Almost 3 Year Old Boy with Stinky Armpits!

Hi everyone! I have a question for those of you with older boys. My son turns 3 next week and I just discovered this morning that he has STINKY armpits- they rival my hubby's! LOL Isn't 3 years old awful young to have BO? He has always been hot natured, but not terribly sweaty. We did a wipe-off last night, so I know that I am going to have to start bathing him everyday. I am planning to switch to a stronger soap (I still use baby soap on him because I bathe my daughter and son at the same time and she has eczema- she's 5). I guess it's time to split up bath time. Any thoughts?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks to all who responded! I was more in shock than anything when I smelled his BO! I switched to using bar soap on him, and that has made the smell go away. So I think I will stick to the bar soap and call it good. Thanks again!

My cousin's little girl had BO pretty badly, too and she found on the internet that zinc would help that so she is taking a zinc supplement and the odor has gone. Good luck!

I would try a different soap first and it may help. I've had to use deodrant on my daughter for over a year or two now. She just turned 5. I don't use it all the time, but when I know she will be getting hot or if we are going to church I normally use it. I've asked her doctor about it and she said that kids just mature faster now and that sometimes they require deodrant at younger ages. She said it would not hurt her. My daughter thinks it funny to use. I use Suave Roll On and only swipe once under each arm. Good luck!

J., my thoughts are to use natural products and also to use products to help detox his body. We are affiliated with so many chemicals daily through products we put on our skin and foods that we eat. The company that I am affiliated with Arbonne has so many wonderful products for babies and children to bathe in and great lotions. You can give me a call ###-###-####, email ____@____.com or ck out my web for more info www.successfromtheheart.myarbonne.com. Thanks, K.

There are some children who go through this and have to have prescribed deodorant. Your Pediatrician may have some good advise for you. Give them a call.

If you're feeding him a lot of processed and restaurant foods, that could be a major culprit. These foods contain a lot of additives that increase allergic reactions as well. Try taking him off everything processed (bag, box or can) and really increase his intake of fresh or frozen fruits and vegetables. YOu should see a major difference after two to three weeks. You should also see improvements in all the other problems you stated in your bio - including your daughter's eczema, your son's willfullness, and everyone's serious allergies. My youngest was on a host of medications - even an inhaler - and now she's not taking anything. I hope this helps. Let me know if you would like some kid-friendly food tips.

Try putting some baby powder under his arms, if he is getting hot he may be sweating more than you relize. Also, you should be bathing him daily.

I use Irish spring soft soap on my boys, my youngest has eczema and it doesn't irritate his skin and it kills little boy odors.

I definitely think he could use a soap like Safeguard and/or Ivory and be fine since it doesn't sound like he has the sensitive skin. You will probably need to use a lotion following bath since it will be more drying on his skin. That does seem young to be stinky smelling, however, kids always develop in their own little ways. I would mention it to his dr. at his next check up or go ahead and call the nurse about it. Ask if they recommend any brand of deodorant for the younger children. Otherwise, try an OTC one lightly on his underarm skin and monitor it closely for any signs of irritation/rash.

Are you sure he outgrew the protien allergy? Sometimes problems metabolizing food can cause body odor. Also, does he have any armpit hair? This would indicate early development. I would suggest milk and meats without hormones, if you are sure he is not still having food allergies (you might just want to try him with rice milk and see what happens). The food we are supplied with has hormones that are causing our children to mature more quickly, it's not just "happening". They make chicken have larger juicier breasts and they make cows produce twice as much milk. (hmmmm...go figure, kids are developing earlier!)

There are alternatives, but they cost a little more. I can say it is worth the investment because I have 2 girls, and the last thing I want is for them to have to deal with the stress of PMS at age 7, which is becoming more and more common.

As far as deodorant goes, be careful not to get one with aluminum in it (I think that is what makes something an "antiperspirant", so, maybe stick with just deodorant?).

Good luck,
~K.
