We had my daughter's fourth birthday party a week ago. Her actual birthday is coming up next week and I would like to do a little something special. Any ideas?
When ever we have a party before the actualy birthday, we usualy save a small gift for that day. The birthday person gets to choose what they want for dinner. We have a little cake after dinner and they open their small gift. You can also wait till they are sleeping the night before and hang streamers in the doorway to the bedroom.
My kids rarely had their parties on their actual birthdays and they were always fine with it. I have a girl and a boy and especially when they were little, they loved being able to help bake their own cakes or cupcakes and decorate them themselves. I got a set of decorating tips and made different colored frosting or got little sprinkles, whatever they wanted. We let them choose what they wanted for dinner, we had cake and sang Happy Birthday and gave them a gift. It was more of a family thing.
My kids never grew tired of hearing the story about the day they were born.
We actually have lots of videos and pictures of their parties and last year on my son's 14th birthday, we invited a couple friends over to eat popcorn and watch his birthday movies. It was fun!
My kids have always had their birthday party before the actual day. So on the special day they get to choose what/where we do for dinner. They also get to choose a small cake and have one or two small presents to open. We have also made Build A Bear a birthday tradition, since it can be expensive to visit there. It has always been special for them even if it's not a big party.
We get a little cake and the kids get to have cake for breakfast. It's something fun to brag about during the day. Then they get to pick what's for dinner. Have fun!
If she is in pre-school, then maybe you can take cupcakes to school to celebrate there. Or, you can always have a small cake at home for her or maybe take her out for a family dinner. If you already gave her your gifts at the party and don't have any other gifts to give her, maybe go to the store and get her a couple of inexpensive gifts for her to open so that her day doesn't seem like just another ordinary day.

We do is for everyone of my kids' birthday. always a party on the weekend, so if their bday is during the week, I usually let them pick a restaurant and we go out to eat and get ice cream. They LOVE it!
her favorite food, cake and ice cream. if you have any family in town and they weren't at the first party make it a family affair!
Just make it "her" day. We let her pick her breakfast, lunch and dinner. Had a small cake and sang her happy birthday. Nothing too special, but fun. We also went to her favorite park...
We too let our daughter pick where we go for dinner that year. She feels "big."

Take her to Build a Bear workshop to make a special teddy bear
Take her to Sweet & Sassy to get glammed up with hair & makeup & manicure just for fun
Take her to The Magic Time Machine for dinner - the waiters dress up as characters and they have bubbling magic potion drinks - very kid friendly
A day at the Arboretum or Zoo is nice if the wheather is cooperating
Growing up we didn't have a lot of money, so on our birthday's mom would always make our favorite foods for dinner and we got to eat on the "good" china by candlelight. It was really special and something I want to do with my own kids eventhough our financial situation is better than my parents' was at that time.
We have a tradition in our family that the birthday person (of all ages!) gets to choose what we are having for dinner, even if it is cereal! I also decorate the house with birthday decorations. I buy them at the dollar store and reuse them from birthday to birthday (I do buy new mylar balloons each time). For summer birthdays I decorate the night before when the kids are in bed so they wake up to the decorations. For school year birthdays I do it when they are at school and they come home to it. I make a homemade cake and we have a family-only celebration on the actual birthday. Its a great way to make them feel special for that day and you don't have to break the bank for an additional party.
On the actual day they pick their favorite restaurant. We have one stipulation, a waitress must come to the table. So that eliminates all Mickey D's and Bk's. :o) But not IHOP's.
Before my oldest started school, we let him pick what he wanted to do for his actual birthday. He has chosen the zoo, Chuck E. Cheese, Dallas World Aquarium. My youngest is lucky enough to have a summer b'day, so, I guess, we'll continue to go some place special for his b'day each year. Last year for his 2nd b'day, we took him to the Dallas Children's Museum. He had a blast, except at lunch when I spilled an entire Coke in his lap!! After our outing, we have a family dinner and let the b'day boy open his gifts from his family.
