Allergist Referral

Hi moms: I was wondering if anyone could recommend an allergist in the South Suburbs. My 8-year-old daughter, Kara, had an allergic reaction to something she ate last week. This is the 2nd time this has happened within the past year, but this time was much worse. She developed this rash - welts that looked like very horrible mosquito bites - all over her entire body. I took her to the prompt care center at the Advocate Medical Center in Tinley, and was told to give her Benedryl and that it just needed to work it's way out of her system. I did follow up with our pediatrician's office and was told the same thing. But it's been a week, and she still has a few of the welts. They seem to come and go, so I'm assuming it's still working it's way out of her. I'm concerned that the next time this happens, it could be much worse. Having no experience with allergies, I don't know where to go. I am in Lockport and am happy to go in either direction. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks so much! C. Skevis-Koch

Dr. Radeamaker at Well Grouop in Chicago Heights. He was a pedatrician first and has been an allergist for over 20 years. Highly recommended.

Hello.
There is an organization that has offices in a few locations (Oakbrook, Lemont, Naperville - and I think they may have even expanded further since we went. They have two physians who specialize with Children. The Oakbrook location is 630. ###-###-#### - they will tell you what office is closest to you.

Hi C.,

I can imagine how scary that episode was, and I agree that the next time might be worse. I don't have an allergist on the south side, but I can recommend a book that I think would help you on your search for an allergist. Hopefully another mom can give you a specific allergist. The book is "It this my child?" by Dr. Doris Rapp. It's an older book but covers just about every allergic situation you can think of. I have also found that building up the immune system can help people with allergies. The most common food allergens are milk, eggs, wheat, corn, sugar and dyes. Avoiding artificial flavors, colors and sweeteners is also a good idea. Her immune system may be overtaxed. The immune system has to deal with artificial things coming into the body.

Being a hive/allergy/angioedema sufferer myself, what they told you is true, it does just need to work itself out of her system, which can sometimes take ahwile (week or two), but please tell me they wrote you a Rx for an epi pen. That is the most important thing to have when you have bad reactions to things. It can save your life. If you didn't I'd call her pediatrician and demand he or she write a Rx for immediatey.

We go to dr. Wally (Vorapohot Sattisarat) in Joliet. He is kind and detail. My daughter has severe alergy, develop hives and coughing, and since she has been tested, we know to stay away from cashew. We use zyrtec and carry epipen. His number is ###-###-####. 2000 Glenwood Ave suite 100.
I hope your daughter will get better and doesn't have severe alergy.

I will second the recommendation for Dr. Tim Brown. I have two children with food allergies and I have found him to be excellent! Their focus is pediatric allergies, and his manner with children is fantastic. Also, I never feel rushed at his office. There is lots of time to ask questions and they make you feel very comfortable. They also make the skin tests as good as possible for the kids by providing movies to watch while waiting for the reactions. We have epipens and "action plans" for both children now.

I will also say that I personally had a bad experience with the offices of Dr. Diana Ozog. She was recommended to us by the pediatrician, but we didn't see Dr. Ozog. We saw Dr. Schraderus (sp probably wrong) in the Naperville office. It was our first ever time at an allergy doc and I didn't know much about food allergies in infants. I found them to be hard to deal with. Manner nice, but they didn't provide much guidance. For example, we were there with a baby who had feeding difficulties with breast milk and then did very well on Nutramigen (special formula that is hypoallergenic.) Also, baby had reactions to infant motrin and the baby flu shot. So we suspected food allergies, but didn't have much to go on since he had never actually had solid foods. They weren't good at suggesting what to test for. I thought there would be a standard panel of tests (there is, now I know) but they were strange about making the decision of what to test for. Then, my baby had a delayed reaction to something they tested for. He had the skin tests in the afternoon, but the next morning he woke up with his face all puffy and his eyes swollen shut. I had been offered baby benadryl at the office but declined since he didn't seem to have a reaction. I called right away when I found the reaction, but had to leave a message with the receptionist. In my message, I stated that I didn't know what the proper dosage was for my baby so I was waiting to give medication until I had a call back. I had to call 3 more times and waited about 5 hours from the time of my first call back. When they finally called, they said they wanted to see my baby in the office right away!!! SO, please don't go there.

Good luck!
