if you can't get him to drink or if he is throwing it up he won't be easy to hydrate. Popsicles go along way and they have the pedialite ones that work even better. If he gets any worse I would take him to the ER
My son who will be 3 at the end of the month has been sick. He has had a fever, nasty dry cough, runny nose. I have been giving him triaminic for the cough and tylenol for the fever and today he started vomiting when I would give him medicine. He hasn't really ate anything and has been drinking very little. I called the Dr. office and they told me that it was probably the flu and to keep him hydrated and let it run it's course. Tonight he had a very small bowel movement and it looked like there was really dark "veiny" things in it and then he got sick about 20 min. later and his vomit was clear but it had the same dark "veiny" things in it too....I just don't know what to do. Any advice is greatly appreciated...sorry this is kind of gross!

Thank you all for the advice! He became very lethargic last night so my husband and I decided to take him to the ER. He was very dehydrated, has the flu and nasty ear infections in both ears. They gave him fluids via a IV and chest X-ray to make sure it hadn't turned into pneumonia. The Dr. said the veiny things were from the medicine and not to be concerned! He is very tired today but he is now on antibiotics and we are hoping he is back to his normal self,I miss so much, before Christmas! Thank you all again for the help and ideas!

has he eaten anything different lately? could be food poisoning. but sounds to me like he's got the stomach virus that is going around. my hubby had it and it was just the same...started out like a bad cold then all of a sudden he started with diarhea and then severe vomiting. but it only lasted for like 24 hours. call the doc and see if maybe they can call your son in an Rx of fenergan to help with the nausea and amodium will help with the diarhea(my mom's a nurse and said it works the best). after his stomach has calmed down start him on clear liquids and then the BRAT diet(bananas, rice, applesauce, toast).
My suggestion would be to try to get a stool sample and if he vomits again, a vomit sample with these dark veiny things and take him to the emergency room. I would think it was just the flue, but I'm concerned about the dark veiny things. Does it look like it could be mucus or more like little worms?
Hi J.
My son went through something similiar and come to find out it was just a little bug. The best thing I found for him that he liked was jello water and pediasure chocolate flavored, it kept him hydrated and the jello water he just loved and popsicles he went to town on and chichken broth he was able to hold all these items down and I alternated motrin and tylenol and also bought him some pepto for his belly. Let me know what happens with your little man.

Uses your mothere intuition and go with it. You know your children better than anyone. The flue should be done by now it lasts about 24 hours so if it continues bring him in. If he poops again or vomits I would try to get a sample so they can look at it and see what you see. I havent gone through this but I was told my daughter had a cold when she had a UTI and it got so bad She was rushed to the hospital and had to stay for 3 days! You know your child and don't let them tell you it is just the flu it you know it isn't.

J., My son just got over this same thing it took about 5 days total. He still has a cough, but nowhere near what it was before. Try giving him pop sicles. I understand your pain. I absoulutley hate when my children are sick especially when no one can tell you exactly what it is.
Good Luck.
My son gets that way sometimes...After so long of giving children the same meds their body gets use to them and they will not work. My son takes a medication called Rondec. You can only get it by RX, but it works great for the runny nose and cough. You can call the dr and have them phone it in for you. I don't know if you have insurance or not, but if you have a Meijer close by the Rondec is free because of the new Antibiotic program they have. It's also grape flavored so he doesn't mind taking it. If your son is having trouble sleeping it will also help him sleep. For the vomiting you might try giving him some 7up. It's said that it settles the stomach. It works for me. If he's not wanting to eat get him some pediasure. It's packed full of vitamins and the things he needs.
I hope this helps maybe a little and I hope your lil man gets better soon

My dr always says to do the B.R.A.T. diet when kids are sick like that. Bananas, rice, apple sauce or toast. (Bananas have potassium and when a child is vomiting they lose a lot of potassium! My sons got critically low when he had the flu. The hospital said it was just from him getting sick so much.)
Personally, I would call the doctor's office and tell them you would like for him to be checked as a precautionary measure. I know I would be worried about keeping him hydrated. As for the veiny type stuff you are referring to, not sure about that... what color is it? Could it be blood? I would call the doctor, it may be more serious than a flu.
If he has a dry hacky cough I would try some benedryl, if that was his only symptom but since he has a fever it prolly is the flu, the dark veiny things in his stool could possibly be blood clots? If he has been vomiting alot or having bad diarehha his digestive tract could be irritated. I would just stick with the clear fluids, and broth and jello.
