Hi Moms! I need advice to buy for a 5 y/o and 7 y/o boys. Their father was in an accident and is currently in a wheelchair and their mom is taking on alot. I thought I'd help somewhat with gifts. The info.I was told was that they both like to build things and the youngest likes Transformers and the older is into basketball. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!! Happy Holidays!

K'nex. They have the big pieces for the younger children and then smaller ones for the older children. My kids love them. They come with a little booklet that shows how to create numerous things not just one or two like the legos.

Legos and Lincoln Logs. For the basketball lover anything from his favorite team or anything related to basketball.

Well legos are always a hit and there are these terrific new building toys called LaQ , like legos but you can build with curves. You can find them on the internet at Think Geek.
Marvel Heros are generally good for this age range and of course Marvel Hero Comics.
If they are playing video games you can get them second hand at Game Stop.

I have to buy a gift for a male I've never met before and searching for ideas has led me to what I think will be a wonderful solution for my dilemma and quite possibly yours as well. I'm going to make marshmallow guns out of pvc pipe. I've found lots of easy instructions on the internet using 1/2" pvc pipe and they are powered by your breath. These are very inexpensive to make (less than $5 a piece) and sound like they are fun for all ages. The father could even be involved in creating these for his sons if you simply purchase the supplies. They can be decorated with paint, stickers or electrical tape. Really your imagination is your only limitation. I am planning on making 12 of these for an all out marshmallow fight for everyone from my 5 year old nephew to my 78 year old mother to use. We had a marshmallow fight at camp one year where we just threw marshmallows at each other. They are harmless but make a great sound when they make contact. I expect these toys will be just as fun. You're a very thoughtful person and i have no doubt whatever you decide to do will be just the encouragement this family needs. Merry Christmas!

my 7 year old loves anything that is Bakugan! i see a lot of legos ideas... i don't like that so much b/c the new ones where you build things come with like hundreds of pieces so i don't want them all over the house.
for the 5 year old... hot wheels are a big hit i buy hot wheels every year... boys can never have too many hot wheels... and my little one loves TMNT fugurines. and of course video games for whatever game system your boys have.

I have got a 9 & 5 yr old- both boys- They wanted marbles for Christmas. At Walmart they have a set of 150 marbles(with idfferent sizes) and a book of different marble games for $5 and at Target we found a marble set that you build and race the marbles down- I think it was $15. Kenex is another builer set kindof like legos, but with smaller peices- my boys really enjoy that one and they range in price from $5-$30 I think. We also have some magnetix- they are a lot of fun, but really expecive- about $40 at Target but you might want to check online.
A nice basket ball-if the older one doesn't have one or a glow in the dark basket ball goal and ball that hook on the back of the door- we had one of those for awhile and it was fun.
my kids are also getting some books and a couple of video games and some board games- at Walmart they have a combo of battleship and connect 4 for $9- two player games they should both like.
Hope that helps!
Merry Christmas!

I have 6 & 8 year olds. Legos are a big hit. There are several styles that might fit each of them.

legos or transformers. My 4 year old has transformers and loves them, however, they come appart too easily and he is constantly bringing them to me to fix or transform. Even the ones for a 4 year old are too difficult to transform so be careful. The movies are PG-13 so I would not reccomend them for this age. You might trey the home depot tool sets, they are a little pricy but the workbench has alot of tools it is $50 at Toys R Us, that is what my 4 yo is getting from Santa. He is also getting Lincon Logs.

My son loves to build. He loves his Legos, Lincoln Logs and Magnetix (not for everyone though). You might also consider Kinex (sp?) or some decent architectural style blocks. You can't lose with Legos though imo. so sorry to hear about your friend's husband. I hope he gets better soon. That has to be so hard.

i have 3 boys (4. 8. 9) all they ever want is Lego's, if the father is willing and able he could sit with the boys and help them build it too, which will give Mom a break and still be interactive with the child. usually star wars is the most popular lego sets but there are many to choose from... depending on your budget you might try to get tickets to a mavericks game, I'm sure they have accommodations for those who are n a wheel chair, it could be a fun night out for the family during BB season. (or to any sporting event)

My boys are 5 and 9 this Jan. I'm not sure how much you are looking to spend, but do they have a basketball goal in their driveway? Also, agree with other posts that there is a wide range of Lego's that would probably work well. Nerf makes an over the door basketball net that glows in the dark, my boys love the nerf guns that come with velcro vests and protection glasses! Also, I think it's Dicks (maybe it was Sports Authority) that carries a glow in the dark basketball, my older son has it and thought it was really cool! Happy holidays!
