Hi Ladies I am a divorced single mom of two. Once I got divorced I no longer had health insurance. I am having trouble finding something I can afford. My ex covers my children. I need something for me. Any knowledge on this and advice from any one would be greatly appreciated. I haven't had health coverage in over 2 years. And don't have 5,000 for a deductible :/ I don't think I qualify for medicad and I really don't want to be on that. I don't know exactly how CHIPS works? So any advice I am thankful for :)

What can I do next?

Sorry - I can't help you with CHIPS or medicaid information.

I can tell you that you can call insurance companies and see what an individual plan will cost you.

I'm sorry that obamacare or the "Affordable Care Act" (laughs heartily!) did not make health care affordable...it took away preexisting conditions so that people like you who have not had health coverage in a while cannot be denied coverage. maybe the only good thing to come out of it.

If you are employed full time - does your employer not offer insurance? If so - ask about it.

Go to your local social services office and ask if you qualify for any assistance or medicaid. The worse they can do is say no. The best they can say is yes...or even point you in the right direction.

Good luck!

hey sweetie, i'm in the same lack of insurance boat as you.
i'm on ehealthinsurance.com right now filling out an app.
no app fee. i found health/dental for approx $150. it's on a month to month basis (unlike the one at work) so i plan on just doing it for a little while until i can reapply w/the county hosp for help.
anyway, that's what i'd recommend. affordable and health care don't go in the same sentence as a previous poster said...i think that's freakin' hilarious! :) and sadly....so true :(
good luck hon!

Chips is medicaid for children only. If you go to the Texas Medicaid website I believe they have a calculator so you can put in your income and debt to see if you qualify for Medicaid.

I sure do wish you success, and I will watch the responses, because I have two sisters and several acquaintances in the same boat.

I paid huge premiums (finally nearly $500/mo.) for only myself with Assurant Health for decades. This included a $6000 deductible, and restrictions on anything that might have involved my lungs (I've had asthma since early childhood). With that high deductible, the insurance company never had to pay a penny toward any medical care I need. The premiums kept me so broke, I saw a doctor only for the most urgent problems. My state of health is still paying for that neglect. I'm finally on Medicare; much lower premiums for actual coverage.

The Affordable Health changes coming should help, but I don't think the provisions that will subsidize low income people will be available for another year or so. But then, if your income is low, you will probably qualify for help on premiums. I hope you find something sooner.

Affordable and health insurance do not go together. Sad to say. The pre-existing clause is defunct. Ran out of money. So the pre-existing problem still exists. It was on the news a while ago. My daughter pays $14,000 a year for a single. She is self employed. All you can do is go on line and research all the insurance companies. You know what you need and can afford. It will take some time, but doable.

I just got notice that my premium is being raised another $1200 / year and I don't think it is very affordable.
CHIP is the acronym for Children's Health Insurance Program. I live in PA so perhaps CHIPS is something else in TX?

Sadly in 2014 the next phase of the AHA will activate so even if you can afford something now - it will probably increase as most individuals will get what they feel they need at the time and if that plan doesn't meet the minimum requirements for coverage, then your plan will be terminated. So if you can opt for catastrophic insurance now - well, in 2014 you won't be able to. You will be able to pick a vanilla plan that either has higher premiums or high deductibles.
