Another Potty Training Question - Schaumburg,IL

Hello Mamas! So first a little bragging (I'm very proud today)- my 2.5 yo daughter went on the potty today for the first time. She asked to go potty and went on the big girl potty with no ring or anything (she said no little potty and no to the ring). She peed a little bit wiped herself and then flushed all with no prodding. And then ran around the house laughing and yelling "Elli big girl potty!" I'm making it a big deal with her (we're having a special dinner tonight to celebrate- all dishes chosen by El- mac n cheese with hot dogs and cupcakes with pink milk and we bought pretty girl pull ups) so she'll stay excited about it and hopefully that will make her want to go again.
So now my questions- how often do I take her to sit on the potty? Every half hour, every hour, should we just move into the bathroom? For how long (a week, a month, until she's 5 (kidding)?) Or do I wait until she tells me she wants to go? Once we're on the potty how long does she sit? I mean she's not going to go every time we sit on the potty right? So should we sit for like 15 minutes or longer? Should I have her just in pull ups or should she be in diapers sometimes too? This is all new territory to me... How do I do this? Every time I think I know what I'm doing with this Mom stuff... something new comes up that I have no idea about. LOL

What can I do next?

How exciting!!!! That sure makes for a good day...though be prepared the process MAY take a little while depending on the child.
For how often, it depends on the child so usually somewhere in the 30-60 minute range, right now I'm doing every 45 minutes or so with a 22 month old for her to keep it dry. Could set the timer between potty times if you want a reminder. How long you do this REALLY depends on the child...just continue to keep it positive encouraging her but not pushing her. We use Yogos as a potty treat right now to keep up the motivation though the 22 month old has been going on the potty since 19 months so she doesn't really need the Yogo so just has one once in a while instead of every time. One who is 3 years old gets one every time and it's a somewhat quicker process because he's a little older it seems. Just one little Yogo goes a long way in encouraging them! :) I wouldn't wait until she tells you at her age since it is a whole new sensation to get used to between being interupted from play for a feeling of needing to go and getting there in time to go on the potty. I'd start with giving the reminders and her telling you she needs to go usually comes on it's own relatively soon after she gets the hang of it all. For how long to sit, as long as she wants to or until she goes whichever comes sooner...you can try to encourage the time to lengthen by reading books to her, singing songs, playing little hand games like pat a cake, etc. We allowed my older son juice on the potty (only time he ever got juice in the beginning) and that held his attention sitting on the potty as well as gave him ammunition to go. As far as pull-ups go, they are simply for your convenience, not a tool to actually aid the training, is how I see it. They are simply easier to pull up and down when you are not REPLACING the diaper every time you take it off/pull it down. Diapers hold more, so we just now went to pull-ups at night as my older son (now 3.5) is not soaking his diaper at night anymore, yet he potty trained soon after he turned 2 for during the day. So, I'd continue to use diapers during the night just because they hold more. We continued using the pull-ups with my older son (and are doing so with the others in training) until after he was trusted to keep dry particularly when we were out...mostly for ease and also because feeling wet doesn't bother them near as much as the mess bothers me, so it just wasn't worth it to me to try to train that way. :) Hope this helps and best wishes to you!!

I can't take credit for this totally, BUT i noticed you said you bought her pull-ups. When we were potty training my son we did the same thing. My mom watches my boys while I'm at work and one day she just put regular underwear (thick ones in case there was an accident) on him, and he told her everytime he had to go. He's been potty trained ever since. He was also 2.5. Also my son will NOT go if we ask him, he has to tell us!

Congrats! Sounds like you're off to a great start. My only advice is regarding your question of how long to have her on the potty...NO MORE than 10 minutes (or less depending on what she's comfortable with). After 10 minutes it can actually become painful for them, thus creating a potentially negative association.

Good luck and nice going on letting her take the lead :-)

Dear A.,

I am glad to hear that Eli is excited about the potty. I used pull ups once she acted like it was a diaper so I won't use them any more. I went out and got her big girl underwear, they have the ones with extra padding. I also bought the plastic covers for them to help. My daughter is potty trained with a few accidents here and there. I put Makayla on the potty about every hour and only for about 5 min. Good Luck
