Hi Mommas. I was wondering if there are mommas whose babies are allergic to rice cereal? We've been given my 8 1/2 mo old bb rice cereal since he was ~ 4 1/2 mo old (feeding with a spoon). Since we can remember he's had this sort of red rash around the corners of his mouth. Well, we've tried cutting out fruits thinking it was too much acid. No change. It always gets progressively worse during the day, when he wakes up it's not so bad, but gets worse after meals. He's allergic to dairy and soy and has eczema (sp?), but the eczema on his body is almost non-existant, minus the corners of his mouth. We also think he's allergic to bananas or apples (he was scratching his throat and his body eczema got 100 tiems worse), but I didn't think a rice cereal allergy was possible. I've cut the rice cereal out today, and his mouth is improving. Does anyone know of a good age to allergy test children for food allergies?

What can I do next?

It is more likely something in the cereal rather than the rice itself. For example, some rice cereals contain soy and since your son is allergic to soy, that could well be the problem. However, it is possible to allergic to rice. You can have kids tested for allergies at any age, you just need to be aware that many allergists only test for immediate allergic reactions and this reaction sounds like it's a more delayed one, so you would want to find someone that will test for IgG antibodies. Also, I'm assuming you are breastfeeding since he's allergic to dairy and soy. If so, some of what you eat may also be causing the reaction. For example, I had an undiagnosed dairy allergy and gluten sensitivity (celiac disease) when I nursed my first child and he reacted to the dairy and gluten in my diet because of the leaky gut from the celiac, there are more than the normal amounts of proteins in my system and thus in my breastmilk.

My children could neither one take the rice cereal without throwing it up. I changed to oatmeal or multigrain and changed brands and they were fine. For somee reason, the rice cereal did not agree with them at all. When we started on solid foods, our doctor had us do one fruit or vegetable solid for one week to see if there were any reactions, if not, move on to the next. We did just that and were only having reactions to dry rice cereal. They could have all of the cereals from the jar though.

Good luck - I know it is frustrating having skin issues - both of my boys do and we have to use Arbonne for skincare and Melaleuca for laundry. It has been an eye opener for sure!

It could also be due to an additive in the cereal. I used to make my own by putting different whole grains in a coffe bean grinder.

The simple answer is YES... he could be allergic.
Stop giving it to him for a week or so and try again in a week to get your answer. If you haven't introduced anything else new... then you will know.
Commercial Rice Cereal is processed. Try to find Earth's Best (earthsbest.com) as it is NOT processed and it made from whole grain brown rice.
Have you asked your pedi?
GOOD LUCK
