Almost 3 Year Old Potty Trained Girl

My daughter is almost 3 and is almost potty trained. Our confusion is this, when she pees it either shoots out onto the floor or her entire butt gets wet also. I have tried making her pee with her legs close together or open, leaning forward and back, putting her feet up on a stool or letting them dangle. The only time it doesn't shoot out is when her legs are way apart but that then makes it difficult because she starts taking her clothes off, which since she's going to preschool next week isn't the best plan. Any suggestions for making the pee actually go down?

What can I do next?

The only time this happened with my 3 year old daughter is when she would try to watch herself pee. As long as she's leaning forward a bit she does fine...with or without a potty seat on the toilet.

Ok, this is going to sound weird but, my daughter is one of triplets who are boys. I also have two older boys. She's our only girl. After seeing her brothers learn to hold their pee pees down, she started pushing down on hers as well, lol. She would squirt all over the place! But, after she started holding down her pee pee area, she can now aim it down where it needs to go. I know, sounds weird, but it works for her, lol. Then I taught her to get a big wad of toilet paper and wipe really good, way up front and way in back, so she doesn't get stinky or itchy, and she used to until she started wiping correctly! Hope that helps!

K.,
Is it more a question of hip angle? I would think that legs together, leaning forward would be the best...but......Sorry--I only have a boy. And he always sat BACKWARDS on the toilet--which also required complete undressing from the waist down. Lots of fun in a store or restaurant, I can assure you! LOL Is she using a small potty ring to sit on? That might help.
Good luck. And you WILL get out of the bathroom eventually! Look on the bright side--you probably know the location of every public restroom within a 20 mile radius of your house by now! :-)

I have four daughters, my youngest is 4. She is having the same issue. Her poor butt is so wet when she is done peeing. I don't ever remember this with the other 3. I was going to check with her doctor at her next visit. (november) You'll have to let me know if you figure anything out before then. For now i just tub her a little more often to help with the pee pee smell :-(

My daughter just mastered potty training (yeah!). The thing that works for her is she goes on a regular "big girl potty" and puts her butt down really low in the potty. Makes for having to clean your toilet extra extra good. She will find the right angle till it stops all the shooting pee. Good Luck, T.

Hi K.,

Have you talked with your peditrician? Has she been examined to see if she has a stricture of the urethra?

Just checking. Good luck. D.

My daughter did the same thing!
I THINK what causes it is when they're learning, they often "force" the pee out & that's maybe what makes it shoot up like a fountain! It's just something that takes practice.

I usually found that if my daughter leaned forward a lot that it was better, but not always. Like I said, practice makes perfect. Until then, keep the 7th Generation or Tushies wipes handy! :-)

So funny you should post this question. My 3 year old daughter was having the same issue and I was starting to think there was something wrong with her anatomy. I too always made sure she had her legs open a leaning back, but it still kept happening. Eventually it stopped, just a few weeks ago. I believe it stopped because I told her she couldnt use her little potty anymore and had to use the big potty. Now she has to concentrate on holding herself on the potty, doesnt lean over to watch her pee, and keeps her legs open as wide. But, not wide enough that she has to take her clothes off. I know how frustrating it is....believe me! I felt like my bathroom was always covered in pee.
Hopefully things will improve if you take away the potty chair and ALSO the little toliet seat that fits over the big toilet seat. I had the squirting issue when I used that also. The pee would end up between the little seat and the big seat...Arrgh!
Good Luck!

My dd is 2.5 and almost trained as well. What is going on? How does her butt get wet on a toilet? I'm assuming she must be still using a pottychair? If so switch her to a toilet. As for the spraying out the front her legs can be open and she need to be sitting up or a leaning a bit forward so she doesn't spray over the top of the toilet seat. I've never had mine get their butt wet when peeing. Perhaps she's waiting way to long to go to the bathroom and when she finally does it's just so much so fast she can't help it.
