My 11 year old daughter went to the Dr. almost a month ago. She has not been ill for over 4 years (at least not ill enough to see a Dr.). Dr. said it was an upper respiratory thing and prescribed amoxycillin. 10 day script and 8 days into it she developed a full body "rash" reaction. Returned to Dr. and was told this was a typical amxy reaction. Prednisone and Singulairwere presecribed. 5 day dosage of prednisone. Day after the end of the prednisone rash flared back up (it had never truly gone away). Took daughter to urgent care clinic and was told that my daughters body was not metabolizing the amoxy. Prescribed higher dose longer run of Prednisone and changed to Zyrtec in place of Singulair. Visited regular Dr. at earliest possible time and was told that she may have Scarletina. Erythromyicin was prescribed. Prednisone meds were done on Thursday, 2 days later Saturday (Halloween) she was complaining of light headedness/dizziness, chills and is running a low grade fever. Monday morning same symptoms persist but is now accompanied by stomach pain. I am truly worried. Can anyone shed some light? Since the doctors seem to be guessing.

So... First of all thanks to those who replied so quickly! Second (and this is a big DUH)... ER doctor advised that the light headedness/dizziness, stomach pain, chills/fever were a reaction to the Erythromyicin. Dr. advised to stop all meds. Checked her out and no respiratory thing anymore... Guess the girl won't be taking antibiotics.

Glad you got another medical opinion. Erythromyicin is tough on some folks and it typically comes with instructions to take with food to ease the stomach pain.
Glad you got it all sorted out. I am also allergic to the penicillin family and there are antibiotics she can take when she is sick that are not related to penicillin. Just be sure to advise her doctor and especially her pharmacist. This is important because they know which drugs cause which reactions and what should and shouldn't go together. I once had an urgent care doctor (after I told them I was allergic to penicillin), precribe me related meds and the pharmacist caught the mistake, called the doctor and they gave me something else, thank goodness. My son had this when he was little 20yrs ago. The rash was called roseola. From then on he has been allergic to the penicilin family. Hope this is helpful.
not sure what it is, but i would suggest calling the doctor again and possible take her to the er. I think she is having a bad reaction to one of the meds she is on.
STOP ALL MEDS!!!! She is allergic. I know this because my younger sister is allergic and went through all this. She ended up so bad she stoped breathing and had to go to E.R. Then a dr. there told my mom that she can't use it and that it could have killed her. Always Always double check with another dr. Always research all meds. Anytime you have a reaction to med they should be stoped especially if it has to do with a child. Children have a harder time dealing with meds. Also if she is being given all these meds then later on in life no meds could work for her. just my thoughts and what I saw with my sister.

In high-school, I had to take Amox for a sore throat/ strep throat. I had a rash that occurred, but I also found out I had contracted 'Mono', and even tho I was of age - I was not kissing anyone~ :)

I was taken off the amox as I was told I could be allergic to it as well. I would say if anything your daughter is allergic. Prednisone is not a fun steroid to have and I know this from first-hand experience as I had it prescribed for Rheumatoid Arthritis.
This happened to me with amox but of course, my doctor's caught it and diagnosed it quickly. None-the-less, I ended up going to my graduation with a rash as it was only days away when this whole thing occurred. (and I no longer use it for antibiotics if needed.)
There could also be another allergy to another med she was on as well. I'd find another doctor for a second opinion or ask for a specialist for this.
Now that the problem is clear, she could still have mono - just keep it in mind if anything comes up in the next few days. (If it's mono - she's contagious to those in the home.)
Hi D. my advice is to take her to Childrens Hospital. I have found that when you take your child to urgent care or the ER at regular hospitals it is a look and diagnose thing and not a thorough exam. Whenever I go to Childrens ER I leave with a peace of mind and a clear understanding of everything. Also they more than likely have seen EVERYTHING so to treat her will be second nature..Hope this helps..
I have never heard of this type of a reaction but I would take the other person's advice. Try to stop the meds for a few days see how she is doing and if it still is happening I would go to another Dr or dermatologist (they specialize in that stuff). Good luck it can be so scary
Definitely see another doctor or specialist. We have become so accustomed to using many of the older antibiotics and we don't think of the side effects until this type of thing happens.
Your daughter's symptoms have gone on way too long to take any more chances. The secondary symptoms MAY be a case of the flu but don't wait to see. Have her checked again and make certain the steroids have not caused any organ damage.
If your daughter was on a high dose of prednisone and stopped abruptly, this could be a serious problem. If she was on a low dose of prednisone and stopped at 1mg. that wouldn't cause the problem. Either way, give your doctor one more chance to rectify this. Ask the Doctor to run some blood work. It's not our of line to ask for a referral to an allergist.
OMG. prednisone in a child????? Unbelievable. Okay, D., if you would like to consider NON traditional medicine, i.e. alternative solutions, then find a Nature's Sunshine distributor. Probably online. Get some Red Clover Blend drops. These are great. They're a blood cleanser. And they're usable on people as well as pets! Just a few drops in some water. Add some patience of course.
Your daughter's body is not used to the antibiotics. DEFINITELY not used to steroids! I'm sorry but prednisone.....I have issues with it. That's dangerous stuff! Get the red clover blend, and I'll bet it will help a lot more naturally. It's natural, so it's a heck of a lot safer.
As for using it on pets....absolutely. I had 2 cats that had respiratory troubles once. One worse than the other. A few drops in their water dish, and within a couple of days they were in the pink.
This is the bad part h1n1 is running the flu is running strep is running and so is broncitis and pnemonia. It is possible that the drugs she has been on can give her stomach cramps in the reaction of diahrria. Or the other thing is is maybe she caught something else it is a possiblilty. I think you need to see a 2nd opinion pediatric dr. who is highly recommended. I see a dr named Ahraf Berry hes a very good dr. He is through Macomb Pediatric Assoc. In warren and clinton twp. My son is allergic to amoxycillin and ceclor. His rash turned into hives, which could have turned into severe skin burn and placed him in the burn unit of the hospital if I had not called his ped. with the symptoms. The ped. knew right away from my symptoms description that it was hives and had me bring my son in asap. The diagnosis was correct and meds were stopped. To this day he is still severly allergic not only to amoxycillin and ceclor but also laundry detergents. I have to be extra careful with this child. But I wouldn't trade him for anything.

This happened to my son also. It was 2 months, they thought he was having a reaction to fish or a wool sweather. Took him to Childrens hospital, they said it was the amoxycilin and took him off put him on Benadryl (he blow up like a balloon), went back to children and they said he was allergic to the benadryl. The rash finally went away. Just remember to always put it in her medical history, they will probably end up putting her on Keflex which my son takes till this day. PS this all happened when he was 18 months old, so he couldn't tell me anything except mommy it hurt.
I know it is the worse feeling in the world, glad she is doing better.
I am allergic to amoxycillin. I would get a rash, hive like, and become very sick. Im not familiar with some of the other medicines you mentioned, but i do take zyrtec everyday. I would stop everything and see if some of her symptoms go away. If not, see a different doctor.
