Acid Reflux/Sptting up a LOT!

My son has been spitting up for quite a few weeks now. The Doctor put him on Axid at first and this seemed to help for a while and then all of a sudden quit working. We switched him to prevacid and that didn't work at all! Then we tried increasing the Axid which didn't help, then we tried just Soy formula and again, it didn't help. The soy almost seemed like it made it worse :( We've also tried gentlease formula and formula with added rice. He spits up to the point that at times it comes out of his nose and he is being changed 3, 4 sometimes 5 times a day because he just soaks his outfits. He sometimes even spits up an hour after he eats. We just started him on Reglan plus Axid and so far nothing has changed, but it's only been a couple days. I'm just wondering if there is anyone out there with this problem or anyone who had this problem and what did you do??
My son is 10 weeks and I'm beginning to get cabin fever, because I just can't take him out, not knowing if he is going to start screaming from being in pain or if I'm going to be changing him constantly. I am going back to work as a nanny Dec. 1st and I am bringing him along and I'm praying every day that he is better by then.
Any advice would be great!!

What can I do next?

Hi JB,

My daughter, who is now 6, spit up all the time too. Some days we'd go through 2 or 3 outfits. We ended up putting a bib on her for the whole day and usually changed it 4 or 5 times. We also dirtied up a lot of burp cloths. She also cried a lot - very colicky.

She was never diagnosed with acid reflux. It did get better as she learned to sit up and walk. It's something she just grew out of.

It's not easy at all, I know. Bringing extra outfits and tons of bibs and rags everywhere isn't fun. I hope for you that your son just grows out of it too. :)

Best of luck!

M.

You may be overfeeding. Also some babies need burping twice, keep patting and don't do much sudden movement after feedings and make sure they're in an upright position for a while after feeding to allow milk to go all the way down and through. My nephew was treated for acreflx to with the same symptoms. And this is what we found out. Try all this as well as making sure that overfeeding isn't one of them

Hi! My son has acid reflux and he has been on the formula, Nutramagen by Enfamil since he has been about 5 weeks old. He is now 4 1/2 months old. The formula is for colic and babies who may be allergic to cows milk. It is extremely easy to digest. Unfortunately, it is a fortune of money. However, we buy it on-line at www.bulkforcheap.com . It is much cheaper on this website than any retail store.

He was first on Zantac and it didn't help at all. He would cry constantly and we had no idea what to do. It was a nightmare for the first 2 months. I was afraid to go in public b/c he would cry all the time. I know your pain.

Finally, he was put on Pravacid and we went to a Pediatric Gastro doctor. After a few weeks, we finally saw some results. My son started to smile and the crying became less and less. We now hardly have any crying and if he is crying, it is because he is tired or hungry.

I do feel the Pravacid is a miracle drug for babies that have severe acid reflux, but at the same time I feel the older your baby gets the better it gets too. Their tiny tummy's needs to grow still.

I recommend seeing a Pediatric gastro doctor. They will do a simple and painless exam. We went to Dr. Suzanne Nelson. She is located in the Glen (Glenview). We were recommend by our pediatrician, but she is great. It is always nice to get another opinion besides your pediatrician regarding reflux.

My son is still on Pravacid and probably will be on it for a few more months. I have heard that around 6-7 months reflux uses goes away, since babies start to sit up by then.

Good luck and it does get better!

Congratulations on the baby!!
Reading your post just took me down memory lane with my first born. I remembers switching formulas (from alimentum to soy to a different soy to another), changing my diet, pumping and throwing away breast milk to avoid allergens, the feeding bib, spit up bib and back up spit up bib, bottle feeding breast milk to measure the amount, sleeping with the baby upright on my shoulder, crying, not sleeping and also going out to dinner with my huband for 10 minutes because that is all we had until the baby woke up and screamed!!!
Two things worked for us. Whether is was together or what I don't know, but at least one of them worked. First we put him on Nestle Good Start in the orange can. It had just come out and out Ped told us he had just read it had better proteins, etc. He had not used it with any family yet. This was the last formula we put him on and it worked......and the rest of the year he did fine. He was a happy baby.
Second the doc did put him on Reglan and I think it was Zantac. He was on it for 6wks until he was 4 mos. and then we stopped and he was fine. He no longer needed the meds (we were relieved).
I now have my third who is 4 mos and it is amazing how much she DOES NOT spit up compared to my first (we thought his was normal).
Do you go for walks, car rides? You have to get out. Babies cry, that is what they do. Just ignore people and take care of you!! Good Luck!

First of all congrats on your baby boy :) Poor thing...acid reflux sucks...I suffer from it, and can only imagine how hard it is on a little baby (and you being mamma). Both my kids were terrible spitter uppers, as was I according to my mother, but were never diagnosed as having acid reflux...our ped. just told us that it should improve as they were able to sit up and keep their stomach contents down. Soy always made my kids really pukey...took projectile vomiting to a whole new level. I found that lactose free formula helped them tremendously, and time. I am new to the reflux thing myself, and quite honestly I was really surprised, because I never, ever get heartburn, except for when I was pregnant. Anyhow, that being said, they were only able to diagnose it becaus eI was scoped for some other gi issues this past August, and they found I had severe esophagitis. Sorry for rambling, I guess my point is that I am always surprised that Doctors diagnose this so frequently in babies when they are not scoped...did they scope your son to find this out? Also, Prevacid, Axid, etc. are very strong drugs, and they do have side effects, one of which is nausea, and or diarrhea, headaches, you can read about them if you haven't already on www.drugs.com. I personally take protonix, and tend to feel a bit queasy in the morning, better after I eat, and had tons of headaches the first two months on it, getting better this month. Maybe there are side effects bothering your son...? Also, from what I have been reading so far, most kids outgrow this. Eating For Acid Reflux, by Jill Sklar and Annabel Cohen has a whole section dedicated to info. on the elderly, and children with reflux. I hope this helps, and I hope your son feels well soon.

My "spitter" is 6 months old. She uses Enfamil AR formula and takes Zantac. The AR formula is pre thickened with rice starch. It has helped quite a bit, but the addition of the Zantac has helped even more. We still deal with her spitting up quite a bit, but it's better than it was. I know the frustration of not wanting to take your child out in public, but trust when I say that it will get better. Good luck.

Have you seen a SPECIALIST???? I know your situation all to well!!! My 2mo old daughter has reflux. I had been bringing it to my ped attention now for last proberbly 5 wks we just now seen a Gastrointesinal(sp?) specialist on dec 5. He definitly knows what he is talking about and they try to solve it without meds first. with lifestyle changes everything elevated, enfamil ar, or rice added. I have my daughter on gentlease with rice cereal. I know not in the bottle well this is for medical reasons not me being lazy! The dr told me to do this... she still spits up, every once in a while not as bad. We still get our clear spit up when i change her diaper before her next feeding this is just acid, that is what the dr said. Our next step is Axid because the Zantac the ped prescribed just caused lots and lots of crying..... I have read online that probiotics (found in nestle goodstart and yogurt) help to with the acid. I am going to suggest this to my dr b4 he puts her on the axid.
As far as the growing out of it i have noticed a difference when it first started it was painful for her. She would scream for hours in the middle of the night, to the point it was frenzy style...She doesnt cry like that anymore and sometimes when she gurgles acid up or regurgitates she does whine, fussy alot not like it was anymore also if you notice they are having pain and aggitated a bit from eating.... you can give 2 cc of cherry supreme(doesnt have alluminuim in it) myalanta w/ ea feeding but will cause dihrea(sp) if too much each child is different. this helps alot!!! the dr did tell me about this gripe water is no good compared to the myalanta... www.colicsolved.com helped me out a bit...
good luck and he will eventually grow out of it

has ur little man had his vaccines? I was told by the dr that getting their vaccines aggervates it, did you notice??
