Hello out there! My 12 year old daughter was recently diagnosed with ADHD and I was hoping someone, or everyone, could offer up some advice how to provide the best support to my daughter. Thanks!

What can I do next?

The biggest thing you can do is read up on the foods that set it off. Sometimes just changing the died can keep the drugs away. Do not let the teachers keep her out of recess more than once a week. She will get in trouble because she cant sit still. But she needs the excercise to help her work through her add. Finally get her into a good karate class. Do not expect miracles inthe karate class but if you keep with it, it will help her to focus better. As a treat I also got my daugher brain kids its a DS game that helps train the brain.

One of the best things you can do to support her is take good care of yourself. We moms of AD(H)D kids need to make sure we get enough downtime and sleep to deal with the more irritating parts of our kids behaviour with patience and grace. So remember to breathe, take that nap or bath and let the laundry go a bit longer. Both of you will benefit.

I was diagnosed with ADHD when I was around your daughters age. I am now a young woman mother and adult who has gotten used to who I am and what living life is like having ADHD... Coping with Adhd is harder than others may tend to see believe or think. and i personally have been able to find peace throughout treatment with medication and a psychiatrist. Someone who was able to understand me and guide me throughout the unexpected twists and turns one goes through.. before after and beyond a diagnosis. Be patient with your daughter.. if medication is an option discuss them with her doctor. without my medication i dont think i would have reached such successes.. Ive accepted the fact that adhd is something i can not rid and i chose to finally work with it and not against it..

There's a post on this same topic just a few spots above yours that has a lot of great responses. I would take a look there. Martha R's information is particularly insightful.

Just tried to copy and paste my post from there, but it doesn't work on Mamapedia ...

Have her channel her energy into something productive. Helps a lot with
self esteem. Maybe volunteering in your community, working on a farm if
she likes animals, or with local ambulance ( even just helping clean out and wash the ambulances she is helping).
