Wow, Im having a day! My 6 and 2 year old are both running fevers (headache sore throat). We are going to the doctor tomorrow. Do you know if its likely that a breastfed newborn can catch this? Thank goodness Im breastfeeding. ;)

Yep. My twins both caught colds at one month old, and they were breastfed. It's hard to keep them from getting sick when others in the house are.
Yes..newborns can get sick...breastfeeding, or not. Just make sure everyone is washing hands often, and keep their faces away from baby.
Chances are the baby wont get anything as long as you keep the kids hands off for awhile and keep your hands clean inbetween dealing with them. Nursing babies are pretty resilient.
Yes, a newborn can catch viruses. Good thing is, newborns carry your immune system for sometime, so hopefully he/she will not get it. Just practice good hand washing and no kisses on the mouth.
Yup...my newborn (2 weeks old) got sick when my older boys were sick. She was also exclusively breastfed. Like the other moms said, wash hands and try to keep baby away from kids...hard, I know! If baby does get sick, the vaporizer was a godsend for us!

when my daughter was 3 weeks her older sister had strep - the dr told me to keep her away even though babies don't usually get strep. When she was 6 weeks old she was hospitalized for H1N1 - spiked a temp sky high within hours in the middle of the night. (I believe she either got it when we dropped paperwork off to work/daycare & picked up a check or at the picture studio). She was exclusively breastfed then. When my older daughter was in the NICU anytime I had the slightest sore throat or cough (happened a lot the ppl across the hall smoked nonstop and I'm allergic) or even low temp I couldn't go see her.
Not to scare you - but yes breastfed newborns can get sick. I would keep the older kids away until symptom free and wash hands nonstop! But I'm paranoid!
Anything is possible. Breastfeeding isn't a magic shield for illnesses. :-)
Yes, newborns can catch what goes around. However, our pediatrician told us that for the first 6 months newborns have built up mommy's immunity while in utero. So there's a good chance baby won't; lot's of hand washing and don't let the kids get face to face with baby. Hope the older ones get better soon
Yes, newborns can get sick quite easily even if nursing. They have an underdeveloped immune system. It's great you're nursing, though, because your body will send over help for her immune system. I'd try to keep the sick kids away and keep clean hands, etc... but that is really hard to do with your own kids, even if you are super careful.
yes the newborns can get sick, When my sons were 10 and a baby not 1 yr old yet; the 1yr old would get sick every single month. We would go the pediatrician and get on axomiciliin for 10 days, he was well until the next month and back to the doctor.
I was introduced to products that both my children could take and we begin a little program of supplementing the diet. The boys are now 25 and 15; they are as healthy as could be, no longer gets sick and all is well.
If you would like more information please send me a private message and I willl provide more information. Hope this helps; this program saved me alot of money in doctor bills and has made me a very happy women.

Oh yes! Mysecond caught his brother's nasty cold the day after we brought him home.
My son didn't get the my flu when I was bfing because my body was fighting it off. But if somebody had it and I didn't, then he more than likely would have gotten it.
So infect yourself, J/K!!!!!!!!!!!
Yes, newborns can get sick. Anyone remember the Norwalk Virus?? I'll spare the details, but my husband, my baby daughter, and I all got it at the same time...
There is a chance and if the newborn gets a fever, call your PED night or day! It can turn to sepsis or meningitis quickly in a newborn. They also dehydrate rapidly! Good luck keeping baby well! I have 2 other kiddos and worry about this scenario myself- the first 30 days are the most crucial period to make it through fever free!
Molly,
Thank goodness you are breastfeeding! It is a much lower risk when infants are breastfeeding. Keep up your immunity, frequent handwashing, have your kids wear masks if they are going to be near the baby etc....Hopefully the litle one won't get sick.
