anJFF: Questionable Pre-school Song

JFF - I am curious to see how you would feel about the song my son recently learned at pre-school. He is 3.5 years old.

"The pig in the field goes oink.
The pig in the field goes oink.
Then the farmer comes and hits him on the head, and thats how we get hot dogs".

I personally am not offended by this, I thought it was kind of funny, but some friends and family members were horrified when they heard the song and could not believe he learned it from his teacher at pre-school. BTW - Its a fairly high end preschool, and I absolutely love love love his preschool teacher, she is totally fabulous and I have no worries at all that there is anything wierd going on with her... I think it is probably just not the greatest of choices, as someone in the school is likely to be offended judging by the responses I have heard from friends and family. My son just thinks is a silly song, he has no concept of how most food is made and I dont plan on discussing it anytime soon.

So, would you be offended, or do you think its harmless fun?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

LOL, good answers from everyone. Glad to know that most are not offended!! Agreed that some folks take things WAY too seriously. I think someone here said they would have been shocked... and I think that is probably the reaction I have been seeing and I called it offended but maybe it is more shocked.

He also learned this one at school:
"The chicken in the field goes cluck
The chicken in the field goes cluck
Then the farmer comes and chops off his head and thats how we get chicken wings"

I like that one even more because he does little chicken arm movements when he sings it :0)

That is how we get hot dogs... Its strange people dont want their kids to know where their food comes from, lol. Anyone that gets mad tell them to come on over and my daughter can sing them the diarea song.

It sounds like a song Phoebe from "Friends" would sing. There was an episode where she sings similar songs, and maybe the teacher remembered it.

I wouldn't sing it with my preschool group, but I may have a different teaching style, and I wouldn't get offended if my son brought it home. (Really, isn't getting "offended" such a lot of work for something so slight? ;)

Harmless fun! At that age they do not really understand it anyway. Hopefully though it will set the stage for them learning that food does not actually appear magically packaged on store shelves.

And really that is where most hot dogs come from :)

My favorite nursery rhyme is "Goosey Goosey Gander, where shall I wander, upstairs & downstairs & in the ladies' chamber. There I met an old man, who wouldn't say his prayers. I took him by the left leg, and threw him down the stairs."

There is so much effed up with that rhyme, but it's fun. Read through a mother goose book, so much of it is inappropriate!

Well, if a 3.5 yr old lived on a farm, they'd probably know this very well already. I find it to be a humorous way to introduce a teachable moment. Most of our kids are so disconnected from our food supply, if someone didn't teach them otherwise, they could probably live their whole lives thinking that hamburgers come from the ground, or from a factory.

I think it's pretty funny! And it's true after all. At least the bloody details were left out.
Nursery rhymes and songs are notoriously violent. Have you ever really paid attention to the words of Rock a Bye Baby? Yikes. And I believe Ring around the Rosie was written during the time of the Black Plague (ashes, ashes, we all fall down) yes, fall down DEAD!

Wow, I can't believe anyone would be offended. Pigs are food for crying out loud. Vegans shouldn't even be offended. People eat meat. People have eaten meat since... forever. I don't even see where this is boarderline offensive.

i dont find it offensive. Ring around the rosies was about the black plague, its raining its pouring the man doesnt wake up because he died in his sleep due to the concussion from bumping his head. there was one my son was singing the alphabet that included a red gummy bear chasing him with a knife although this was taught by a classmate and not a teacher.

Notice that some states are passing laws requiring more emphasis on agriculture and the role it plays in the food chain and society and economics...etc.?

This is that.

The next generation is going to be very familiar with where a hamburger comes from.

Little Bunny Foo foo is what this song reminds me of. do you know that one? --L BFooFoo hopping throught the forest, scooping up the field mice and bopping them on the head.

I vote for harmless, However, i never liked to hear my kids sing
--One little two little three little indians, there are verses that go with it,
Jumped int the boat and the boat tiped over, repeat, swam to the shore and built a teepee, oowah oowah shoot that arrow etc.
That one seems racially insensitive and inaccurate to me.
