Hi! I'm leaving in a couple of days to travel cross country with my children, and while I have lots of ideas for my older kids, I'm having trouble coming up with ways to entertain my 1y.o. Also, any tips for dealing with pressure changes in baby's ears would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!!

What can I do next?

Edible playdoe saved us. Bring saran wrap and cover the tray and then let them go at it. Bring plastic knives for them to play with themselves and then bring the other cool stuff to do with them, Good Luck

Lollipops are fabulous for ears and entertainment. Keep all kinds of little goodies. New board books, the color magic markers that only color on the color magic coloring books (as long as 13 mn old doesn't try to eat them - hee hee), lots of snacks, portable DVD player w/ Baby Einstein discs, scotch tape (give them a little piece to play w/ in fingers), more lollipops. Hope something here helps. Have fun!

Nursing during takeoff and landing or giving them a drink always helped my daughter on the plane. If your toddler uses a pacifier, the sucking motion should help pop his/her ears as well.

I bought a few inexpensive new toys for my baby so I could whip them out on the plane when she got bored. Lots of snacks help, too, and if it's around naptime, the swooshing sound of the plane does seem to lull them to sleep nicely.

Good luck and enjoy your trip!

I know this sounds bad but I pack a carry-on full of food!!! It kept them busy and when their ears started to hurt I gave them some lollipops to suck on which helps. With the baby I was still nursing so I nursed the entire flight, even during take off we were both strapped in and I leaned over to him in his car seat to nurse him.

Good luck and hope you have fun!

When I flew in Feb. there were two couples on the plane with one year olds flying with them. They had back packs with books, a music box with head phones, snacks, etc..... Also plenty to drink. They were no trouble at all you didn't even hear them except for when the little boy was tired and started to cry but with in a few minutes the Dad had the head phones on him and he was sleeping. Honestly the two older children were the ones that made noise and irritated the other passengers.....

We've had to fly several times within the last few months and was advised by my pediatrician either nurse or provide bottle for baby to drink during take off and landing, as mentioned. Also, I brought little rattles and my baby's favorite little teethers, however, to be honest they only entertained baby for a little while. As bad as this sounds for a little one so young, she was mesmerized by watching her little cousin's Fisher Price (or whatever brand) portable DVD player. As much as I don't want her watching videos at her age I did give in while on the flight due to her fussiness otherwise. Also, a couple of our flights I scheduled late in the evening during baby's bedtime so after her feeding she went right to bed in the carseat (airplane approved).

I had the same concern when traveling across country with my little one. However, to my surprise, he ended up sleeping almost the entire time! So it turned out to not be a concern after all. However, I did get lots of advice about bringing little dollar store items that could easily fit into a carry on bag, etc. Good luck..

your baby will sleep alot but for the ears. If nursing latch on during take off and landing. If not a pacifier or a sucker (sugar free)

My pediatrician gave me the advice of using a pacifier with my son when he was little to help with the pressure in his ears and it worked like a charm !! I've used it again with my daughter who is about to turn 1 and again, like a charm!! As far as activities for your 1yo, we just brought a zippered container of her favorite small toys and she was fine. Good luck on your trip!!

Only advice I can give ya for occupying is just bring a few small toys/books etc. and as for the pressure change, you want to make sure he/she is sucking on a pacifier or drinking something at the time of the change etc. babies ears will need to "pop" with the change just as ours do and "swallowing" is the perfect way for them....

good luck on your trip!

Well first of all... God bless you for being home with your children... incredible!

As for the activities on the plane... I travel a lot with my daughter and what I have found successful (if possible) is to travel around nap time... always being sure to have a drink to help her with the pressure change and of course some fun activities! When she was 1- we had a small doodle pro that I brought on board, books she could also chew on, and LOTS of snacks to keep her entertained. I also always had a bag of small toys that she loved (a moo cow, chew keys, etc.)

Best of luck!
