Hey guys, my sister and her husband who live in North Carolina have finally decided to adopt after years and years of trying everything under the sun to get pregnant, but to no avail. They are now ages 41 and 39 and they would like to adopt an infant. They are having a hard time getting started cause it's just all so confusing. They are thinking of maybe even adopting from the Ukraine. Anyone have ideas, thoughts, names, agencies, web sites, support groups.... Anything that could help????

What can I do next?

I used to be an adoption caseworker and the best advice I can give is make sure they use an agency that is licensed by the state. Unfortunatly there are scams out there and like everything else if it sounds too good to be true it probably is. A licensed agency will make sure that birthparents rights are properly terminated so there won't be any problem with them returning. As some others have mentioned Gladney is an excellent choice. I would recommend they visit several agencies before making a decision. Any reputable agency will host information meetings for couples who are just getting started. Steven Curtis Chapman (Christian singer) has adopted 3 girls and has a lot of information on his website, especially about adoption from China. Hope this helps!

Hi S....My husband and I are in the adoption process but have done this through the foster to adopt program. We did get an infant and now he is 16 months old. This is a higher risk way to go but I would recommend it for various reasons if their state has the same options. Otherwise, if you google Michael W Smith he has a lot of information on adoption and they can get some good direction from his website

HI, there-

The Gladney Center for Adoption in Fort Worth is a wonderful agency and resource, with a very active international adoption program. They can be reached either on line or at 1-800-GLADNEY. Good luck to your sister and her husband. Our family celebrates the miracle of adoption everyday with our two sons.

Gladney House in Fort Worth is also one of the more respected agencies for adoption. You might try working with them as they will also be able to direct your sister's efforts to a international adoption. We were beginning the adoption process when I got pregnant through IVF.

Our friends just adopted a newborn through http://www.adoptionangels.com/ It is based in San Antonio, which is just a coincidence. They are actually from Michigan. They actually got to be at the hospital when the baby was born. I think they went through a program through their church (Catholic) that had them listed with several different agencies and this one just happened to be the first that had a child available.

Hi S., how exciting! My aunt and uncle decided at 45 and 47 they'd adopt. So we have the prettiest blonde hair, blue eyed little boy, and so smart! He was 10 months when he came home. He's almost 4, he is from Siberia in Russia. My cousins adopted a little girl from Kazakstan(sp?) a few years ago and she's cute too. The sad thing about adopting in the US is that the mother can come back and claim her child, and it takes longer to get the child. I'm not sure what the agency was called, if you PM me, I'll ask my aunt tonight. At one point they were worried about the population decrease, so they stopped adoption and even took back some of the kids that were adopted, so sad. I'll check on it if you like.
