I have a 6 yr old boy with ADHA, for the most part he does just fine in school. We did put him on meds for school but he only takes it for school we don't give it to him on weekends or during summer. He does have to have more reminders then most kids and directions have to be broken down into smaller steps. But other than that kids with ADHD/ADD are normal little kids.

I would suggest finding a behavioral psychologist in your area. Our pediatrican gave us some suggestions for good psychologist. They will just help give you ideas on how to modify his behavoir and your parenting to down play the ADD.

I have a girlfriend who's little boy (7) has ADD. I know that he is currently on meds in the patch form. Every morning they put the patch on him and he seems to be doing very well with that kinda of med. I know she has a hard time getting himself ready in the mornings because he is easily distracted. They were having problems with him at school-talking, not doing his work, etc. They came up with a reward system rewarding him for being on green at school for the entire week. Hopefully this helps somewhat. Good luck and try to be patient.

What i can suggest is to give him small tasks not large one he will get overwhelmed otherwise. This advise im giving you is the best way. I have had add since i was 7 or 8 years old i would not suggest meds right away but if meds are the way to go then DON'T have him put on ritalin. If you need more help you can call me or email me on the side. My email is ____@____.com and phone number is ###-###-#### please don't hesitate to call me. My son too was diagnosed with ADD. So I know first hand it can be a little scary. He is also 7 years old. He was having problems in school and at home. So I had him tested and sure enough I was right. Well the fist thing that I did was research ADD. Then I talked with my child pediatrician and he recommended that my son be put on medication. When he told me that I was really freaked out, because I've heard horor stories about kids being put on meds for ADD and all they do is lay around like limp frogs and drool all over themselves. Well I trust my sons pediatrician, so I went ahead and agreed to the meds. My son has been on his meds since March 14th and he is like a new little boy. He is very happy with taking his meds and he loves the fact that he can focus is school and that his grades are much better. He is even proud of himself. He has alot more confidence as well. He is the same little boy that he was before he started taking his meds, he's just able to focus more now. He has the same personality and he is still very active. In my personal opinion my sons meds were the best thing for him. I hope that helps you in some way. Feel free to call or e-mail me if you have anymore questions or if you would just like to talk. My e-mail address is ____@____.com and my number is ###-###-####.
Sincerely
Desi

My son has ADD with Anxiety. He was diagnosed after Kindergarten when he was 6, and is now is in 3rd grade(so 3 years). The most important thing is to make sure that you see a DR. that knows and understands ADD. He omly takes meds on school days. It is hard, but with a lot of trial and error you and your child can learn to live a pretty normal life.
