at 10 months old i started her on whole milk and deluted it with some water.
At 8 and 10 mos old she had feberal seizures due to having the first one was b/c of viral infection and the second b/c f a UTI. then she had to go and see a urologist and then goes for a yrly ck up and she might have to go to and have surgery for the flap between her kidneys and bladder are not fully formed. so i have to give her medication every night at bed time nad I think that this is the cause of this overweight. I have to go and see the urologist next month and take it from there.
So time has gone on that she has been overweight and she is also having problems with keeping her occupied and sleeping at night. She takes a nap for about 2 hrs or less and goes to bed about 10 pm and she gets up at all different times the hrs range from 3 am to 4 am.
Is there anybody out there that is having the same problem or any advise that you can give me? Thank you in advance.

What can I do next?

Have you considered a really top notch liquid supplement to give her the excellent nutrition she needs without all those calories? Sometimes they are eating because they are craving a particular nutrient. It can also help "hold" her through the night. I'd be happy to share more and let you talk to other moms whose kids have dealt with illness & meds, to see what a difference the right product can make. There is hope out there!

Hi M.,

I have a 2 1/2yr old that is a bit big, and a 5 yr old that is a bit skinny. My big yr old was also born big, and my 5 yr old was born really small too, so they have been pretty constant in size (girth) since birth. I will say this, though: as parents, we are responsible for what, and how much we feed our kids. I don't want to be rude,I'd just like to express my opinion...I think you started your daughter too early on baby foods, and then on whole milk. The baby foods, and whole milk, though healthy, I'm sure had a part in your daughter's size, having given it to her at an age when her body was still not ready for it, and giving her a lot of it, on top of it, especially if she has always been big, not just since she began taking the meds.

As for the sleeping, she may be over tired from staying up so late, which instead of making her extra sleepy, it makes her sleep wrestless. My 2 1/2yr old also only naps 2-3 hrs, but goes to bed at 8 and doesn't wake until 7. Toddlers and school-age kids should be in bed between 730 and 9, and stick to that schedule.

Lastly, she needs to have routine daily exercise. I know the weather is pretty awful to be outside, but there are indoor activity places you can take her to so she can have it out. If you can't do that, spend a little extra time to move your furniture around, and let her run in an open space you create. Dance with her, have her try to follow you on exercises, etc..

Sincerely, M., I mean no disrespect. I worry about my big kid too, but right now, she's bordering on being over-weight, not quite there. I'm thankful that she's so tall, and solid, though, because she does weigh as much as my 5 yr old, but isn't exactly pudgy. I wish you good luck, and your daughter good health wishes when she goes to see the urologist next month.

Mari

This might not make a huge impact but my pediatrician said that 2% milk was fine for my 1 year old, he is not overweight but he said to skip the whole milk. Best of luck, nat

Watch carefully what the sweet girl is eating, try to have her drink mostly water - except for the times milk is appropriate and try to get her to drink the Nutrish milk... it is much better for her :o) At this age it is hard to adjust their weight, so you also want to make sure she is physically active. Good luck!!

What type of med's is she on? My daughter had surgery at 1 1/2 years to correct problems with her ureters/kidneys. She took antibiotics for years preventatively so she would not get UTI's. She is now 4 years old and has not had one UTI (thank God). I would recommend the doctors at Children's Hospital in Boston to anyone with similar problems.... They should be able to counsel you about her weight as well. Good luck!

What medication is she on? It would help to know as far as what the side effects could possibly be.
