my daughter has been congested and nasily since last tuesday. We took her to the doctor monday and he said it was just a cold and just give tylenol and ibuforen every four to six hours, and it will go away on its own. so monday we said ok, then we wen to bed and the next morning she was not feeling well, so i kept her home from daycare. Then wendsday she wasn't any better, so i took her to the doctor and said it was rsv and he said give her lots of fluids rest and he prscribed her with breathing treatments and sent us home. she has been doing treatments for 5 days seems better, i've been off with her since tuesday, she is better but she is still coughing and a little naisly and i'm going back to work tomorrow do you think she is still contagious or what should i do.

What can I do next?

My son had rsv several years ago. He was so bad he had to be hospitalized before he go better. He was there for a week and they did lots of updraft treatments and put him in a tint over his be that contained a humidifiier. When we left the hopital he had no cough or fever. if your child is still showing signs of being sick I would keep them home, it could come back and even be worse than it was.

My son had RSV when he was 6 weeks old and was in the hospital for 2 weeks and then came home on oxygen for about a month. It is a serious virus. Just to warn you she may have problems in the future from the RSV - my son's lungs are basically "scarred" from the RSV - the dr says he will outgrow it but for now he has to take a nebulizer treatment everyday to help keep his lungs in good shape and he takes Singular tablets and whenever he gets a cold he has to take extra nebulizer treatments to keep the wheezing down. So basically what I am trying to say is in the future when she gets a simple cold it may not be so simple she may start wheezing etc. and need further treatment so just be on the lookout for that - so then you may need to see a specialist in asthma and allergies to prescribe meds to keep the wheezing under control. Just wanted to warn you that RSV leaves its mark and may cause you problems in the future so just be aware so you can keep her as healthy as possible!! Also, its going to take awhile for that cough to go away completely.

If she is still coughing, she is still contagious. It is highly contagious - like a cold & is spread by sneezing and/or coughing. But check with your Ped. to be sure.

You can use saline drops and a "booger sucker" bulb syringe to help clear her nose. And a humidifier at night in her room. If she isn't "wheezy" sounding in her chest she is probably doing better. When my daughter had RSV 2 months ago you could feel and hear the wheezing.

I would suggest you return to the doctor and get his opinion. RSV is nothing to fool around with and many babies end up in the hospital with it. I was surprised when they let you take her home and treat her.

Another thing to consider is what was the length of the medication/treatment.
Take care!

Three of my grandchildren had RSV within the first several months of being born. Every one of them were hospitalized while they were sick. RSV can turn deadly within hours. It is not "just a cold". My best friends grandchild (at 5 weeks) went to the Doctor 3 days in a row telling them the baby was sick. The Doctor just treated it like a cold and after the mom nursed the baby the next morning the baby died while being burped.

With so many Doctors not treating children with medicines it is scary to me. I know kids are getting too much medicine and diseases are mutating into new illnesses but sometimes they really need drugs besides spraying their nasal cavities with saline and then using a syringe to suction it out.

Take that baby back to the Doctor and have her tested for RSV and see if it is gone, if not then stay at home another few days. Your child care provider may not be able to give the undivided attention you can give your child.

RSV is contagious for around 2 weeks. Two of my kids got it one year. The 15 month old had fever for 9 days. I understand that it is difficult to be off work for so long, but if you take her back to daycare too early, she will infect many other children. These children can then take it home to their siblings and other babies. RSV is not something to mess with. Please make sure she is completely better before she goes back to daycare. I am not one that is bothered by other peoples snotty children, but RSV is different and should be taken very seriously. RSV is a virus and antibiotics won't help unless they develop a secondary infection. If it is serious enough, they will need breathing treatments.

My nephew who is 6months has rsv also. He has meds and the breathing treatment. His doctor said as long as there was no fever he was fine to go to daycare. Check that out, otherwise you may miss alot of work, the poor babies just look so sick.

We had the same problem with my son when he was 9 months old. We caught it very early and also went home with a nebulizer and two different breathing treatments, pulmacort (to build it up long term) and albuterol to help with the breathing quick. We used TONS of saline and kept the fluids down him constantly, Gatorade and Pedialyte. He had a cold to start with and wasn't eating well Fri, then it seemed to go away, but after being in the nursery on Sunday morning, by Sun night he was wheezing.
