Yes, they do seem to have helped me. However, I've always had to use medication along with it. Helps you sneeze less and feel better if you are allergic to dust. However buying new filters every 2-3 months gets expensive, so I stopped using it due to cost. My allergy Dr. recommended a HEPA filter. I have a Bionaire and another major brand that is circular in shape (can't think of the name). The filters several years ago $25-30 dollars a piece, not sure if it is still the same or gone up. There is a pre-filter and filter on some brands and then some that just have a filter. The ones with the pre-filter seem to do a better job than the ones with just a filter.

Another thing that helps is to remove the carpet and have hardwood or tile on the floors. Keep pets away from child's room, or outside or in other rooms.

Yes, they work, when you change the filter you see all the dust and dirt that it picks up. It picks up dust and dirt you can't see that so tiny. Some can be loud and that is the downside to it. You may be able to get by with doing it just at night while she is sleeping or for part of the day that she is in her room during the day. The air purifiers I have bought, have been high quality ones that were recommended in Consumer Reports and by Dr.'s. I'll look for my other air purifier and see if I can get that name for you. Be sure and get a filter that it is easy to get replacement filters for. I had one where no stores had the replacement filters, I had to mail off for new one and wait to get them in the mail.

I really like the 3M Filtrete air purifier. It comes in two sizes and I have the one for a smaller room and it's in my daughter's bedroom. She is allergic to cats and dogs. We have both in our house however the pets are not allowed in her bedroom and she usually doesn't pet the animals. If she does, she washes her hands.
I am amazed at how much the filter collects. I can usually tell when it's time to change the filter because she'll wake up sneezing or will sneeze during the night. Once the filter is changed, I don't notice symptoms.
I found mine new on ebay for approx $70 about two years ago and I love it. It's quiet and effective but the replacement filters are not cheap. The 3M brand ones last about 3 months whereas the generic ones last about 1 month.

I have been an allergy sufferer for years. One of the best things I purchased was a Honeywell Hepa filter. It does an awesome job of collecting dust, mold, etc. I even had one in my classroom for a few years and it really helped with odors, especially when we had a fire in our area.
Additionally, your doctor may recommend you encase your son's mattress and his pillow. The covers can be purchased at Target and help keep the dust down.
Finally, your doctor may recommend getting rid of dust collectors in his room. This is basically all room decor and stuffed toys that collect dust and can't be washed.

I have a Honeywell 17000-s. You can get them and the filters at Target, so it is easy to maintain. I have it in my bedroom, and it really works. I had asthma as a child, it went away and now I'm 50 and it has returned the last few years. My chest would start getting tight in the evenings, and I would cough all night. The filter has really helped, and when I change the pre filter every 3 months, it looks like the lint trap in the dryer with all it collects out of the air, so it really does do the job. I agree with Charise C's other suggestions, my mother had to keep my room dust-free when I was a child.

We have two idylis ones and they work great. The ones we have are for large areas and do our entire upstairs. We have a wood stove with electric baseboards for heat and used the wood stove most nights last year, our first year here. Long story short we figured out our dog was allergic to the wood smoke if any got in the house, lots of drooling, didn't look great if she was upstairs, fine when she was in the basement after about 15 minutes. So we got the two purifies and she started to be able to stay in the room without drooling. My father in law has come to visit a few times and is allergic to both the dog and our three cats. He has not had any problems while here not even sneezing from his allergies. So I think they defiantly do work and am glad we have them.
