My 2yr 5mo old daughter has been peeing on the potty for about 5months now. She's holding in her poop, though, until she wears a diaper for naptime and bedtime. She is getting terrible diaper rashes and a little constipated. She's pooped on the potty twice, so I know she can do it, but she is always holding it in until a diaper is on and she's in her crib to sleep. How can I get her to start going on the potty instead of her diaper? Do I need to stop putting a diaper on her at naptime and go full force with underwear???

What can I do next?

Hi - My son did this at the same age. He is now six. I was so afraid he would never poop in the potty. He too would get a pamper and try to put it on and I finally thought about it and said if you are that smart to do that at 2 then you can poop on the potty ...I did go full force with the underwear. Lots of work but worth it. I began to ask him about the reason, he told me finally there was snakes in the toilet. I did not get that at all - So I got out the spray bottle with water in it and we went to spraying and gettin rid of all the snakes - That did not work - Well, then I mentioned to him probably gotta go to the poopy doctor.........Within minutes, he jumps on the toilet and says look mommy I can poop in the toilet...Imagine that! The only one who did not get it was the parents...Anyway, a funny at the end - after he was a great potty pooper........He showed me the SNAKES - .....Ready, The little thin poopies kids make look just like SNAKES - - - - Kids are the cutest! Loved it - !!!!Good Luck -

I went though this with my daughter when she was exactly your daughter's age! (She will be 3 in October.) She would pee on the potty but start to panic a little when she had to poop and ask for a diaper to poop in. We would let her poop in the diaper and then empty the diaper in the toilet and let her flush it. This seemed to help and it wasn't long before she happily went on the "big" potty. Also, if you are comfortable with it, let her come into the bathroom with you. Good luck!

Hi N. - my daughter was a little older when we FINALLY got her to poop on the potty, but we just had to go cold turkey. She had a few accidents, but it only ended up taking about 4 days until she got the hang of it. Good luck!!

I had the exact same problem with my son. I was pulling my hair out because I knew he could, but he just refused to. He told me that he was scared to, cause it hurt. He started peeing on the potty at 16 months, but wasn't fully trained with the pooping until he was exactly 2 1/2 years old. What worked for us was 2 fold. We got Once Upon A Potty (a mamasource suggestion) and we started a pooping only potty chart. So, we had 2 charts, poop and pee. A sticker went on the appropriate chart and a big reward was given after x number of stickers per chart. Of course, a big reward (matchbox car) was given after every poop and after every 10 pees. If he pooped his pants, I took the toys he was playing with and put them in the reward basket. They had to be won back by using the potty. I also told him "I'm so proud of you. Are you proud of you?" To this day, 3 months later, after he poops, he says, "are you proud of me?" After 3 successful poops on the potty, we got him 1 thing, whatever he wanted. My son wanted a drive-in truck. Then, he would have to earn rides in it by going accident free for the day.
Also, if she goes at the same time of day, take her in the bathroom and read to her or play games while she's on the toilet. She may just forget about it. I used to put the potty in the living room and let him watch Once Upon A Potty while he sat on it, and sat on it (from the DVD).
My nephew, was completely different. He didn't want anything to do with the potty. But then, he said that he wanted a dog. My brother told him that if he starts pooping and peeing on the potty, he could get a dog for his 3rd birthday. From that day forward, he didn't go in his pants.
Recommendations:
Say no to diapers and pull-ups
Find out why she doesn't like to go in the potty - and address that issue
Watch her and get her on the potty as soon as she shows signs of trying to poop (even if she just finishes in the potty, that's a start)
Always dump the poop into the potty and let her say goodbye to it.
Be consistent and PATIENT

Best of luck! I have to start potty training again in 4 months, not looking forward to it.

You could try a reward chart for pooping on the potty. She gets O. sticker for each time and when she gets it filled up (could be 3, 5, 10--I'd start low to set her up fort success!) she gets to pick a special reward (toy/trip/dessert--whatever she's into). I am still using reward charts for my son (now 5). They really work for me and he is now working on wiping his own bum--YAY!

Hi N.!
We just did this with out 2 1/2 year old daughter too!
This may sound a little mean, but it just so happened that it worked! She had a yucky belly for 2 days, and I debated wether or not to put the diaper on, or make her go on the potty...and we used no diaper! Now, she poops on the potty!! :) She always wanted her diaper to poop in, and waited till nap/bed time to do it..or 1st thing in the morning. My Daughter is fully potty trained during the day, and through her naps, just wears a diaper at night. She doesn't get up yet to pee at night. There will be accidents, but that's to be expected! Other than at bedtime, we're all about the undies, and she loves them. We also have a little potty for her, and I read somewhere that those are best for pooping in because kids need to push it out, and with their feet on the floor pushing, they are more able to do it! And we sing songs like 'Patty Cake' and 'Itsy Bitsy Spider' and then tell stories until she goes!
Good Luck....e-mail me if you want to talk about this more. I'd love to have someone to talk to about this!

I have just gone through this with my daughter. She is 3yo. I started around the same time you did and when this started, the pediatrician recommended holding back on the potty training. The constipation can become an issue to the point of a blockage. Because she is so young, you have to give her time to be comfortable doing everything with the potty. We went through rounds of laxatives to help her feel more comfortable with pooping and to help her realize that it would not be painful. Apparently many kids feel like the poop is part of them and it is a separation thing.

I wish you luck.

Would she go if she sat on the potty for long enough? With my boys I would put them on the potty and we would read books and sing songs. Good Luck.

I would say yes to using just panties while you are at home. Unfortunatly that means some extra clean up work for you. I also used a sticker chart with my 2 kiddos and that worked great within a few weeks. They got a sticker for each pee and each poop. After 10 pee stickers and 3 to 4 poop stickers they got a prize. Usually a dollar store item. I hope this helps, Good luck! R.

Hi N.

I just wanted to let you know you aren't alone. My son is a year older and he refuses to poop on the potty, he won't even try. At first he just pooped in his pants, now he goes and gets a pull up, puts it on and poops. I am really not sure what to do, I have tried every incentive imaginable and he won't even sit on the potty if he has to go. My pediatrician says it's about control, this is something he can control so he does. I am out of ideas so maybe somebody on here will have some good ideas.

Most kids don't like getting splashed by the poop when it hits the toliet water. I would get her a little training potty to use, after she is done dump it in the big potty and wash it out. Good luck!

I was always told by the pediatricians to do underwear OR a diaper...never both. They told me that it sends mixed messages and confuses the child. I agree with another poster who suggested incentive charts.
