My daughter is 4 years old and just had a cold- allergy attack. she was on breathing treatment, steroid, and anti-biotic for an ear infection. she is doing much better, however she has a real bad stuffy nose still. I tried Benadryl for a few days and found that it made her irritable. I tried clairton and that does not take the stuffy nose away. When she was between 2 and 3 she had real bad allergy's, I thought we were in the clear. Any thoughts on what i should do, and how long can she go on like this?

What can I do next?

Benedryl makes you drowsy. so if she was irritable, she was sleepy.
Try Breathe Right nasal strips for kids. Try a vaporizer. Try Vick's VapoRub.

Anything than feeding her steroids and stuff. did you give her some pro-biotics while she was on the anti-biotics? Her immune system might be low, which doesn't make anyone feel good.

I would try some probiotics along with potential diet changes. It's amazing how certain foods can cause allergy flare-ups (even if a child isn't technically allergic to the food)! A good book I just read is "Healing the New Childhood Epidemics: Autism, ADHD, Allergies and Asthma" by Dr. Kenneth Bock. It talks about how these four disorders are all tied to the immune system and how they can be effectively treated with changes in diet and nutritional supplements. My nephew had lots of problems - on the Autism spectrum and showed many symptoms of allergies and the like - and he's made an amazing turn-around following this program (which is why I read the book - in case my own daughter ever experiences any of this). I can't recommend it enough! The doctor does an amazing job explaining in layman's terms what is happening in these kids' bodies and how change in diet/added nutritional supplements can help.

we are having the same issue w/ my 7 year old. Try Zrytec instead. Sometimes people respond differently to Claritin vs. Zyrtec. My daughter is the opposite.... zyrtec is not clearing her nose, but Claritin seems to be working. Also try Little Noses Saline drops to help w/ the stuffy nose, it seems to be helping as well. Good luck!

A pharmacist told me just this week that she recommends Zyrtec. Claritin only works on an empty stomach, so if you are not following that guideline, that may be why you do not see results. That is why she prefers Zyrtec over Claritin for kids.

Allergies are a pain! My son struggled for years to the point of allergy induced asthma. Now he takes Claratin in the morning and a natural antihistamine to support it and overall health called OPC-3. The stuff is amazing. It also impacts over 200 other health related conditions! I take it too and have not had my usual ear/sinus infections twice a year with allergies for a long time!

Happy to share if you want to know more (I am a distributor)!

PS: She needs a decongestant for the stuffy nose like Sudafed.

i feel for ya! my son has asthma and i'm betting on allergies, too. he's also been on albuterol breathing treatments all week....and been on steroids multiple times.

anyhow, i was out buying benadryl yesterday and saw they have like a nasal gel for kids that's supposed to protect from allergies. it's in a tiny blue tube and i think it's made by claritin....not 100% sure.
also, i know triamenic makes a nasal spray for runny noses. you use it like once every 8 hours. it does give my son some relief, but doesn't last the whole 8 hours if you ask me. i like to use it before he goes to sleep to get him started.
anyhow, good luck! i hope your daughter gets some relief and you find a treatment plan that works for her!

Hi L.---It's never good when you are watching your little one suffer. My daughter had recurrent ear infections, well into college, because of allergies. Fortunately, we did not have to deal with steroids or breathing treatments, but she did have tubes in her ears several times. But that nose, boy, did it ever make a mess for her.

I wish I knew then what I know now. Did you know that your diet has a huge effect on how the immune system works? This is not to say that your daughter has a poor diet, but sometimes, when a person is susceptible to a health issue, the diet has to be better than good to avoid the disease.

Your best immune system support is a diet based on whole foods; fruits, veggies, whole grains and legumes, with some seeds and nuts as well. Minimuze the use of animal protein, using it as a condiment or flavoring for soups or stews. Avoid cows milk completely, as it is an allergen to most people, mucous production being one of the biggest problems. Please go to www.strongbones.org to learn more about 'Why not milk'. I say this as a former milk lover, having quit the habit in my early 40's. Don't be concerned about calcium. It's not absorbed well from milk anyway. I can share a list of foods that are much better sources of calcium, if you would like.

Another food that has a big, negative impact on the immune system is sugar. Sugar and sugary foods make the immune system lazy. So it makes sense that we would get sick more often with a high sugar diet, or that our immune system becomes sensitive to things it needn't be worried about, like pollen or dust.

I have some great charts about how many servings of fruits and veggies that kids of different ages should be eating. I have found, however, that sometimes eating a 'good' diet is not enough to prevent disease processes. So to get extra fruits and veggies into my family's diet, we use a whole food based supplement, made of 17 different fruits, veggies and grains. Independent research shows that it works to help support an healthy and balanced immune system. A Dr. I work with in Chicago has never hospitalized any of her asthma patients after they start consuming Juice Plus+. JP+ also comes in gummies and kids love them. Let me know if you would like to know more about any of these topics. It is my honor to help people learn how to optimize their health, even if JP+ is not right for them.

And one other thing. You can also try chicken soup with hot peppers in it. It will help drain the mucous. You'll have to find the level of 'hot' that your daughter can stand, but it really works. I have a recipe if you'd like.

Sorry about the length of this reply. For me, it helps to know why. I look forward to talking to you. In health, D. ###-###-#### www.dianeshealthed.com

Sounds like it may be time to visit an allergist! We see Dr. Bahrainwalla (who is a peditric allergist) in Royal Oak. The group practic is just across the street from Royal Oak Beaumont on 13 mile road. They are really good over there!
