So I think My 3yr. old may have Alopecia Areata. She has never had really healthy hair and I am a hairstylist so I have been trying everything I can think of to help it. But the other day I noticed a bald spot while washing her hair. It is located in the back near her neck line and is about the size of a quarter. I have a Drs. App set and aslo to get a referral for a dermatologist. I was just wondering if any of you ahve dealt with this or knew someone who has and what I can expect from it. I have been doing lots of research on it, but would just like a response with first hand experiance

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Alright Moms, for those of you who have helped me with my 3 yr old. We went and saw the Dermatologist yesterday. She looked at it and examined the area, and diagnosed Kylee with Alopecia Areata. She gave me some cream to rub into the area. It's a streoid to help grow the hair back. She said she cannot tell me whether she will be a minor or severe case. But that normally when a child gets it and as rapid as the hair loss was she could most likely have a severe case. It has gotten a little bigger within the past two weeks...Ugh.
Thank you to all that helped me with this and gave me info.

Hi J., I have alopecia also but, I started six years ago when I think it was caused for too much stress. The first time I go one spot as a dime size and and then two more and the largest was three inches circle. I went to the doctor and honestly nothing help but time, for my hair to growth back. now I get those spots every year one or two but not as big as the first time. what I do now and I think it helps I put a little piece of alovera plant(only the jelly) when it starts a leave it for 10 minutes every day.
Good luck

It could be a lot of things. She could be sleeping on that spot and rubbed the hair off, like babies sometimes do. I would still definitely have her checked. It could also be that, for some unknown reason, her body isn't absorbing all the vitamins and nutrients she needs. Also, have you tried giving her more jello, for the keratin in it. She could also be allergic to something in the hair products. I have heard about alopecia. The youngest I've ever heard someone having it was 9 yrs old.
I wish you all the best

Hi J.,

My 5-year old son had a sudden bald spot appear on the crown of his head a few months ago. From what I can tell it sometimes just happens. Our doc. didn't seem too concerned, as it also sometimes spontaneously resolves itself, but requested a follow-up appointment to check on him later this summer. She also ordered a blood test to make sure there was no thyroid issue contributing to the problem. His hair has begun growing back, though it is definitely not yet back to normal.

One thing that concerns me a little that you say "I have been trying everything I can think of" for your daughter's hair, as I have read that overstyling can sometimes be the cause of hair loss in young girls. If you don't think that's the case, however, just hang in there. Feel free to to contact me if you would like to chat some more, or if you get any good information.

J.,

My 6 year old son was told he might have Alopecia Areata about 7 months ago. He began to have a slight "dash" like a scratch on his head. Then it grew into a slight oval shape. The doctor said he will keep a record of the growth and then determine if it is. We were told it was a virus and a cold could have triggered it, along with stress from entering kindergarten. He beagn to have little light spots all over his head so we stopped giving him hair cuts to give his follicles a break. Till this day we are not sure what it is. I thought it might be him sharing razors at the hair salon or at home because my husband uses "Rogain" products and now that we have stopped taking him to the hair salon and have bought his own set of hair razors, not to mention, relieving his stress, his hair has begun to grow back.=)

Hi J. - I'm not familiar with that condition, but I'm certain that good nutrition will help her. Have you heard of Juice Plus? It's a convenient way to ensure optimal nutrition for your family, which will help lower risk of illnesses. As we all know, a regular diet of plenty of whole fruits and vegetables helps the body produce healthy DNA and helps the immune system work properly. Problem is that it's hard to get kids (even adults) to eat at least 9 raw servings of fruits and vegetables each and every day. I highly recommmend Juice Plus as an insurance plan to make sure you and your kids are getting the best nutrition. It's not a vitamin - or an isolated nutrient - but the real thing that provides the thousands of nutrients in combination to help our bodies work properly. 17 of the most powerful fruits and vegetables are juiced, all the sugar, salt, herbicides and pesticides removed, dehydrated and ground to capsule/chewable/and gummy forms. Please feel free to read more about the tremendous research behind Juice Plus. Also don't hesitate to contact me through this website if you have any questions. http://www.juiceplus.com/+cc42230. It's a nice way to ensure your daughter is getting good whole food nutrition on a consistent basis.

Well J.,

I was a Dermatology nurse for 9 years and have seen probably 100's of Alopecia cases, but honestly never have I seen them in a child that young. I'll be praying for you that it is not Alopecia because it's a long process to treat it. In adults there are many options, one that I have seen work is small injections into the bald spots with steriods that help the hair follicules to grow, the injections are not very painful at all so that is a plus. And there are medications etc... I hope that you definilty can get into a Dermatologist because they see many more cases of Alopecia than a pediatrician or a general physician. good luck and I'll pray you don't have to worry about this with your daughter.

Is it a perfect circle? Could she be pulling it out in that spot? or is it rashy or aggravated?

I knew a woman who had alopecia. It disappeared as quickly as it came on.

Hi. I am not sure if you live in Clark County, but I went to see Dr. Mueller (Muller, not sure of spelling) with Las Vegas Skin and Cancer. My teenagers' dermo reccommended him for me. I was told that this is his speciality. Prayers for you and your daughter.

Hi J.

I have a ten year old daughter who was tested but never diagnosed with any medical condition. She got a bald spot, approximately the size of a quarter, it did get a little bigger but nothing too noticeable. Her doctor said that some kids experience this in their early years but that it goes away after a few weeks, as long as her hair wasnt falling out, it was nothing to worry about. Eventually after a few weeks it did go away, hair started growing around it until it covered it completely. This happened when she was around 3 years old and she has never had any problems with her hair ever since. Of course you should get all the necessary testing done, but if they say that its nothing bad, then it probably isnt. I wish you and your daughter good luck.
